Good morning. I want to start by sharing something I learned recently while serving as a lead counselor at a youth camp. I heard testimonies from young people dealing with anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and abuse. What struck me was that these challenges weren't tied to adult responsibilities like mortgages or bills—yet they were still wrestling with real pain.
When asked what I learned from the experience, I realized something profound: this generation needs strong marriages and healthy families. The struggles our young people face often trace back to the homes they're growing up in. That's why I want to encourage every married person and parent here—your family needs you. Your commitment matters.
Today we're continuing our series through the Gospel of Mark. I love Mark because it's action-packed and straightforward—Jesus as a powerful servant, calling people to respond. During Jesus's ministry, things were going well. He was healing people, sharing parables, giving people hope. But then, just like life sometimes, a storm hit.
Let's look at Mark 4:35-41:
"As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, 'Let's cross to the other side of the lake.' So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind. But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. Jesus was sleeping in the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him, shouting, 'Teacher, don't you care that we're going to drown?' Then Jesus woke up. He rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Silence! Be still.' Suddenly the wind stopped and there was a great calm. Then he asked them, 'Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?' The disciples were absolutely terrified. 'Who is this man?' they asked each other. 'Even the wind and the waves obey him.'"
I can relate to facing storms. I prayed for a specific career goal from the age of eight. By 23 or 24, I had achieved my childhood dream—playing in the NFL. After eight years, including two Super Bowls, my career ended earlier than I'd hoped.
I remember asking God, "Why? You gave me eight years, but couldn't you give me ten?" My mentor—the man who led me to the Lord—challenged me with a different question: "Instead of asking why, ask God what He's trying to teach you through this storm."
That changed everything. I realized God was preparing me for a different purpose. He showed me that because I had played that game and could go anywhere and talk about Him, I could now give people hope, peace, and show them they are loved unconditionally.
Here's the truth: So often we get caught up in the storm that we can't see the purpose of the storm. The disciples had just witnessed Jesus healing people and giving hope, yet when the storm came, they completely forgot who He was. They forgot what He could do.
How many of us do the same thing? In marriage, we start out saying "I love you" all the time, holding hands, admiring every detail about our spouse. But over time, that fades. The only reason the honeymoon phase dies is because of the effort and energy we stop putting in.
When you find God's purpose in the storm, it changes your mindset from gloom and doom to hope in the future.
Don't let the familiar make you forget who Jesus is, what He does, what He's done, and what He can do.
We're so prone to forget. The disciples had just seen Jesus do amazing things, yet they forgot immediately. How often do we do the same?
Familiarity says: "I've heard this before."
Faith says: "God, show me something I've never seen before."
Familiarity says: "I'm not getting fed. The teaching isn't deep enough."
Faith says: "How am I feeding myself? What does the Lord want to show me beyond what I heard?"
We are not babies. We're adults. The Word is alive and active. After church, go home and ask God to show you something deeper. Maybe there's someone you need to pray for. Maybe the Lord wants to use you to give somebody hope. There's so much more to do than sit in familiarity.
Think about what Jesus has saved you from. He's saved you from drama, accepted you when nobody else would, loved you unconditionally when your own family didn't. That's worth celebrating every single time you come to church—not because the sermon is perfect, but because Jesus is.
We need faithful people to be representatives of His gospel. If there was ever a time, it's now. What you receive here may not just be for you—give it to someone else, because everyone knows somebody going through a storm.
In the storm, the disciples focused on the water instead of the Savior.
I remember teaching my kids to swim. I'd stand in the pool and tell them to jump to me. When I was close, they jumped confidently. But as I moved further away, they'd look at the water instead of looking at me. They'd start worrying: "What if I drown?" But I never let them drown—they just didn't keep their eyes on me.
The enemy can't lessen God's power. All he can do is distract you from the power.
Fear grows when you focus on the storm, but faith grows when you focus on Jesus. What does Scripture say about faith?
"Now faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen. It gives us assurance about things we cannot see."
When you fix your focus on Jesus, you don't necessarily see the storm anymore, and it's much easier to find the value and purpose in it.
Many of you are wondering why you keep going in circles. It's because you're focused on the storm, not on Jesus. You're not learning the lesson. Jesus is saying: "I know I'll put you on the ledge and move way back, but if you just focus on me, you know that I've got you. I'm not going to let anything happen to you."
When Jesus woke up, He rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Silence! Be still." Suddenly the wind stopped and there was a great calm.
When Jesus shows you who He is, live like you believe Him. Don't just say it—live it.
I'm talking about Daniel 3:18 faith—the faith of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego when they were about to be thrown into the furnace. They said, "We will not bow. But even if You don't deliver me, even if You don't bring me out of the storm, I'm still going to praise You. I'm still going to serve You. I'm still going to obey You."
That's the faith we need. That's the faith this generation needs. That's the faith the world needs. That's the faith your family needs.
Here's something hard to hear: The number one reason people don't come to church is because of us. Not because of the gospel, but because of how we live.
Does that mean you have to be perfect? No. But if you say you believe in an amazing God who created the heavens and the earth, then your life should look different. Your marriage should look different. Your kids should look different. Your parenting should look different. Everything about you should look different.
If it's not, you can't blame the church. You can't blame the pastor. You can only look in the mirror.
When someone shows you who they are, believe them. When Jesus shows you who He is—through His power, His love, His faithfulness—believe Him and live accordingly.
James 2:19 says:
"You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you. Even the demons believe this and they tremble in terror."
Even demons believe. The difference is, when you follow Jesus by faith, your faith should look completely different from the world. It's impossible to please God without faith. Your life should be visibly different.
Jesus took 12 ordinary men and prepared them for something great. God's purpose is always bigger than the storm. He wanted to leave them—and us—with this lesson: Don't get distracted by the storm. Find the purpose in the storm.
The disciples were being prepared for persecution and hardship ahead. They needed their faith at another level. But they couldn't see it while they were in the storm. We're the same way.
As you're going through these storms, ask yourself:
The answer is surrender to Jesus Christ. It doesn't mean you have to change your life first—it means you give Him your life, and He will make the necessary changes.
If you're here today and you need to surrender your life to Jesus, I want to invite you to pray:
"Dear Jesus, please forgive me, for I know that I'm a sinner and my sin is wrong. Lord Jesus, come into my life and make me who You want me to be. Take me where You need me to be—emotionally, spiritually, physically, and psychologically. Help me to not get distracted by the storms of life, but to focus on the purpose of those storms."
If you prayed that prayer, I want to ask you to stand. Don't worry about who's to your right or left—focus on your relationship with Jesus. As our worship team comes, come forward to the altar. Let's pray together.
