We are working through a six-act biblical narrative to understand the whole Bible as one unified story: Creation, Fall, Interim Adam, Jesus (the Last Adam), the Church, and the New Creation. Last month we explored Act 1—creation. Today we examine Act 2: the fall, which we call the Christlessness of creation.
Our focus is Genesis chapters 3 through 11, which answer a crucial question: if God's creation was so good, why does the world look the way it does today? Why is there death instead of life? Conflict instead of peace? Idolatry instead of worship?
In Act 1, we learned that creation was made to be God's temple, and humanity was created in God's image to serve as God's sons, priests, and kings within that temple. We were commissioned to extend Eden's life, order, beauty, and worship throughout the whole earth until creation was filled with God's glory.
But the fall is far more than personal disobedience involving the forbidden fruit. The fall is the invasion of God's creation by rebellion. God's temple is desecrated. Humanity abandons its priestly and kingly vocation. Creation comes under the power of sin, corruption, and death. There is now conflict in the creation.
This changes everything about how we understand the gospel:
If the fall is more than personal disobedience, then the gospel is more than personal forgiveness. The gospel is actually an announcement. It announces God's work in Christ to reclaim his creation, to restore his image bearers to their priestly and kingly calling, and to establish his kingdom over all things.
Genesis 3 to 11 reveals humanity's failure to fulfill their calling. The first Adam failed in his vocation. Instead of faithfully serving God as His son, priest, and king, he rebelled and surrendered to the serpent. As a result, creation became fractured. Humanity was exiled from God's presence, and God's world filled with sin, death, division, and idolatry.
Yet the fall does not thwart God's purposes. Rather, it reveals . The problem revealed in Genesis 3 to 11 is not merely sin, death, or exile. At its deepest level, . This is why we call these chapters the revelation of creation's . The first Adam reveals the need for the last Adam.

Genesis 1 and 2 serve as the introduction to the whole biblical story. Genesis 3 introduces the conflict that drives the rest of Scripture. The rest of the Bible deals with what begins in chapter 3 and ends with the restoration God planned in Genesis 1 and 2.
Satan's intention was to ruin God's creation covenant. His strategy was simple: tempt Adam and Eve, God's wise rulers, to challenge the authority of the King himself.
This is the first appearance of what we may call the anti-word:
You will see this thread running through Scripture and in our lives today. The anti-word continues to question God's authority. Satan does not begin with open rebellion, but with distortion. He attacks God's creation project by undermining confidence in God's word.
The anti-word seeks to replace God's truth with an alternative story about reality, goodness, and human flourishing. Rather than judging the serpent, Adam submits to him. The one commissioned to rule creation becomes ruled by a creature. Had Adam fulfilled his calling, evil would have been judged at the beginning of history. Humanity would have continued cultivating God's world according to God's purposes. Instead, God's mission remained unfinished and awaits another Adam.
Genesis 3 explains not the failure of God's plan, but the beginning of God's redemptive plan. Some assume that Genesis 3 ruined God's purposes or made Jesus "Plan B." Never. Scripture teaches the opposite: the fall becomes the stage upon which God's saving purposes unfold. One of the final statements in Genesis perfectly expresses the Creator's perspective: "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good."
Adam was created to be three things:
Yet Adam became a prodigal son, a corrupt priest, and a rebel king. The remainder of Scripture unfolds the search for a faithful son, a faithful priest, and a faithful king who can succeed where Adam failed.
God's role was to be the supreme Lord, the rightful ruler over creation. But Satan steps in as anti-lord. First he brings the anti-word. Now he becomes the anti-lord. Adam was supposed to serve under God's authority as God's representative. After Adam's fall through disobedience, the serpent emerged as the anti-lord, challenging God's rule and enticing humanity to reject divine authority. He continues to do that even today.
By deceiving Adam and Eve, the serpent sought to undermine God's kingship and establish rebellion against His purposes, introducing sin, disorder, and alienation into the world.
The Presence of Sin: Sin was not present in creation before Genesis 3. Now it is present. The serpent appears as the most crafty of God's creatures. The Bible later identifies him as Satan, the deceiver of nations. Just as he tempted the first Adam, he will later tempt the last Adam. And he continues to tempt us.
The Power of Sin: Sin begins by questioning God's word. "Did God really say that?" How many times does this happen to us even today? Throughout Scripture, the conflict between God's word and the anti-word continues. Every subsequent act of rebellion grows from the same root: refusing God's interpretation of reality and embracing a rival voice instead.
Satan's strategy is never outright lie—you would identify him immediately. His strategy is distortion: half-truth, half-lie, or distorting God's truth. He challenges God's truthfulness, goodness, and intentions. His claim, "You will not surely die," effectively calls God a liar.
The lie beneath every sin is the desire for autonomy. "You will be like God." Sin spreads through deception and eventually enslaves its victims.
Genesis 4:7 warns us that sin desires to master humanity. Paul says, "All are under the power of sin. Not even one is righteous." John says the whole world lies under the control of the evil one. Genesis 6:5 shows us the tragic result: "Every inclination of the thoughts of human heart was only evil all the time."
