This morning, we're looking at one of Jesus's most remarkable miracles: the feeding of the five thousand. Before we dive in, let's consider how transformation happens in God's kingdom.
In 2017, a film called The Founder was released about Ray Kroc and the origins of McDonald's. Today, McDonald's operates almost 37,000 restaurants across 120 countries. To serve that vast number of people requires a massive workforce. As theologian Tom Wright points out, if a business is to succeed, you need more people to come on board—and it's the same with God's kingdom.
At the beginning of Luke 9, Jesus gives power to the twelve disciples to take on his ministry—driving out demons, curing diseases, and proclaiming the kingdom of God. But here's what's striking: Jesus didn't hire a large team and set up branches everywhere. Instead, he invested most of his time in just twelve leaders.
He knew that only eleven of those twelve would truly carry forward the kingdom. He invited many people to follow him, but only twelve were his disciples—his pupils. A disciple wasn't just someone who saw a teacher five days a week; a disciple followed their teacher around all the time, learning and imitating their way of life.
Jesus called these twelve to be apostles—ambassadors. They were learning from him so they could go out and demonstrate this way of life to the world.
Pete Scazzero, founder of Emotionally Healthy Discipleship, says that Jesus was not focused on numbers. He found success by transforming the lives of a small number of people who would then change the lives of many more. The kingdom isn't built on one leader adding one person at a time, but on a leader empowering other leaders to each draw in more people themselves.
We see this multiplication play out: Jesus had a few followers, then twelve, then seventy, multiplying outward and onward.
In this chapter, the twelve begin to taste what their lives would be like after Jesus ascends—when they would carry on his ministry themselves. At the beginning of chapter nine, Jesus sends them out with no possessions and no food, calling them to trust in God.
Now they have just returned from their mission trip and withdrawn with Jesus for a debrief. But there's a crowd of thousands who have discovered where Jesus is. The disciples might have expected a quiet time, but instead Jesus welcomes the interruption, speaks to them about the kingdom of God, and performs miracles.
You would think, having watched all these miracles, the disciples' expectancy would be sky high. But they were not expecting what came next.
Jesus took five loaves and two fish. He thanked God the Father for them. Then he broke them into enough pieces to feed over five thousand people—not just feed them, but fully satisfy their hunger and fill them completely.
If we're honest, looking at those resources, we might think they could possibly feed five families. But enough to feed five thousand? That defies logic.
As we reflect on this story, we'll examine three areas: praying for miracles, the work of the Kingdom, and the power of God.
In this passage, Jesus heals the sick and provides for one of our most basic human needs: hunger. We live in the West in a wealthy country; most of us have never felt true hunger.
Our knee-jerk reaction might be to pray for more miracles. And I'm not saying that's wrong. To answer the question directly: I believe the feeding of the five thousand literally happened. Jesus took a small amount of food and multiplied it to feed many people. This miracle—and the others we read about—really happened. We worship a God who can intervene supernaturally in our world, a God who loves us.
But we must never view God as a vending machine. If we insert one prayer, we get the miracle we desire. If that were how it worked, the world would be shaped to our will, not to God's will.
Pete Gregg's Unanswered Prayer course explores what happens when we pray for a miracle and don't get the answer we want. The reality is that this world is complicated. If God continuously performed miracles, he would be breaking the rules he established, and the world would be chaotic.
The solution isn't to avoid asking for miracles. Instead, spend time pressing into God's presence. The more we get to know him and learn to hear his voice—through silent reflection, through his word, through our brothers and sisters—the more we'll pray in line with his will.
What is his will? To do good to us and to work the best for us, even out of really challenging situations. If we trust that, we can balance asking for miracles while also trusting him when we don't get the answer we expect.
Miracles can and do happen. If we ask for healing or God's miraculous provision, God can answer that prayer. But if we never ask for miracles, we won't see any. As John Wesley says, "God does nothing but in answer to prayer." Don't let the fact that miracles don't always happen discourage you from asking for them.
This chapter is laced with references to the kingdom of God—referring to Heaven and Earth being united, God's presence fully dwelling among his people.
Jesus was fully man and fully God, the firstborn of this Kingdom, uniting humanity with God. He offered his life so we would receive his Holy Spirit and carry God's presence with us wherever we go.
We are part of God's kingdom now by having God's presence live within us. But in the future, this hope will be fully realized as his presence permeates the whole Earth.
Notice the progression in this chapter: At the beginning, the disciples are told to take no provisions, including no bread. Then comes the miraculous feeding of five thousand. God reminds us that ultimately, it is he who provides us with bread, with all that we need for life. After all, he creates all things and all the natural resources we use for food.
We're not called to imitate the disciples and carry no possessions. But this passage reminds us where our focus should be: not on material things, but on the kingdom of God.
Later in Luke 12, Jesus charges his followers not to worry about food and drink. These things sustain physical life, but our connection with God sustains eternal life. Jesus calls us to value the kingdom above all other things.
We receive eternal life only through Jesus. In John 6, Jesus refers to himself as the bread of life. John includes this discourse right after the account of the feeding of the five thousand—clearly connecting the two. Jesus is the bread who comes from Heaven, the bread that sustains life eternally. His sacrifice on the cross frees us from being enslaved to sin, which leads to death. We become part of the new creation.
This is why we take bread and wine at Communion—to remember Jesus's death, his body broken and his blood spilled. When we eat the bread and drink the wine, we remember that we became one with Christ in his death so that we will be one with Christ in his resurrection. We reaffirm our connection to God through his Holy Spirit.
All of this became possible through the death of God's Son. This was the high price necessary to bring us into communion with God—our membership fee into the kingdom.
So we return to the foundational question: Do we believe that God made five loaves of bread and two fish into enough to feed over five thousand people, with twelve baskets of broken pieces left over?
Do we believe that in that moment, God was creating more bread and more fish as the disciples handed it out? It defies our rational, evidence-based culture. Yet I think our faith depends on believing in a God with the power to perform a miracle like this.
We place our hope in Jesus, who died on the cross in a mortal body but was raised to life again in a new body. Paul goes into detail about this in 1 Corinthians 15. Christ is the first to go through this process. If we believe in him—the one who overcame death—we can be raised in imperishable bodies as well.
Here's something striking: It actually takes less faith to believe God can create enough bread and fish to feed a multitude than to believe he can recreate new bodies for us. Think about how complex the human body is. We believe in an Almighty God who controls the entire universe. If we believe that he defeated sin and death on the cross, then we can believe he can create new bodies for us, free from the power of sin and death.
Perhaps you've been praying for something miraculous—the healing of someone you know, or praying for someone to come to God. You may be feeling discouraged that you've seen no change, that God hasn't intervened as you hoped.
You need to be reminded today that God does indeed have the power to perform miracles, and he welcomes us to ask for them. As Ephesians 3:20 says, he is able to do immeasurably more than we can ask or even imagine.
Yet we must trust that with his infinite wisdom and unfailing love for us, he is plotting the best possible course for us—even when we don't get the answers we expect.
Or perhaps you need reminding that we are already part of God's Kingdom. Your future salvation is assured. Your eternal place in God's presence is protected. There is nothing you need to do to earn your eternal life—it has already been given to you through faith in the bread of life.
Even if we don't see the healing we hope for on Earth, we have a place in the Kingdom where we will be completely healed and restored.
God has the power to bring a new life, and that life starts right now.
