Many people are asking: "Pastor, are we living in the last days?" With assassination attempts, wars, economic uncertainty, earthquakes increasing in frequency, tornadoes multiplying, AI emerging, and environmental shifts—it's natural to wonder. The good news is that as Christians, we can look to God's Word for grounding truth amid all the confusion and opinions.
The study of the last times is called eschatology—a theological framework for understanding what the Bible tells us about the end times and Christ's return. Rather than swinging between two unhelpful extremes, we need a balanced biblical perspective.
Some people become so alarmed about the end times that they withdraw from the world. They think we must get off the grid, stockpile resources, build bunkers, and wait in fear. But the Bible never portrays fear and control as the Christian response to the future.

Others dismiss end-times teaching altogether, avoiding the topic because it seems too confusing. They ignore prophecy, leaving a vacuum that gets filled with conspiracy theories and fruitless arguments.
Both extremes are wrong. Eschatology taught well from Scripture doesn't lead to fear—it leads to faith and hopeful expectation. The return of Jesus is called "the blessed hope of the church." It will be a reunion, a wedding feast, a celebration. We should long for it eagerly.
When asked about the signs of the end, Jesus gave nearly 100 verses of uninterrupted instruction (Matthew 24-25). His authority on this subject is unmatched.
"Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name claiming I am the Messiah and they will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. And nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of the birth pains." (Matthew 24:4-8)
Jesus describes these events as birth pains—painful, real, but ultimately leading to something beautiful: the renewal of heaven and earth.
First: "Do not be alarmed." If studying the Bible leaves you afraid, you haven't read it correctly. Revelation is a hopeful, powerful story of how God ends injustice forever. Proper eschatology produces faith, defiant hope, and joyful expectation—not fear or confusion.
Second: "Don't be naive." Don't believe every person claiming to be a prophet or who claims to have figured out when Jesus is returning. Only the Father knows the hour—you won't figure it out, but you can be ready.
Third: "Be watchful and ready." Jesus describes a "myth of continuity"—the assumption that things will always continue as they have been. But nations rise and fall. Empires crumble. Everything humans build will one day belong to Jesus. All the kingdoms of the world have become the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ (Revelation 11:15).
In Matthew 25, Jesus paints three pictures of how His followers should live:
What should Christians be doing? Watching. Loving. Serving the poor. Working with our gifts to build God's kingdom. Living as if Jesus could return today, yet planning as if He won't come for a hundred years.
Our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there (Philippians 3:20). When Tim Keller was dying of cancer, he said: "If the resurrection of Jesus is true, everything's going to be all right." That's the hope we have. One day there will be no more cancer, divorce, abuse, sadness, or sorrow. He will make all things new.
As J.R.R. Tolkien wrote: "The birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus means that one day everything sad will come untrue."
Now we turn to 2 Timothy 3, where Paul describes the condition of human hearts in the last days. Jesus spoke about world history and timing; Paul speaks about what happens inside people. He paints a portrait of spiritual and moral decline:
"But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power." (2 Timothy 3:1-5)
The word "times" here is kairos—not chronological time but the quality of an age. What's the spiritual quality of the last days? Bad. Difficult. Stressful.
In a world that's getting darker, not better, how should Christians live? We must learn to rebel—not against God, but against conformity. Romans 12:2 calls us: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
Here are ten countercultural ways to stand out and shine as light in darkness:
We live in the age of the selfie. The camera flips to show us. We are the center of every picture, every story.
Expressive individualism says: "I feel who I want to be, I express it, and I demand your affirmation." If you disagree with my self-image, you're judgmental and intolerant. Then we ask God to bless our sense of identity.
But God says the opposite: Look up to find your identity. Find it affirmed in your community. Then look within. We've inverted the order.
As a Christian, you put Jesus in the driver's seat. It's not what I think; it's what You think, Lord. When you live this way, you stand out.
"Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." (Matthew 6:33)
Money promises security, control, pleasure, respect, and everything you need. Jesus warns: "Watch out for the deceitfulness of wealth." Money will trick you. Money will lie to you.
"Be on guard against all kinds of greed, because a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." (Luke 12:15)
One of the most powerful things you can do is give money away. Release your grip on it. Every time you give generously and joyfully, you loosen the grip of greed and toxic self-absorption.
"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have." (Hebrews 13:5)
The early church was known for radical generosity—not just to friends but to enemies. People were amazed and asked, "What is up with those people?" In a world obsessed with consumption, your generosity will make you stand out.
Boasting is thinking much about yourself and talking much about yourself. The more you think and talk about yourself, the less you think of God. You start believing you deserve the glory that belongs to Him.
There's a short distance between boasting and blasphemy. Satan (Lucifer) was a beautiful, powerful angel, but pride consumed him: "Why does God sit up there and I'm down here? I want to ascend. I want to be like God." His boasting became blasphemy. He fell from heaven under the weight of his own self-importance.
Seriousness is not a virtue—seriousness about yourself is a vice. Take God seriously; don't take yourself seriously.
When was the last time you laughed at yourself? When you do something stupid, laugh about it with friends and family. What happens? The gravity of self-importance lightens. Martin Luther said: "If you can't flee the devil by quoting Scripture, then laugh at him, because he cannot stand to be laughed at."