The Penalty of Sin: The fall changes not merely human behavior, but human perception. When Adam and Eve's eyes were opened, they did not gain wisdom. Instead, they lost the ability to see reality correctly.
In Scripture, vision is not merely physical sight, but the ability to perceive reality as God sees it. After the fall, humanity no longer views creation through the Creator's eyes, but treats created things as ends in themselves. That's why people want to be rich. That's why people want to be famous. That's why people want glory for themselves, even sometimes in the Christian world. The result is idolatry: worshipping creation rather than the God for whom creation exists.
Rather than viewing creation through God, they begin viewing everything through themselves. The desire to become independent of God distorts humanity's image-bearing vocation. The consequences are guilt, shame, fear, suffering, conflict, curse, exile, and ultimately death.
As Calvin observed: "We never truly know ourselves until we first look upon the face of God."
God's Redemptive Response to Sin: Remarkably, judgment is not God's final word. If God had wanted to, He could have wiped out everything right then and there—Adam, Eve, serpent. But thankfully, judgment is not God's final word.
Within the curse comes a promise. God declares hostility between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent. The very race Satan conquered will produce the one who conquers Satan.
God turns the sinful alliance between humanity and the serpent against itself. From within humanity, God begins the process of renewal that will ultimately restore the creation project.
God says, "I will put enmity between your seed and the woman's seed." The promised seed will be wounded. Yet through that wound he will crush the serpent's head. Adam failed to judge and expel Satan in the first garden. But the second Adam will defeat Satan in another garden and begin God's new creation project.
The promise of redemption does not remove the consequences of the fall. Genesis 3 immediately shows how sin fractures every major relationship in human experience:
With God: Adam and Eve experience shame. They begin to hide. There is fear. Ultimately, they are exiled from God's presence.
Among Humanity: Adam and Eve begin to blame each other. Conflict emerges. Violence follows. In the very next chapter, murder occurs—the first killing.
With Creation: Humanity's relationship to creation is fractured. There is curse. God says, "Because of you, earth will produce thorns and thistles. You will have to sweat to earn food." Now there is suffering and death.
With Self: Humanity suffers guilt and shame. Self-worship emerges. Identity crisis appears—the crisis we see happening today. People don't know who they are. They want to be what they are not supposed to be. They deny what God has made them to be. That can only be healed in Christ.
With Satan: A new dynamic emerges—deception, bondage, and spiritual warfare.
While Genesis 3 explains the origin of sin, Genesis 4 to 11 explains its expansion. These chapters function as the opening lens through which the rest of Scripture is understood.
Sin Spreads Relationally: In Genesis 3, Adam sins against his heavenly Father. In the same chapter, the effect of sin damages his relationship with Eve—they begin blaming each other. In Genesis 4, Cain murders Abel. In Genesis 6, human corruption fills the whole society. In Genesis 9, Ham dishonors his father Noah. Relationships continue to deteriorate, which has not stopped even today.
Sin Spreads Regionally: There is a pattern in Genesis 3 to 11 where people move eastward—symbolically, moving away from God's presence and blessing.
Humanity is judged by the flood. The nations are scattered at Babel. Movement away from God becomes a recurring pattern of human history.
Sin Spreads Vocationally: As human beings continue moving away from God, they cannot stop building—because that is what they were created for. But now what they build are families, cities, cultures, civilizations, kingdoms, governments, and religions—all without God.
Nimrod becomes a mighty ruler, establishing the first great kingdom of rebellion against God. His chief city was called Babylon or Babel in the land of Shinar, which later becomes a symbol of human pride, self-rule, and opposition to God's authority. Cultures develop, but the culture unfolds largely apart from submission to God. Humanity continues the creation mandate while rejecting the Creator.
The Flood and God's Mercy: Human wickedness reaches extraordinary levels. Violence fills the earth. The flood becomes a form of decreation as the ordered world returns temporarily to watery chaos. Yet we find God's mercy. God preserves Noah, whose name means comfort, symbolizing that God has not abandoned His promise.
Even in a world overwhelmed by corruption, God preserves the line through which redemption will come. Noah stands within the line of the promised seed. The flood reveals not just God's judgment, but also God's justice, mercy, and covenant faithfulness. God remains committed to both His creation and its renewal.
The battle is introduced in Genesis 3:15 when God said, "I will put enmity between these two seeds." Genesis 3:15 introduces two humanities that run through the biblical story—and we even see them today. They will continue to run until Christ returns.
According to Augustine of Hippo, these can be described as two cities: the City of God and the City of Man. Ultimately, these represent two kinds of love: love for self and love of God.
The Seed of the Serpent—The City of Man: The city of humanity is represented by Cain, which leads to Babel, and then eventually Babylon—the great city that will be destroyed in the book of Revelation.
Cain becomes the founder of the city of humanity. Its foundations are self-love, self-rule, self-glory, and self-salvation. Their motto is simple: "Let us make a name for ourselves."
