How many of us have been praying for something in particular? Perhaps you've asked God: "Do this, and I will praise you." Many of us have such requests, and we trust that God will grant them. But I want to share something important this afternoon: your testimony is not the end—it is a door to another test.
You see, after you receive an answer to prayer, what comes? A testimony. And after that testimony, what comes next? Thanksgiving. After thanksgiving, another request. And another prayer. This cycle continues, but here's what many miss: testimony opens a door for a new test.
Think of it like taking an exam. You study, you pray, you take the test. Then comes the result—and if you pass, that's your testimony. But what comes next? Another exam. Another level. You don't stop at one success; you move forward to face new challenges. Similarly, in your spiritual life, when God grants your prayer and you have a testimony, that testimony is not meant to be the end. It is a license to move to another test, to see whether you are worthy of another testimony.
Let me show you this through Scripture. Look at 2 Samuel 3:1:
"Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker."
This was David's testimony number one. He was under great oppression from King Saul, hunted everywhere. But when God stepped in, the house of Saul grew weaker while the house of David grew stronger. What a victory! What a testimony!
But then in 2 Samuel 5:1-3, another door opened:
"Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the Lord said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel... So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the Lord: and they anointed David king over Israel."
David's second testimony—now he was not just strong over Saul's house, but king over all Israel! He was rejoicing. But listen: one victory opened another test.
In 2 Samuel 11:1-2, we see what happened next:
"And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem. And it came to pass in an evening-tide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon."
Do you see? This was the door. David had victory over the children of Ammon—another testimony coming. But as he walked in his victory, his eyes opened and he saw something that would change his life forever. He fell into sin with Bathsheba.
Why did this happen? Because David forgot something crucial: when you receive a testimony, you are entering into a new test. The test is not whether God will give you victory—He will. The test is how you will walk in that victory. Will you remain humble? Will you remain faithful? Will you remember God?
When David was running from Saul, he was too busy to fall into such temptation. But when he had leisure, when he had victory on all sides, his eyes opened to things he should never have seen. The door that his testimony opened led him into a terrible test—and he failed.
Now look at Solomon. In 2 Chronicles 1:6-7, God gave him an open check:
"The Lord said to him, Ask what I shall give thee."
What would you ask God? Money? A bigger house? A new job? Solomon did not ask for any of these things. Instead, he asked for something greater: wisdom and knowledge. And God was so pleased that He gave him not only wisdom but understanding, knowledge, and riches besides.
In 2 Chronicles 2:8-12, the Bible tells us that because Solomon asked for wisdom, the Lord gave him wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and also riches, wealth, and honour. This was his testimony. Solomon was rejoicing. His father David never had such abundance. This was extraordinary.
But then, in 2 Chronicles 7:1-3, God showed him another sign of favor:
"Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the Lord filled the house. And the priests could not enter into the house of the Lord, because the glory of the Lord had filled the Lord's house."
What a glorious testimony! The very glory of God filled the temple. Solomon was lifted higher and higher in his victories. Kings from all nations came to hear his wisdom, to receive blessing from him. One testimony led to another, and another.
But listen carefully: in 1 Kings 3:1, the trouble began:
"And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took his daughter, and brought her into the city of David."
After becoming king, Solomon thought: "Now I should take a wife worthy of my station." So he married the daughter of Pharaoh—which God had explicitly commanded against. This was his "wife of coronation"—his first step into the test that his testimonies had opened.
And it did not stop there. In 1 Kings 11:1-8, the Bible shows us the terrible consequence:
"But king Solomon loved many strange women... And his wives turned away his heart. For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods."
Solomon, who had prayed such a powerful prayer that the glory of God filled the temple—this same Solomon turned to worship other gods. He built altars for demons, for false gods. Why? Because he did not understand: your testimony is a door to another test, and if you do not walk carefully through that door, you will fall.
Listen: when you receive a victory from God, understand this—you are not entering into rest. You are entering into a new test. The victory you received is meant to lift you higher, but only if you pass the test that comes with it.
When God adds another year to your life, what is the test? Will you use that year to honor Him, or will you use it for your own desires? When God gives you success in your business, what is the test? Will you remember that it was God who gave it, or will you boast in your own strength? When God gives you favor and lifts you to a higher position, what is the test? Will you remain humble and obedient, or will you think yourself above His commandments?
David had the test of leisure and power, and he failed. Solomon had the test of prosperity and popularity, and he failed. Both of them forgot that their testimony was not an end—it was an entrance into a new test.
I want to speak plainly: how are you treating the victories God has given you? When God answers your prayer, do you praise Him? Or do you use that blessing to build the things you want to destroy?
Many of you have said, "I will not commit fornication again. I will not do this sin again. I will not do that." But then you do it again. And again. And again. You are building the very thing you said you would destroy. You said you would not sin, but you are sinning. You are making yourself a transgressor.
When you receive a testimony, that is when the real test begins. Will you walk humbly with God? Will you remember where your blessing came from? Will you guard your heart and your steps? Or will you, like David and Solomon, think that your success means you can do whatever you want?
God has been speaking to you. He has shown you victories. He has added blessings upon you. But many of you are deepening your hand into greater troubles. God is warning you, but instead of turning to Him, you are going deeper into sin, deeper into compromise, deeper into the very things that will destroy you.
Listen: the God who saved you from death wants to save you from this path. The God who delivered you from sicknesses wants to deliver you from the sickness of sin. The God who gave you favor on every side wants you to walk in the fullness of His blessing—not in the destruction of your own making.
Every act of sin you commit is doing more evil in the sight of the Lord. Every time you return to the sin you said you would not commit, you are building altars to the very things that will bring you down, just as Solomon did.
But here is hope: God is still speaking to you. The victories you have had, the testimonies you have received—they are not there to condemn you. They are there to show you that God is with you, and He is calling you to walk with Him into the next test with integrity and faithfulness.
Your testimony is a door. What will you do with it? Will you use it to honor God and move to a greater level of victory? Or will you use it as an excuse to sin, to compromise, to build the very things you know will destroy you?
Choose wisely. Walk carefully. Remember that your next testimony depends on how you walk through the test that is open before you right now.
