Peter writes to believers with these powerful words: "So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead even though you must endure many trials for a little while." He doesn't say we might experience trials—he says we must endure many. This echoes Jesus himself: "In this world, you will have trouble, but take heart. I've overcome the world."
We live in a broken world where hard things happen to everyone. Yet because of Jesus Christ and eternity's perspective, the hard times are only "a little while."
Fire purifies gold by separating what's valuable from what's not. Raw gold contains impurities called dross. When heated to 1,900 degrees, the gold melts and impurities rise to the surface where they can be skimmed away. The refiner repeats this process over and over, each round increasing purity, until the refiner can finally see their own reflection in the molten gold.
When heat and pressure come into our lives, they reveal what's really there. Hidden impurities rise to the surface—anger, pride, fear, insecurity, lust, envy, selfishness. All the dross rises so it can be removed. God's goal throughout the entire process is that the reflection of Jesus Christ can be seen clearly in you and me.
In 605 BC, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon conquered Jerusalem and took the best young men captive, including four remarkable Jewish teenagers: Daniel, Haniah (renamed Shadrach), Mishael (renamed Meshach), and Azariah (renamed Abednego).
Even though these men were far from home in a pagan nation, they refused to allow their hearts to be taken captive. They worked hard, treated others with kindness and respect, and served with integrity. They bloomed where they were planted, and as a result, they were elevated to high positions in the kingdom.
King Nebuchadnezzar's ego extended as far as his kingdom—perhaps further. He built a 90-foot-tall gold statue and issued a decree: when the music plays, everyone must bow and worship it or be thrown into a blazing furnace.
"At the sound of the musical instruments, all the people, whatever their race or nation or language, bowed to the ground and worshiped the statue."\n\nMost Babylonians saw no problem with this. Their polytheistic culture welcomed another god. But for those who worshiped Yahweh, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—the one true living God—this was impossible.
As someone once said: "It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society."
Some Babylonian officials came to the king and informed on Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. But notice: they didn't report all the Jews who refused to bow. They specifically targeted these three because they held high positions. This wasn't about the statue—it was professional jealousy.
Many of us face this. Someone envies your promotion, your scholarship, your boyfriend, your girlfriend, your success. They may make comments behind your back, post negative things, try to sabotage you, or poison your reputation.
Jesus himself was handed over to be crucified for envy. Here's a definition worth remembering: "Envy is resenting God's goodness in other people's lives while ignoring his goodness in mine."
If you feel envy lurking in your heart, let God surgically remove it before that cancer spreads.
Where was Daniel? The text doesn't say. Perhaps he was serving elsewhere. But here's what's remarkable: these three men stood without their leader. In the first chapters of Daniel, it's clear that Daniel was their spokesperson, their brave one, their strong one. Here they stood by themselves.
We need strong friendships and godly community—that's essential. But we will never know and experience the full power of God if all our courage is wrapped up in another imperfect human being. There will be times when your best friend, parent, spouse, pastor, or mentor is nowhere to be found.
God uses those moments so we depend on him—our true strong one.
"The name of the Lord is a strong fortress. The godly run to him and are safe." (Proverbs 18:10)
If your strong one has moved away, passed away, disappointed you, or wasn't there the way you hoped—lean into God. He is always available. He never bails. He is the God of unfailing love. He is your unshakable fortress.
Nebuchadnezzar gives them one more chance: bow, or be thrown into the furnace.
"The God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, your majesty. But even if he doesn't, your majesty can be sure that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up."
They respectfully address the king—they're not being rebellious. But they had drawn a line in their heart long before arriving in Babylon that they would serve God authentically and consistently.
These three men lived with a powerful mental discipline. When facing an uncertain future, they filled in the blanks ahead of time:
If blank happens, then God.
If we're fired or fried, no matter what fills the first blank, the second blank is already filled: "If blank, then God."
What will save us? The God whom we serve. He is able. He is supreme. He is sovereign. He controls the tides. He knows every star, every grain of sand, every hair on your head. He can wade into the deepest ocean and still be only ankle deep. He alone can rescue. He alone can save.
But then comes the phrase that captures everything: "But even if he doesn't."
These words are packed with faith. They're saying: "We trust not only his power, we also trust his heart. We believe he can do this, but even if he chooses not to, we're going to trust his unfailing love."
There's a story of a father and his four-year-old son at a lake. The boy falls in while the father is walking the other direction. The father hears the splash, runs, and dives in. The murky water makes it hard to find his son. He goes down again and again. Finally, he finds the boy wrapped around the dock's pier, grabs him, and they burst through the water gasping for air.
The father asks: "What were you doing down there?"
The son replies: "Just waiting for you, Dad. Just waiting for you."
