Introduction: Who Are You Truly Trusting?

We are continuing our series called Why Jesus? The title of the sermon this afternoon is Why Jesus — Because Jesus is the Ultimate Protector: the Shepherd Who Knows and Lays Down His Life for Us.

In John 10, Jesus introduces a key theme. He communicates with clarity and conviction that he is the good shepherd. In doing so, he fulfils three Old Testament prophecies that emerge in Ezekiel 34, Psalm 23 that we know well, and Isaiah 40.

Perhaps today more than ever, our lives are dictated and determined by a cacophony of voices, all vying for our attention and our affection. Some voices have credibility and care attached to them. Others hinder or harm us — they tease, trick, or tempt us away from the call of God on our lives.

Here is the reality: everything and everyone that we listen to is slowly but silently shaping us. Our decisions determine our destiny. If we fail to build the correct framework for our lives, we will be led astray by the lies and lures of this dying and destitute world.

That forces a sobering, serious question upon each of us: Who are you truly trusting with your life?

Too many Christians and non-Christians are trusting in the traps of power, platforms, money, status, and control. Worse still, some Christians take these worldly frameworks and attempt to sanitise them — wording them differently to justify a shallow and superficial spirituality.

Jesus, in John 10, says we are all called and commissioned to trust only in him. He is not just challenging us — he is confronting us. Where is your trust? For the Christian, the answer is Jesus Christ. My response is this: would the evidence of your life reflect that? It's easy to say the answer is Jesus, but if our lives and decisions do not reflect it, then there are areas of our lives that are not trusting in him.

The Context: A Blind Man Sees (John 9)

Let me build a little context by tiptoeing back into John 9, where Jesus heals a man born blind. No problem at surface level — except Jesus does this on the Sabbath, creating substantial tension and trauma for the Pharisees, the religious authority figures of the day.

Just like in today's culture, people in positions of authority were suspicious, even skeptical, of this man's healing. The Pharisees refused to believe despite overwhelming evidence and the man's testimony.

That should comfort some of us today as we share God's love with the lost. Even when you have done everything you can — when you have loved and served Jesus and been biblical in all you've said and done — there will still be people who refuse, resist, and reject the love of God.

Do not let your heart be troubled. That is their decision and not yours.

The Pharisees' response was shocking, arguably slanderous. They interrogated the man, tried to make him withdraw his testimony, interrogated his parents, debated the theology, and questioned the authority of Jesus. Instead of rejoicing that a blind man could now see, their legalism and religious rhetoric kicked in. Why? Two reasons: Jesus healed on the Sabbath, and the healing challenged their perceived authority.

The net result: they banished the man from the synagogue. Tragic, but not terminal — because those religious figures remained spiritually blind, while this man could now see. So who won? The blind man, because he got his sight and he's living in spiritual freedom. Later Jesus finds the man, reveals himself more fully, and the man worships him.

The irony cannot be lost on us. A man born physically blind now walks in freedom, while those who thought they could see spiritually remain bound because of their religious rhetoric — not recognising that Jesus is the Messiah.

We cannot dismiss the reality that all of us are spiritually blind until we encounter and experience Jesus in a personal and profound way, stripped of our religious rules and routines.

Point One: Jesus Alone Is the Good Shepherd

As we move into John 10, Jesus has not changed his theme, tone, or focus. He continues the same confrontation from John 9, elaborating a metaphor to help us understand his heart for humanity — vivid imagery of sheep and shepherd. But beneath the language lingers a deep accusation.

Very truly I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate, but climbs in by another way, is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. (John 10:1–2)

Jesus makes a clear distinction between himself and the thieves, robbers, or bandits. Those people always take advantage of the sheep for personal gain. They use them as a stepping stone to further their own agenda, ministry, or career. They neglect, exploit, and fail to serve the sheep.

Tragically, this happens in the church today. We've seen pastors and leaders fall because they failed to care for their flock. They viewed people as a commodity. When we value someone based on what they can do for us ahead of who they are in Christ, we've lost sight of the treasure God has deposited in them.

