A person without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls. But why walls? This ancient proverb speaks to something fundamental about protection and value.
The original audience understood walls immediately. Cities depended on them for survival. No walls meant no protection—no gates, no watchmen to see danger approaching. Walls weren't simply another feature; they were what protected everything else in the city. A city without walls meant exposure, not freedom.
We might not build physical walls around modern cities like Orlando, but we still build walls. Brick and mortar have been replaced by technology and security systems. We install deadbolts on our doors, smoke detectors, ring cameras, face IDs, and passwords—some of you have passwords for your passwords. Why? Because we realize that some things are too valuable to leave unprotected.
While the form of walls has changed, the function remains the same. We build walls around what we value. The real question isn't whether we believe in walls—it's: What do we believe is worth protecting? If you're wise enough to protect your house, your kids, your bank account, your identity, and your phone, then surely you understand why Solomon asks: What about protecting your heart?
Proverbs 4 says: > "My son, be attentive to my words. Incline your ears to my saying. Let them not escape from your sight, but keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them and healing to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flows the spring of life."
The protective language is clear: Guard your heart. And Proverbs 25:28 tells us how—through self-control.
We've spent much of our lives thinking about self-control as a restriction. But what if God, in His love for us, designed self-control as protection for us? What if God created boundaries not to make life smaller, but to protect something bigger—you and your heart?
Here's what the proverb reveals: Walls can be breached before they are completely broken. Walls don't collapse overnight. They are breached and destroyed one decision at a time.
I know this firsthand. Three weeks ago, I downloaded Candy Crush. Before you judge, check your phone—you probably have three or four games on it. It started innocently. Just a game. Just wasting time in line, killing a few minutes. And it was fine until something changed. At some point, my heart was broken into, and my time, my money, and my relationships were exposed to this unhealthy habit.
I could have been more generous with my time. I could have blessed someone with the money I spent. I could have spent time with my family. Candy Crush was my story, and I own it. But what about you? What has taken your time? What has affected your relationships? The walls of self-control you thought you had couldn't hold.
Without self-control, the heart is slowly exposed. That's why God says: Keep your heart. Guard your heart with all vigilance. Everything flows from the heart—your words, your decisions, your relationships, your behavior. Our hearts reveal what we value most. Jesus Himself said: > "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Where is your heart? Has it been breached? Is it exposed?
If you feel shame right now, don't. Paul, who wrote 13 New Testament books, felt what we feel and said it out loud: > "For I do not understand my own actions, for I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate."
Have you ever felt this way? I decide one way, but then I act another. You say, "I'm done. I'm never doing this again. I'm going to pray more, eat better." Only to find yourself doing the exact same thing you said you wouldn't do, and not doing the thing you said you would.
Welcome to humanity. Better yet, welcome to the moment when you stop trusting yourself and realize that you need a Savior.
This proverb isn't describing someone who simply lacks discipline. It's describing someone whose heart has become vulnerable. And here's the mistake we make: we confuse vulnerability with inability. We think, I just need more discipline. I need more willpower. I can overcome this if I try harder.
But if that's what the proverb meant, then we've missed its transformational power. This proverb isn't saying try harder. It's not saying invest more willpower. It's exposing our weakness and our need. An exposed heart needs protection that it cannot provide for itself.
The question becomes: Who can protect an exposed heart?
The answer is Jesus. Listen to His words in John 15: > "Yes, I am the vine. You are the branches. Those who remain in me and I in them will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing."
Did you hear Jesus say, "Try harder"? Did He say, "Build stronger walls"? No. He said, "Remain in me. Stay connected to me. Abide in me." God doesn't begin by demanding more from us. He begins by giving Himself to us.
Think about the picture Jesus paints. A branch doesn't wake up determined to produce more fruit. A branch simply stays connected to the vine. When you look at the leaves on a tree, understand: those leaves didn't produce themselves. They didn't try harder. They came about by being connected to the tree.
When you stay connected, fruit naturally flows. That's the gospel. Your self-control cannot sustain itself. Willpower lasts only so long. But godly self-control is produced—not forced, not determined—by staying connected to Jesus. The power of self-control is not found in restriction. It is found in relationship.
Galatians 5 tells us: > "The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control."
Self-control isn't manufactured by determination. It is cultivated through connection. And fruit is evidence that something alive is happening on the inside.
I've never seen fast fruit. Fruit takes time because it has to be formed. Could it be that what you're experiencing right now is just a formation process? Don't give up yet. Continue waking up and praying. Continue submitting that habit. Continue asking God to help you. Continue connecting with community. Over time, you will see self-control produced in your own life.
Here's the order that matters: Let the Holy Spirit guide your lives, and then you won't do what your sinful nature craves. When we allow the Holy Spirit to guide our lives, He begins to change what we desire. That's transformation.
When we understand how Jesus produces self-control in us through His Holy Spirit, then Proverbs 25:28 comes alive with the very breath of the gospel. This proverb reveals our need for Jesus.
Without Jesus, your heart remains exposed. Without Him, your desires become vulnerable. Without Him, you're left trying to protect yourself from internal chaos that leads to external destruction. But Jesus says, "Remain in me. Stay with me. I am the vine. You are the branches. Apart from me, you can do nothing—including controlling yourself."
Self-control is not the evidence of a strong person. It's the evidence of a heart that has stayed connected to Jesus. You just need to stay connected.
If you feel shame, you don't need to feel it. There is no condemnation. Don't let the enemy whisper lies: You'll never get over this. You're too weak. You're not strong enough. Look at him and say: "You're absolutely right. I'm not, but He is, and He can do this through me."
This week, I want to challenge you to lay two bricks—proverbial bricks.
The first brick is a brick of grace. Invite Jesus into your heart city. Everyone is a heart city. Give yourself grace. All have sinned and fallen short of God's glory. No matter what you've done, no matter how many times—God loves you. He wants to restore the walls of self-control to protect you. Shame is not part of what Jesus is building. There is no condemnation.
Receiving grace and inviting Jesus is simple. Right where you are, you can pray: Jesus, I invite you to lead me as I practice self-control.
The second brick is inspecting your thoughts before you try to manage your behavior. Our default is behavior modification. But God wants us to start at the heart. Every breach begins somewhere—usually with a thought.
Philippians 4:8 encourages us: > "Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right and pure and lovely and admirable."
Each day, ask yourself: Is this thought moving me closer to Jesus, or is it leaving my heart exposed? Once you sit with that question, do what Jesus said: Remain in Him and let His words remain in you.
Start by spending time with Jesus every day. Wake up and pray. Open His scripture. Meditate on it. If you don't know where to start, use an app like Dwell, or text 40777 and text the word "daily"—you'll receive a scripture every day at 6:30 a.m. Take that scripture, sit down, take a few deep breaths, slow your pace to the pace of prayer, read it, and invite the Holy Spirit to work. Pay attention to your heart.
Whoever gets access to your heart gets influence over your life. Don't let anyone have more access to your heart than Jesus.
A person without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls. But one brick, in the hands of the Master Builder, becomes part of a wall that protects the heart your heavenly Father died for and loves.
