Studies show that less than half of people pray daily. About a quarter pray weekly or monthly, and roughly a third pray seldomly or never. For many, prayer can feel intimidating or even scary.
Author Anne Lamott shares a telling story from her childhood. At age seven, staying at a friend's house, she heard a bedtime prayer for the first time: "Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. And if I die before I wake..." She was terrified. If I die before I wake? As a seven-year-old, this wasn't comforting—it was alarming. No wonder prayer can feel daunting.
But here's the good news: Jesus's own disciples didn't fully understand prayer either. They watched him pray often, and one day they asked, "Lord, teach us to pray." His response was the Lord's Prayer—a model for how we can approach our heavenly Father.
In the Old Testament, God seemed distant and difficult to access. People had to go through priests, who performed cleansing rituals and followed strict protocols. If a priest made a mistake entering God's presence, it could cost him his life. Priests even wore bells on their robes so people waiting outside would know they were still alive.
Then Jesus changed everything. When he teaches us to pray to "our Father," something revolutionary is happening. The word Jesus used in the original language—Abba—wasn't formal or distant. It was a baby's first word. It's like saying "Dad."
You can approach your heavenly Father like a child approaches a loving parent. You don't need intermediaries or elaborate rituals. You have direct access.
In Matthew 6:11, Jesus teaches: "Give us today the food we need."
This isn't about stockpiling resources for years to come. It's about trusting God for what you need today. Your Father knows you need meaningful work, relationships, shelter, and food. He's not distant or reluctant to help—he wants to provide for you.
But here's where many of us struggle: we confuse needs with wants. We tell ourselves stories like:
We justify these desires as needs, but deep down, we're seeking security in possessions rather than in God.
There's a worship song that captures this beautifully: "No treasure of this life could ever satisfy. God, you are my everything."
When we sing those words, we're not claiming it's true right now. We're praying: Help change my heart, Lord. I don't want to seek the treasures of this world. I want to truly know that you are my everything.
That's the power of prayer—it repositions your heart toward what truly matters.
In Matthew 6:13, Jesus prays: "Don't let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one."
Temptations surround us constantly—the temptation to cheat rather than be honest, to be cruel rather than kind, to lash out rather than reach out, to give in rather than stand firm.
The key insight: don't wait until you're in the middle of temptation to pray. Pray before the battle begins. Ask God daily for the strength you know you need. Prayer doesn't just help you recover from temptation—it actually prepares you to resist it.
God is your deliverer. He can deliver you from whatever is trying to destroy you. And he wants to give you that power.
In Matthew 6:12, Jesus teaches: "Forgive us our sins as we have forgiven those who sin against us."
This is the only part of the Lord's Prayer that Jesus emphasizes afterward. He essentially says, "I'm serious about this forgiveness thing." In Matthew 6:14-15, he doubles down:
If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your father will not forgive your sins.
That sounds harsh, but here's the truth: withholding forgiveness doesn't punish the other person—it enslaves you.
Consider what Jesus has done for you:
Who are you to hold a grudge when the King of Kings and Creator of heaven and earth has forgiven you?
Forgiveness isn't about pretending bad things didn't happen or becoming best friends with people who betray you. It's about laying down the burden of anger and experiencing true healing and freedom.
Prayer isn't a checkbox task—"daily prayer, check." It's your opportunity to meet with God. And it's not about perfection or unbroken streaks. It's about coming back to your Father and building a consistent rhythm.
Here's how to start:
1. Choose a Time
When you prioritize a specific time to meet with God, you're saying, "Your will, not my will." You're telling God, "I want to know your direction for my life. Show me your way, and give me courage to follow."
2. Choose a Place
Jesus teaches in Matthew 6:6:
When you pray, go away by yourself. Shut the door behind you and pray to your father in private. Then your father who sees everything will reward you.
Find a quiet place removed from distractions. Remember: you're having an audience of one. Prayer isn't about impressing anyone or sounding a certain way. It's about withdrawing to meet with your Dad in private.
Bring your whole life before God:
When unexpected costs arise or trials appear, you can pray: Give me today what I need. I trust you're going to show me the path. Whatever that looks like, I trust your way is best.
Before you pray, remember who you're approaching. God is:
That is who has direct access to you through prayer.
God will accomplish his purposes whether you ask or not. But something special happens when you invite him to act, to intervene, to guide, and to rescue.
Prayer positions you for provision, power, and freedom. You have access to the one with all authority. So find a time, choose a quiet place, and prioritize meeting with your Father in heaven.
