Your legacy is not what you build—it's what continues when you're gone. This is the overarching theme as we conclude our "Foundations of Leadership" series by examining how Moses finished his life and the legacy he left behind.
Throughout this series, we've explored Moses' journey: his identity ("Who am I?"), his posture as a leader, and his position of influence. Now we examine the final question: "Who comes after me?" Identity is about who you are. Legacy is about what you reproduce.
Consider the account in Exodus 17:10-13. Israel battles the Amalekites while Moses stands on a hill holding up his staff. As long as his hands are raised, Israel wins. When his hands drop from exhaustion, they lose.
But Moses doesn't stand alone. Aaron and Hur come alongside him, each holding up one of his arms until sunset. They are what we might call "pit masters"—those who help carry the weight.
You will never sustain what God called you to carry alone. What God does through you will eventually require others around you.
Consider the redwood forest. These trees grow over 300 feet tall, yet their roots only extend 6-12 feet deep. How do they stand? Their roots intertwine beneath the surface with other redwood trees, literally holding each other up. When storms come, they withstand the winds because they're connected.
Great leaders don't stand because they're strong. They stand because they're connected.
Many leaders want to be needed more than they want to be effective. They carry everything, control everything, do everything. But legacy is not built on being impressive—it's built on being supported and sustainable.
If your leadership doesn't make room for others, your legacy will die with you.
Your greatest legacy won't be how high you climbed or what you achieved. It will be how many you rooted and connected with. Don't try to do it alone. Share the responsibility and invest in others.
In Exodus 33, Moses tells God: "If your presence doesn't go with us, don't send us." This is a transformed Moses—no longer making excuses, but determined to follow God's presence above all else.
What changed? Maturity. Moses would meet with God daily in the tent of meeting, speaking with Him face-to-face as a friend (Exodus 33:11). But notice something critical: while Moses would leave the tent, Joshua remained behind.
The more that you're in God's presence, the more you trust Him because you know Him.
Moses encountered God, but Joshua remained with God. Joshua didn't settle for an encounter—he positioned himself to remain in God's presence. This is the difference.
Legacy is not what you experience; it's what you model. People don't remember what you taught—they replicate what you practice. You can say one thing and live differently, but what people will catch is how you live, not what you say.
Moses modeled his relationship with God, and Joshua watched and remained. That's the power of proximity.
In Exodus 24:12-13, God tells Moses to come up on the mountain to receive the stone tablets. Significantly, Moses takes Joshua with him—not all the way to the summit, but part of the way.
Moses could have said, "Stay here. I'll handle this." Instead, he brought Joshua into proximity. This is powerful.
You don't build legacy by protecting your position. You build it by preparing your replacement.
Don't feel threatened by the next generation's talent. Invest in it. The principle is simple: give, and you shall receive. If you pour out to God, you can never out-give Him.
We teach publicly but we don't disciple personally. There are many teachers but few disciplers. Moses gave Joshua access—not just sermons, but moments. Think about how many moments we miss because we're so focused on achieving, building, and accomplishing.
Don't waste the moments God is trusting you with. Long after you're gone, God's timeline continues. He has a future planned, and He's trusting you to steward what He's given you so it can be passed on. We're only here today because generation after generation of believers passed on the legacy of faith in Jesus Christ to us.
In Numbers 27, God tells Moses he can see the promised land but won't enter it. Instead of pouting, Moses asks God to appoint a successor. He doesn't leave it to chance—he's intentional.
God tells him: "Take Joshua son of Nun, who has the spirit in him, and lay your hands on him" (Numbers 27:18).
Notice: God says Joshua has the spirit in him, not on him. This likely happened when Joshua stayed behind in the tent of meeting, remaining in God's presence while Moses left. God selected him because of his faithfulness.
Moses lays his hands on Joshua. This is the transfer moment—not accidental, not assumed, but very intentional. He didn't just start well or lead well; he finished well by transferring legacy to the next generation who would take Israel into the promised land.
A great life is not just how you start; it's how you finish.
Moses prayed for the promised land, fought for it, led toward it—but Joshua steps into it, not Moses. That's the test of your heart: to invest in others so they can accomplish something you may never experience.
Consider a relay race in the Olympics. The fastest runner can lose the race if they fail the handoff. Nobody celebrates a runner who refuses to let go of the baton. Yet many leaders do exactly this—they won't release responsibility, won't mentor, won't trust the next generation.
Success is running your race. Legacy is handing off the baton.
If you're still carrying everything God gave you 20 years ago, you're not protecting the mission—you're slowing it down.
Here's something remarkable: God told Moses he wouldn't see the promised land. Yet in Matthew 17, on the Mount of Transfiguration, Moses appears with Elijah in the presence of Jesus, in the promised land. The promised land represents a place God the Father is preparing for each of us—a place in His presence.
After Moses dies, God speaks to Joshua: "Moses my servant is dead. Therefore, the time has come for you to lead these people, the Israelites, across the Jordan River into the land I am giving them."
God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous. Where did Joshua learn this? Watching Moses. Even when Moses was confused about his identity, even when he had excuses, even when he doubted—he still followed God and led Israel to the threshold so Joshua could lead them in.
Success asks, "How far can I go?" But legacy asks, "Who am I bringing with me?"
Week one, Moses asks, "Who am I?" By week four, he answers with his life. Moses was a deliverer, a leader, a friend of God. But more than that, he was a builder of people.
Many believers become buckets—we receive wisdom, blessing, and opportunity, but it stays with us. Legacy people become pipes. They pass on what God has given them.
God never intended you to be the destination of blessing. He intended you to be the distribution center.
Are you a bucket or a pipe? Some are so focused on what God is doing through you that you've forgotten what He wants to do beyond you.
If you've felt like Joshua—faithful in the background, wondering when your time will come—hear this: You're not waiting; you're being witnessed. Heaven is watching. Joshua didn't just step into leadership; he was formed in proximity to leadership.
Stay in the presence of God. Stay faithful. Every unseen moment, every obedient yes, every time you stayed when it was hard—heaven is paying attention. God is writing a legacy through your consistency.
For some of you, you're about to step into spaces you didn't build, carry responsibilities you didn't start, walk through doors you didn't open. When it happens, do not shrink back. Don't question it. Don't say, "Am I ready?" Run after it.
God is raising up leaders who don't need credit. He's raising up voices that don't need validation. He's raising up people who care more about legacy than spotlight.
You are not behind. You are not overlooked. God sees you. He's prepared you, maybe in your wilderness experience. He's been forming you. Because there's a legacy that He needs you to deposit and leave behind for the next generation.
You are being prepared for something that will outlive you.
