We're diving into Daniel 2, continuing our sermon series Courage Over Compromise. Two or three years have passed since Daniel and his companions were taken into the courts of Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon. The opening of this chapter tells us something crucial: "In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams. His spirit was troubled and his sleep left him."
Notice this pattern: the leadership of Babylon, who rejected God and pursued their own way, ended up in a troubled and distressed state. This is not coincidence. When we walk away from the Lord in pride and arrogance—when we say, "I know what's best for my life"—the fruit of those actions is separation from God. Whoever walks away from Him gets the very thing they asked for.
Nebuchadnezzar wasn't just one troubled man. He represented an entire empire built on the ideology that there is no God except the gods they had made, and that anyone who refused to follow would be killed. Yet at the very core, at the very center of this godless empire, the leader himself was distressed. Something was wrong, and he knew it.
In his distress, Nebuchadnezzar summoned his magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and astrologers. He told them: "I had a dream, and my spirit is troubled to know the dream." But then he added an impossible condition—he refused to tell them the dream. He demanded they tell him what he had dreamed.
The astrologers protested: "There is not a man on earth who can meet the king's demand." And then they made a devastating admission: "No one can show it to the king except the gods whose dwelling is not with flesh."
Notice the language here. When the text refers to God the Father—Elohim—it uses a capital G. But whenever the Babylonians speak of their gods, it's always a small g. And here, these false priests were essentially confessing that their own gods had no power. They couldn't interpret a dream if they weren't first told what it was.
Nebuchadnezzar's rage at this failure was so great that he ordered the execution of all the wise men of Babylon—which included Daniel and his three companions.
But Daniel responded with prudence and discretion. He approached Arioch, the captain of the king's guard, and asked why the decree was so urgent. When Arioch explained the situation, Daniel made a bold request: "Give me time. Let me stand before the king, and I will show him the interpretation."
Then Daniel did something beautiful and essential. He went to his house and gathered his three companions—Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. And he told them: "Seek mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that we might not be destroyed."
Let me ask you this: When you face a problem—small, medium, large, or extra-large—where do you go? Who do you run to? Who are your twos, threes, and fours that you can trust with your life? People you can say to: "I have a problem. Would you pray with me? Would you stand with me and seek God with me, because I don't know the answer, but our heavenly Father does"?
Through their prayer and seeking, the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision that night. And when it happened, Daniel blessed the God of heaven: "Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. He changes times and seasons. He removes kings and sets up kings."
Listen to this carefully: "He removes kings and sets up kings." The Lord has the whole world in His hands. Every single person with any power on this earth has that power from God alone. Every president, prime minister, government official, local or national—all power comes from the Lord. And every person who holds that power will stand before God at the end of their days and give an account for their life.
When Daniel finally stood before Nebuchadnezzar, he made something absolutely clear. He said: "No wise man, enchanters, magicians, or astrologers can show to the king the mystery that the king has asked."
But then came the pivot: "But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries."
Daniel never compromised. He used his influence to bring the message of God's kingdom into the very heart of Babylon. He turned to the king and essentially said: "You're right that your little-g gods have no idea what's going on. You've been putting your faith in the wrong god. Let me introduce you to my capital-G God who knows everything."
Daniel then interpreted Nebuchadnezzar's dream. The king had seen a great statue: a head of gold, chest and arms of silver, belly and thighs of bronze, legs of iron, and feet partly iron and partly clay. Then a rock—cut out without hands—smashed the statue to pieces.
What Nebuchadnezzar saw was a prophecy spanning centuries. The head of gold was Babylon. The silver chest was the Persian Empire. The bronze belly was Greece. The iron legs were Rome. But then came a rock that would never be destroyed—a kingdom that will not be destroyed. The kingdom of God, bringing judgment to every earthly empire.
We don't serve a God who is disassociated from what's happening in our culture right now. He is speaking into it today.
Imagine if our Prime Minister woke up this morning from a troubled sleep, his inner core shaken by a dream he couldn't understand. The question becomes: Who will interpret that dream for him? Who will bring God's perspective into the centers of power?
This is where we come in. We are a spiritual family, a community of disciples, and kingdom ambassadors representing God into every area of our lives. We are sent ones, carriers of the kingdom of God. The goal is not just to turn up on Sunday morning and say, "That was great." The goal is to leave here and recognize: You are a missionary. You've been sent. God has brought you to this city, this nation, and your mission is to bring the kingdom of God into every area of your life.
Who knows who you'll stand before tomorrow? Who knows who will come to you with a problem and say, "I don't know what to do"? Will you rely on your own ability and skill? Or will you turn to your heavenly Father and say, "Lord, I'm seeking you because I need your wisdom to help this person"?
What happened after Daniel's interpretation? Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face and paid homage to Daniel. More importantly, the king declared: "Truly your God is God of gods and Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries."
Nebuchadnezzar confessed that Jesus is Lord. He confessed that the little-g gods were powerless. And as a result, the king gave Daniel high honors, many gifts, and made him ruler of the whole province of Babylon and chief prefect over all the wise men.
Courage over compromise gives you influence. If we stand for the truth, we will be given more influence. Regardless of what the world does with what we have to say, that's not our concern. But we as God's people are called to be people of courage and stand for what is true.
First: He's got the whole world in His hands. What news headline are we waiting for to be tipped off that truth? I know there are times when I've been hit with a wave of fear, confusion, or anxiety, and I cry out, "God, I cannot see you in this situation." But the truth is: regardless of whether I can see Him, it doesn't matter. It's the truth that sets me free. No matter what we see going on right now, the Lord has the world in His hands.
Second: Stop cursing the darkness and speak life into it. Through the power of our tongue, we have a choice. When problems come to us, we can either try to solve them in our own minds, or we can call upon the kingdom of God to bring transformation. The enemy would love nothing more than for us to agree with his lies and let them become true over this nation. It takes discernment and self-control to realize that the amount of oppression and fear of the future is rising. It is our responsibility to speak life when it is easy to call out the darkness.
Third: Even barbaric dictators cannot hide from God. And neither can we. If the Lord wants to speak to us, He will. All power we see on earth comes from God. The Lord is speaking to His people across the world, and it is our joy and heavenly responsibility to be ready to speak into any chaos, any confusion, to interpret people's dreams, to interpret the seasons and days we're living in, and to bring God's wisdom and perspective into everything.
I have a neighbor—and I know we all do. The Lord has given me this neighbor to pray for. I've had opportunities to have conversations with her, and twice I've been able to pray for her. My purpose is simply to let her know that there is a heavenly Father who loves her so much that she has a purpose over her life.
The future? None of us can control it. But the Lord has the whole world in His hands. Where it might feel scary or confusing, where chaos seems loudest, know this: the kingdom of God is not only advancing—it's going to advance through you.
Daniel was handpicked and placed in Babylon's court by God. And God was able to speak to Nebuchadnezzar through Daniel. He wants to do the same through you.