Jesus highlights two groups who attend to the sheep:

1. The robbers, thieves, and bandits — they climb in by an unauthorised route. They have no legal right to the sheep, they are unknown to the sheep, and they are guaranteed to exploit them.
2. Jesus — he enters by a known and authorised route. He knows the sheep, is respected by the sheep, and calls them by name, demonstrating his care and concern.

So the first verses boil down to one thing: Do you recognise his voice? Those who do find themselves loved, cared for, provided for, and protected. Those who don't are left exposed and vulnerable.

The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out... They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers. (John 10:3–5)

The Sheepfold Illustration

In that time, it was common for five, six, seven, or eight groups of sheep to share one pen overnight. Each shepherd had to know his own sheep. Every morning, the first shepherd would call out by name the sheep belonging to him, and they would leave the pen — then the second, the third, and so on.

Jesus is showing that this is about trust and relationship. Nobody knowingly follows someone they don't know, but you would follow a tried and trusted friend. Which brings me back to my main question: Who are you truly trusting in?

Notice the language Jesus uses: "my sheep." He has claimed you for himself. He affiliates with you deliberately and decisively.

Silencing the Competing Voices

There are many voices working hard to claim authority over us, giving false promises of satisfaction. Culture says you can define yourself, that your identity is not rooted in Jesus Christ.

• Sin promises to produce everything, but in reality takes everything. It promises to satisfy, but it lies and leaves a trail of destruction and disappointment.
• Fear tries to dictate your destiny. The need for control over every circumstance is a heart failing to acknowledge the lordship and sovereignty of Jesus. Many of us are driven by fear instead of being drawn by faith. We allow our insecurities and inferiorities to capture our hearts and minds, pushing ourselves to gain the attention of man ahead of the approval of God.
• Pride promotes that we can do it alone, that we don't need God — almost the mindset of an atheist. I have atheist friends, and I ask them, "When something good happens, who do you thank?" A Christian thanks the Lord; they say, "I would thank myself." Why live a life so self-seeking, self-approving, and self-centred?

So the raw reality produces a daunting question: Who are you actually listening to? There are podcasts, YouTube channels, your cell leader, the pastors — a whole range of information. But we need to tune our ears to hear one voice: his voice.

I believe the height of spiritual growth is being able to hear God's voice above all the others competing for your attention. That brings clarity and confidence. We cannot be led astray or misinformed when we've heard him clearly.

Then the next step is obedience. The sheep follow — they walk in obedience because they've heard. You won't obey because you understand; you understand because you obey. God requires full obedience from us each and every day.

Point Two: Jesus Is the Door to Abundant Life

Having established that he is the good shepherd, Jesus shifts the metaphor in verse 7: "I am the gate for the sheep."

Most sheep pens in that era had a single entrance and exit. It was expected that the shepherd would lie down and sleep right in front of the door, to protect the sheep from wild animals. This paints a powerful picture: Jesus is not just our protector but also our provider. He is the gate. The key to abundant life is found in him alone.

Here Jesus is both inclusive and exclusive at the same time. He states unequivocally that there is no other legitimate entrance — that's the exclusive part. But the invitation is open to absolutely everyone, with no restrictions or limitations — that's the inclusive part.

He proclaims that everyone who came before him were thieves and robbers — the false shepherds, the religious structures and systems that led people away from God. He is not rejecting Moses or the prophets; he is referring to those who came in that false way.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. (John 10:10)

Notice that nothing good comes from the thief — things are stolen, destroyed, killed. But in Jesus there is life, potential, fruitfulness, and eternal life. One tears down; one transforms.

What Abundant Life Really Means

Please understand: when God says he wants to give you life abundantly, there is not a red Ferrari waiting for you outside. Don't use worldly measurements to dictate success with God.

Abundant life is not:

• the absence of tests and trials
• limitless financial resources
• the easy life
• self-gratification until eternity

Abundant life is:

• being restored and reconciled to God
• everlasting freedom from sin and shame
• the power of guilt removed from our hearts
• regrets and rejection swapped out for purpose and acceptance
• joy flooding our hearts where there's been pain and sorrow
• eternal life at the forefront of our hearts in place of hell

Freedom, victory, and breakthroughs become our portion as children of God. Sin, like everything in this world, over-promises and under-delivers every time. All Jesus asks is that you submit and surrender your life to him — and you will enjoy his lordship and have life in all its fullness.

