Understanding Storms in Our World

Before we dive into our passage, let me ask you something: have you ever been caught in a storm that hits suddenly, without warning? I'm South African, and where I grew up in Durban and later Johannesburg, storms could arrive at any moment. I'm talking about storms so intense that the street lights go off because it's become pitch dark at 9 in the morning.

I remember one day driving down the motorway—this was before mobile phones—when a storm hit me completely by surprise. Rain was pouring down like sheets of water on my windscreen. Then the hail came: golf ball-sized hailstones hammering my car. I found the nearest bridge and parked there, huddled with complete strangers. We didn't know each other, but in that moment, we were all afraid.

Life is like that sometimes. Storms hit us suddenly, and we become overwhelmed by fear. Looking at the storms people shared today—relationship breakdowns, sleepless nights, financial stress, death of a loved one, too many deadlines, uncertainty about the future, sickness—these are the real storms we face. And today, we're going to look at a passage in Mark chapter 4 where Jesus encounters his disciples in a storm, and we're going to learn what that teaches us about Jesus and about faith.

Jesus Directs, Jesus Delivers

Let's look at the beginning of this passage. Jesus said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side." Notice that Jesus was the one who instructed them to go there. They were on the Sea of Galilee, traveling between two very high, long mountains—a place where storms kick off regularly and quickly.

Here's what strikes me: Jesus knows everything. He would have known that a storm could happen. He knew the route they would take. Yet he still said, "Go over to the other side." Not "go to the bottom of the lake." The other side. When Jesus directs, Jesus delivers.

I love that Jesus is a man of his word. When he says something, he will deliver on it. We see this theme throughout Scripture:

Joshua 21:45 — "Not one of all the Lord's good promises to Israel failed. Every one was fulfilled."

Joshua 23:14 — "You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled."

1 Kings 8:56 — "Praise be to the Lord. Not one word has failed of all the good promises he gave."

Numbers 23:19 — "God is not human that he should lie. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?"

2 Corinthians 1:20 — "For no matter how many promises God has made, they are in Christ."

Hebrews 10:23 — "Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess. For he who promised is faithful."

Hebrews 6:17-18 — "It is impossible for God to lie."

When you read these verses together, you understand that God is a God who keeps his promises. Because Jesus said, "Let's go to the other side," and because he cannot lie, that's exactly where they went.

The Real Lesson: Obedience and Growth

But here's the thing: something happened on the way to the other side. The storm kicked off. Now, I think this passage is about more than just the miraculous act of Jesus calming the storm. I believe it's about Jesus revealing something to the disciples about their own faith and growth.

Obedience is the gateway to growth.

The disciples were obedient to the voice of Jesus, and that obedience opened a doorway for them to grow. Yes, there was a storm, but it was also an opportunity for growth. So often we want to see the miraculous. We want to see the breakthrough. But we forget the lesson he's trying to teach us.

Isaiah 48:17 — "This is what the Lord says, your redeemer, the holy one of Israel. I am the Lord your God who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go."

Jesus directed them through the storm. What if we could see the storms in our lives not as disasters to escape, but as lessons to learn? What if they could help us become more like Christ? What if discipleship growth mattered more than the miraculous breakthrough we're waiting for?

Think about Peter. Peter was in that boat during this event. Later, Peter would walk on water. I wonder if, in that moment when Peter saw Jesus calm the storm—when he realized that Jesus has authority over creation itself—his faith was awakened to believe that one day, water could become solid enough for him to walk on. I wonder if in that moment Peter learned that the presence of a storm does not mean the absence of Jesus.

Jesus Has the Final Say

When the storm hit, the disciples panicked. They woke Jesus and said, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" But Jesus stood up and simply said, "Peace. Be still."

Jesus is not just a teacher. He is the final word. Whatever storm you're facing right now—

Are you struggling in school, feeling like you don't understand, like you're the silly one? That's not the truth. Jesus has the final word.

Are you dealing with sickness? Are you thinking, "This is it, this is the end"? No. Jesus is the final word.

Are you walking through uncertainty about your future, not knowing how you'll pay for things? Are you afraid your children won't care for you? These feel like storms. But because Jesus is in your boat, his word is the final authority.

"Peace, Be Still": Understanding Jesus' Power

That phrase "Peace, be still" in Greek uses the word "phimotheti." This word literally means muzzled—like putting your hand over someone's mouth so tightly they can't speak.

Interestingly, Jesus used this same word in Mark chapter 1 when he was quietening an evil spirit. He said, "Phimotheti"—be muzzled.

That's what Jesus does in our storms. He throws a muzzle on the thing that's trying to overwhelm us. He muzzles the voice of fear. He muzzles the voice of doubt. He muzzles the voice of despair. When he says "Peace, be still," he's silencing everything that tries to convince you he's not with you. So that all you hear—all you hear—is the word of God.

Living With Jesus in the Boat

Let me be honest with you: the storms will come. Are we going to face financial crises? Yes. Will people die around us? Sadly, yes—that's part of the journey of life. Will we hit situations at work where the boss doesn't like us? Absolutely. Will we face bullies? Will we face loss and pain and confusion? Yes to all of it.

But here's what you need to know: Jesus is with you. The presence of a storm does not mean the absence of Jesus. He will stand up and say, "Peace, be still." He will throw a muzzle on the thing that's trying to take you out. He will throw a muzzle on the storm that's trying to wash you over.

Maybe you're walking through a season of storm right now. Maybe you've just received a diagnosis that's not good. Maybe anxiety has suddenly hit you and you don't know why. Maybe your parents are arguing a lot. Maybe you don't know what the future holds. Maybe you don't know how you're going to pay for things. Maybe you're worried about whether your children will take care of you.

What I know is this: the humans around us—I cannot control their actions. But what I do know is we can lean on the word of God. The presence of a storm is not the absence of Jesus.

A Prayer for the Storm

If you're in the middle of a storm right now and you need Jesus—if you need him to muzzle the voice of the storm so you only hear his voice—I want to pray for you.

Jesus, I pray that you would quieten the voice of the storm. I pray that your people would only hear your voice. Peace. Be still.

Father, I pray the truth of your word and your promise: you will always be with us. Help us know that. When the storm speaks negativity and lack of faith, muzzle that right now. Let them hear you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