That's faith. These three men believed their Father would show up. They didn't know how or when, but they knew He always does.
Nebuchadnezzar is furious. He orders the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual—like the furnace that refines gold. The strongest soldiers in his army bind the three men and throw them in fully clothed. The flames are so hot they kill the very soldiers throwing the men into the fire.
Beth Moore teaches that God has three ways of relating us to fire:
Sometimes God delivers us FROM the fire—it doesn't touch us. We pray for healing, protection, miracles. And sometimes God grants these prayers.
Sometimes God delivers us THROUGH the fire—we endure it, and it refines our faith, burns the fake out of us, makes our faith and character genuine. This is priceless.
Sometimes God delivers us BY the fire straight into His arms—we meet Him face to face. A friend from a recovery program, recently baptized, had survived trafficking, addiction, and the loss of a daughter. In a terrible wreck, she died on impact. But in that moment, she met Jesus and her daughter in heaven. When that happens, our faith is made complete.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego likely thought it would be either the first outcome or the last—they probably never imagined they could walk through the fire alive.
As King Nebuchadnezzar watches in amazement, he sees something impossible:
"I see four men like unbound walking around in the fire. They aren't even hurt by the flames. And the fourth looks like a divine being."
Biblical scholars debate who this fourth man was. Some say an angel. But many texts suggest "the son of deity" or "the son of God"—a Christophany, the physical presence of Jesus himself in the fire with them.
Emmanuel. God with us. He was their fourth man in the fire.
If you're going through painful, intense heat right now, know this: You are not alone in this fire. He is with you.
Listen to your Father say:
"When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up. The flames will not consume you. For I am the Lord your God and I will be with you." (Isaiah 43:2-3)
Notice: "When you go, not if you go." We all walk through fires. We all face scary things. But if blank, then God.
Nothing can separate us from His unfailing love—not death, life, angels, demons, fears, or worries. He has prepared a perfect, fire-free, eternal place. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego had supreme confidence in this truth.
Nebuchadnezzar calls them out:
"Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, servants of the most high God, come out. Come here."
They step out. Not a hair singed. Clothing not scorched. They didn't even smell of smoke.
Their bodies were unhurt. Their robes were unscorched. But do you know what got burned? The ropes that held them back.
This is such a powerful picture. Sometimes God allows us to go through a fire to set us free—from bondage, habit, addiction, or the consequences of our own bad decisions. Many of us have been through a fire that forced us to finally humble ourselves and surrender. And as a result, the things that bound us were burned away, and we were finally free.
But there's more: they didn't even smell like smoke. The Amplified Bible says, "nor had even the smell of smoke clung to them."
I can roast marshmallows and smell like smoke for a month. But these three men? On the other side of the fire, even the smell of smoke had not clung to them.
Some people who go through fire become angry, bitter, always playing the victim. But others? You'd never know they went through anything. They don't smell like smoke.
I think of a friend whose husband had an affair. It was intense fire, lots of pain. The marriage wasn't restored, but God walked with her through it. Now you would never know. She doesn't smell like smoke.
I think of a buddy who made horrific decisions that created a bonfire in his life. He burned bridges and people. But God met him, walked him through it, rescued him from addictions and his past. To meet him now, you'd never know. He doesn't smell like smoke.
I think of a young friend battling an eating disorder. God walked her through that fire and burned the ropes binding her. You would never know she was ever insecure. She doesn't smell like smoke.
Only God can bring us through fire and write a brand new story with our lives.
Scott Shawn White is a Lakepointe member, singer-songwriter who has written for artists like Cody Johnson. He wrote a song with a chorus that says: "God is good on the good days, even better on the bad days."
Scott survived an abusive childhood, an unplanned pregnancy, overwhelming responsibility, and suicidal thoughts. He had a brother with Down syndrome whom he cared for most of his adult life. The stress was so intense that for a moment, he considered ending his life.
But in that moment, he realized he hadn't truly surrendered his life to Jesus. He said:
"I said, 'Hey, I'm not going to make it if I don't turn everything over to you.' I know all the statistics say that I'm either supposed to be dead or in prison or really mess up. And as I look back on it, he has always redeemed all the craziness, refined me through the fire."
The fires made Scott aware of his desperate need for Jesus. Now, 35 years of marriage and a completely different life later, he has a mountain of evidence that God never failed him.
"I'm grateful for that refinement and the fires. It made me aware of my desperate need for Jesus and it made me desperately seek him. He's redeemed all of it for me. And even when I go through stuff now, I have this mountain of evidence of 58 years of life that says he's never failed me."
Maybe ask yourself honestly:
As Peter said, it's just a little while. And during that little while, there's someone in that fire with you.
His name is Jesus.
Whether it's from the fire, through the fire, or by the fire into His arms, He will deliver you.