In Genesis 11, they say:
Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly. Come, let us build ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves. Otherwise, we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.
Notice: the "Let us" are a direct challenge to the Creator, who first said in Genesis 1:26, "Let us make man in our own image." The Lord responds: "Okay. Come, let us go down and confuse their language, so that they will not understand each other."
Babel is humanity without God. Genesis 11 presents the descendants of the first Adam at their most united and yet most rebellious stage. Created beings are now united against their own Creator. Humanity gathers not before God, but against God. Their unity is not a godly unity. We learn that "unity is strength," but not every unity is positive strength. Their unity is not a godly unity, but a rebellious one.
The lips created for praise and obedience become instruments of rebellion, self-exaltation, and resistance to the Creator. The builders seek a city, a tower, and a great name. This is humanity's self-salvation project.
Babel is Genesis 3 expanded to a global scale. Humanity continues believing the serpent's original lie: "You will be like God." Yet the center of chapter 11 is: "But the Lord comes down." The tower supposedly reaching heaven is so insignificant that God must descend to inspect it. Babel's builders imagine themselves divine. But Scripture reminds us that they are merely sons of Adam—finite creatures attempting to rival their Creator. Human pride is exposed as futile.
Babel becomes a prototype of Babylon in the Bible. Its gathering becomes scattering. Its pursuit of glory becomes shame. Its rebellion becomes judgment. Yet even here God's grace is visible, as the scattering actually restrains evil and preserves history for its redemptive purposes.
The city of Babel is more than an ancient civilization. It becomes the archetype of every human attempt to build a world without God. What begins in Genesis 11 reaches its fullest expression in Babylon later in the Bible, and finally the rebellion of the nations against Christ.
This brings us to another anti-word: the anti-church. In contrast to God's gathering work, Babel produces scattering, confusion, and self-worship. It becomes the earliest biblical picture of what might be called the anti-church—a counterfeit community organized around humanity rather than God.
We gather here not because of our human identity. We gather here because of Christ, because of what God has done. But Babel's gathering was against God and centered on humanity. That's why we call it the anti-church.
So Genesis 3 introduces the anti-word and the anti-lord. Genesis 4 to 11 introduces the anti-church. Where God's people gather, Babel scatters. Where God's people worship God, Babel worships humanity. Where God's people seek God's glory, Babel seeks its own glory.
You see this happening in cities like London today. There was a time when the tallest building in London was St. Paul's Cathedral. What is the tallest building now? The Shard—a symbol of human pride and financial gain.
The Seed of the Woman—The City of God: In contrast, the seed of the woman or the City of God is represented by Abel, Seth, Noah, Abraham, and ultimately fulfilled in Christ—the true seed of woman and the second Adam. Its citizens live according to God. It is the city whose architect and builder is God Himself—what the Bible calls a city with foundations, godly foundations.
Throughout Scripture, the fundamental conflict is over who will rule the human heart: God or His adversary. While Abel belongs to the City of God, Cain becomes the founder of the city of humanity. From this point onwards, Scripture traces the conflict between these two communities until Christ finally triumphs.
We have seen how creation has become Christless—people have been trying to fulfill God's purpose without God. Genesis 3 to 11 repeatedly demonstrates what creation actually lacks.
Creation needs:
Humanity continues building cities, cultures, kingdoms, and religions, yet everything remains profoundly disordered because creation lacks its true Adam.
These chapters reveal three great needs:
The Exile reveals a need for a true Priest: Humanity is exiled from God's presence. We need a priest who can bring us back into God's sanctuary, who can sanctify us and restore us—which is ultimately fulfilled at the cross.
The Flood reveals a need for a true King: Humanity lives under death and curse. We need a king who can renew creation—which is fulfilled in the resurrection of Jesus.
Babel reveals a need for a true Shepherd: The nations are scattered and divided. We need a shepherd who can gather God's people back—which is fulfilled at Pentecost.
Genesis 11 ends with divided humanity, scattered nations, confused language, nations without God, unfinished vocation, and the rise of the city of humanity. Yet God's promise remains true. The seed is coming.
As Cain founded the city of humanity, God now calls Abraham in Genesis 12 and begins establishing the City of God. Genesis 12 marks the beginning of God's gathering project, which we will explore next month.
The story moves from Babel's confusion to Abraham's calling, from the city of man to the city whose architect and builder is God, from rebellion and scattering to gathering, and from curse to covenant.
Act 1 showed God's purpose for creation. Act 2 shows why humanity cannot fulfill that purpose apart from Christ. Genesis 3 to 11 is not fundamentally the story of a ruined creation. It is a story of an unfinished creation waiting for Christ.
The fall reveals the Christlessness of creation. The rest of Scripture reveals God's determination to restore creation through the last Adam.
Genesis 3 to 11 reveals not only humanity's rebellion, but also humanity's need for gathering. Eden ends with exile. Babel ends with scattering. The redemptive story that follows will be a story of God's gathering project: calling a people, forming a nation, building a city, and ultimately creating a worldwide family in Christ called the Church.
What humanity divides, God will reunite.