Point Three: Jesus Lays Down His Life

Now, in verse 11 — arguably the epicentre of the story — Jesus says:

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. (John 10:11)

When Jesus says he is good, he means more than morally good. He means he is trustworthy, true, honourable, noble, and honest.

Verse 11 is one continuous thought over two sentences. Only the good shepherd can willingly lay down his life. It was assumed and expected that the sheep would die for the shepherd — but here the shepherd dies for the sheep. Jesus is not making a mistake. He is being precise and passionate.

Again, Jesus labours the contrast between himself and others. The hired hands have no vested interest in the sheep. They abandon them at the first sign of danger. They care only about themselves — no love, no covenant relationship, no sense of responsibility.

But the true shepherd always stays. The true shepherd fights the danger, puts himself at risk, and loves and serves at all times, ultimately at the total cost. Why? Because the sheep belong to him. Such is the richness of his love.

A Deliberate, Voluntary Death

Five times in these eighteen verses come the words, "I lay my life down." That is not accidental. Jesus is not a victim; he has not been overpowered by an external force, nor tricked or trapped. It is a calculated and compelling choice.

No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. (John 10:18)

This is immaculate control. The cross of Calvary was planned and prepared beforehand — a voluntary act, done out of love and loyalty to his Father.

This is not a mediocre sacrifice. He steps into our space and becomes the substitute sacrifice for you and me. He dies so we can live. He takes on our shame, our struggles, our sin, the wrath of God, and separation from God — and in turn we receive forgiveness, our weights removed, our fears appeased, adoption into the family of God, and his peace, because he is the Prince of Peace.

The Resurrection and the Global Mission

I have power to lay it down and I have power to take it up again. (John 10:18)

Jesus directs our theology towards Easter and the resurrection. The good shepherd does not remain dead — he conquers death, hell, sin, and the grave.

I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. (John 10:16)

This verse radiates the glory of the global mission of the gospel. It is not restricted to Israel, but extends to every nation, tribe, and tongue. Here at KTLCC we get a foretaste of what heaven will look like when the bride, the church, is ready for his return.

Notice the singularity: one flock, one shepherd, one salvation. Jesus wants to restore and reconcile people from every context and culture. The invitation is available to absolutely everyone.

Conclusion: How Will You Respond?

What have we discovered in John 10? Jesus is speaking to us personally about relationship. When we know his voice and trust in him, we gain:

• Security — because the shepherd sacrifices and serves us
• Direction — because we follow his voice, with no more confusion or chaos in our thinking
• Eternal life — not temporary protection, but eternal belonging with Jesus Christ

Jesus stands before us asking: How will you respond? You have a decision to make, and in not choosing, you are choosing. We are left with three choices:

1. Continue following other voices — culture, sin, popularity, money, status, the affection of man.
2. Become your own shepherd — deciding, "I don't need Jesus, I'll work it out myself." You will falter and fail. You cannot steward your life or fulfil its potential without the input of the good shepherd. You are not meant to carry the burdens you carry — you are meant to give them to him.
3. Follow the good shepherd — who loves you, knows you, cares about you, wants to guard and guide you, and is willing to lay down his life for you.

A Final Thought

Religion says: obey and maybe you'll be accepted; perform and maybe you'll be loved. Jesus is the opposite. He says:

I will love you. I will shepherd you. I will serve you at all costs and at all times. I will cover you. I will care for you. I will never exploit you. Yes, danger may come, but I'm staying. I will be with you.

Jesus has already proven what he will do for his sheep. That should liberate us — we don't have to guess or wonder if he'll honour his word. He's already fulfilled it. You don't need to try harder to gain his love; he's already laid down his life for you.

The thieves and robbers promise everything but take everything. Jesus, the good shepherd, lays his life down so you can move into abundant life. The sheep follow not because they understand everything, but because they trust.

So my invitation to you today is: hear his voice, trust him, and follow him. Then you will experience Jesus the good shepherd. In Jesus' name. Amen.
