We live in an unprecedented age of information. From the Renaissance until 1900, human knowledge doubled approximately every 100 years. By 1945, it was doubling every 25 years. By 1980, every 12 years. After the internet arrived in 2000, doubling every 12 hours. Today, with AI, some estimates suggest our information doubles every 12 minutes.
Yet despite knowing more than ever before, we seem increasingly foolish. We witness foolishness everywhere—on our commutes, at work, in our homes, and especially when we scroll through social media. The gap between information and wisdom has never been wider.
Wisdom is desperately needed in the real struggles of life:
These are not hypothetical problems. They require the kind of wisdom that no amount of information can provide.
God understood this need so deeply that He gave us an entire book dedicated to wisdom: the book of Proverbs. Solomon wrote it for his son Rehoboam—a young man who would one day rule a kingdom. Solomon knew that without wisdom, his son would destroy everything.
Here is the entire message in one sentence: Worship is the foundation of wisdom.
You might have guessed that study is the foundation of wisdom. We have studied and accumulated vast information, yet our culture grows increasingly foolish. The problem is not a lack of knowledge—it is a lack of proper perspective.
Worship is recognizing who God is and who I am in His presence.
It is not primarily something you do. It is not singing, tithing, or attending church services. It is not even the feeling you experience. Worship is about where you place your heart, your trust, and your fear.
Consider the Garden of Eden. God created a perfect world and gave Adam and Eve freedom to enjoy it—with one boundary. They were not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
But they did. Why? Because the serpent tempted them with the promise that gaining knowledge would make them like God. They believed the lie that information equals control.
When they ate that fruit, they pushed God off the throne of their hearts and placed themselves there. And we have inherited this same impulse. We believe that if we just know enough, gather enough data, make enough plans—we can control our lives.
But knowledge is not control. You can know all about the weather and not control it. You can know all about your spouse and not control them. You can know all about your children and not control them.
You will worship something. Your choice is not whether to worship—you were made to worship. Your choice is what you will worship. You will either worship God or you will worship yourself. And if you are sitting on the throne of your own life, no amount of information will give you wisdom.
There is one emotion connected with true worship in the Bible: fear.
Not fear like you would fear a home invader or a rattlesnake. Rather, the fear of a child toward a loving father who is infinitely more powerful. You know he loves you and protects you, but he is so much bigger than you are. When he disciplines, you understand his righteousness contrasts with your imperfection.
It is the fear you might have toward a great coach or CEO—someone who holds power over your life and wants what is best for you, yet commands your respect through their authority.
It is the fear of lightning. You don't fear lightning because it will strike you next. You fear it because lightning itself is fearsome. Our God is the one who made the lightning.
The book of Proverbs opens with this core refrain:
The fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment. (Proverbs 9:10)
This is where wisdom begins. When we acknowledge that God is on the throne and we are not, everything else falls into proper perspective.
You might resist this. You want to live with confidence, not fear. But here is the truth: You do not have a choice between fearing and not fearing. You only have a choice about what you will fear.
When you do not fear the Lord, you do not become fearless. You become fearful of everything else: broken relationships, broken dreams, broken bodies, broken plans. All of these become terrifying when God is not on the throne of your life.
But when God is on the throne, when you fear Him appropriately, every other fear finds its proper place.
Solomon said:
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
Worship is not about what you do or where you go. It is about what you give your heart to. You might sing in a worship service and never actually worship. You might tithe and think you have worshiped—but these are religious acts, not worship itself.
Worship is not what you do with your hands or see with your eyes or where you go with your feet. It is what you do with your heart.
Yet there is a crucial connection: The highest form of worship is obedience.
You can feel deeply in your heart, but if it does not come out through your hands and feet—through how you actually live—it is not true worship. It is just religion.
The religious leaders of Jesus' day, the Pharisees, had this exact problem. They showed up at temple. They made sacrifices. They prayed. Almost everything they did religiously was for people to see. But in their hearts, they were far from God. Jesus confronted them directly:
You hypocrites. Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you. For he wrote, "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce." (Isaiah 29:13)
Consider this: If someone from your workplace was sitting behind you right now, listening to what you just sang about God in worship, would they say, "Yeah, that tracks"? Or would they ask, "Who are you?"
If what you say in a church service is unrecognizable from how you live at work, in your home, at the gym, or in your neighborhood—that is not worship. That is a farce.
So how do we actually recognize God for who He is and who we are in His presence? There is a simple, portable practice that will posture you to truly worship God—not just in a church building, but in your home, your car, at work, anywhere.
I developed this practice decades ago while serving a small church in San Antonio. I committed to a two-hour prayer vigil where I asked God for nothing. I only worshiped Him. I used the book of Revelation as my model, where we find biblical examples of worship language.
I have distilled it down to two sentences that you can practice anywhere:
Sentence 1: "God, you are..."
Complete this sentence by telling God who He is:
Sentence 2: "God, you have done..."
Complete this sentence by recounting what He has accomplished:
Notice what is absent: thanksgiving. While gratitude is good, pure worship focuses on God Himself, not on what you receive. The focus is entirely on Him.
Consider Revelation 4:8:
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, the one who always was, who is, and is still to come.
Respond to what you have read:
God, you are holy—not just holy, but holy in triplicate. You are set apart. You are above and beyond. You are majestic, royal, and regal. You are lovely, beautiful, powerful, and strong. There is no kingdom that can stand against you. There is no force that can undermine what you are doing. You were always—before time, before matter, before humanity. You are the prime mover, the beginning of all things. You are right now in this room in my presence. I recognize you here. And you are to come—tomorrow, at my deathbed, when I pass from flesh to eternity. You will always be.
Or from Revelation 4:11:
You are worthy, oh Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things and they exist because you created what you please.
Respond:
Lord, you are worthy. Whatever glory I can give, whatever compliment or honor, you deserve it infinitely more. You created the dandelions and daffodils, the aardvarks and zebras. You created five thousand shades of gray in flowers alone. You created the interweaving of bees and flowers, the cycle of the earth's crust and tectonic plates, from microbiology to macro astronomy. You are far beyond anything I could ever ask or imagine.
When I spent that first thirty minutes in worship at age twenty-three, something happened. My feet brought me to stand for the first fifteen minutes as I declared who God is. Then for the rest of the night, I found myself flat on my face.
When you truly see God, the appropriate posture is often on your face. Abraham fell down as though dead when he beheld God. So did Moses. So did Ezekiel. So did John the Apostle.
The awesome presence of God will floor you.
As you recognize God's supremacy and your own sinfulness, you understand the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. You see that your heart has been on the throne, and you need to place God there instead.
When God sits on the throne of your life, when you truly worship Him and obey Him, He will give you divine wisdom to lead you through the confusing passages of your life.
God wants to give you wisdom. He is eager to do so. But it begins with worship—with recognizing who He is and who you truly are in His presence.
I am asking you to take thirty minutes this week and practice what we have just done together. Use the two-sentence model: "God, you are..." and "God, you have done..." Let the book of Revelation guide your words. Stand in honor. Speak aloud. Let your body respond to what your heart experiences.
If you will do this, you will find the wisdom of the Lord. He promises to give it to you because He is faithful.