Here's a hard question: What's wrong with the world? Most people blame other people. But Anne Lamott wrote: "You can safely assume you've created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do."
In the early 1900s, the London Times asked: "What is wrong with the world?" G.K. Chesterton answered with two words that still echo: "I am."
That's humility. That's someone who doesn't take himself so seriously but takes God very seriously. The problem is in me. My sin. My pride. My independence. That's why I need Jesus.
Paul describes the breakdown of the family: abuse, disobedience to parents, ingratitude, unholiness, lovelessness. Why? A rejection of authority. A child learns authority from parents—that's why the only commandment in the Ten Commandments with a promise is to honor father and mother:
"Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you." (Exodus 20:12)
Why? Because at home, children learn what it means to say yes and no, to not always get what they want, to yield their will to someone else's authority. This shapes how they relate to bosses, police, and ultimately to God.
Our culture says: "My parents weren't perfect models, so I don't have to respect them." This spirals into entitlement: "My boss owes me something. The government owes me something. God owes me something."
But entitlement robs you of gratitude. If you deserve everything, you never say thank you. At Thanksgiving, if you believe you deserve the meal, you won't express gratitude to anyone.
We've made victimhood an identity and entitlement a way of thinking. But the Bible calls us to something different:
"Let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God." (2 Corinthians 7:1)
Practice holiness—separateness. Honor your parents, even if there's brokenness. Thank police officers. Honor military service members. Think about public servants. Be a person who expresses gratitude.
If the church should be known for anything, it should be forgiveness. We've been forgiven much. When people hurt you, it hurts. You rehearse the moment over and over: what they said, what they did. Then resentment becomes something you nurse. You imagine bad things happening to them, and when they do, you feel satisfied.
But Hebrews 12:15 warns: A root of bitterness can grow up and defile you and all around you. Unforgiveness makes you a prisoner.
"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32)
This isn't easy. Forgiveness can take months. Sometimes it requires praying for that person every day. Sometimes you need a friend to pray and fast with you, saying: "I don't want to be a prisoner of bitterness. I want to forgive as Christ forgave me."
When you live in forgiveness and freedom, you will stand out. People will ask, "How could you forgive that person?" That's your cue for the gospel.
We live in a culture of immediacy. You want it, you buy it. You feel it, you say it. You want something, you take it.
"Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control." (Proverbs 25:28)
Imagine someone removes your front door. How do you sleep? You feel vulnerable. Someone could come in and hurt your family, steal your possessions. That's you without self-control. You're unprotected, going with the flow, caught up in everything.
If there's a sexual desire, you act on it. If you're hungry, you eat all you want. If you want to watch one episode, you watch the entire series. Your "no" muscle has atrophied so much that you can't stop yourself.
People call this "freedom," but true freedom is knowing what's right and having the power to do it. That's the gift of self-control.
Practice self-control: Make yourself wait a week before buying something. Save up cash instead of using credit. Try fasting—skip a meal and drink only water. When your body cries, "Feed me!" you say no. Your spirit grows stronger than your flesh.
Jesus taught us to feed our spirit so it's stronger than our body, and we're not slaves to our desires.
Jesus warned: "In the last days, the love of people will grow cold." There's a loss of shame. Things celebrated today would have been unthinkable 20 or 30 years ago. The motto is "I'm going to do me," which means "I don't care what you think or what God thinks."
"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." (Galatians 5:22-23)
What is goodness? When you see it, you know it. There are people you meet and immediately recognize: That's a good man. That's a good woman. The way they live, love, serve, look people in the eyes—there's an expression of God in them so powerful and visible.
"Mark the blameless man and observe the upright; a future awaits those who seek peace." (Psalm 37:37)
In a world that's brutal and indifferent to goodness, rebel against conformity. Let God's Word transform you. Stand out.
One of the greatest lacks in our culture is the fear of God. People do things with no conviction that God is holy, that He will judge, that one day they'll stand before Him in judgment. If they "got away with it," they think they're fine.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." (Proverbs 9:10)
Do you want wisdom? Understand that God is always watching. He is holy. One day you will stand before Him in judgment. That reverence and awe should never leave you.
Some Christians say: "I'm living in rebellion to God, but I'm still saved, right?" My answer: Live in the fear of God. Your job isn't to convince me, your spouse, or anyone else that you're okay. There's only one Person you have to convince: God, who sees everything. He knows your mind, your heart, why you do what you do. The whole world is naked before Him.
"Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account." (Hebrews 4:13)
If you lack this sense of God's holiness, ask Him: "God, give me the fear and reverence of You." Then live differently. When everyone's doing their thing and you say no, they'll ask why. Tell them: "Because I want to live to honor God."
Many people use "God" as a stamp or good-luck charm. I just made an album full of profanity and darkness, but I give God the glory. Or: I go to church once a week to cover up my behavior the other six days.
God sees through all of it. Having a form of godliness while denying its power is empty religion.
The power of God's Spirit is not an idea or concept—it's a Person. God wants a relationship with you. He calls us to: Come eat with me. Talk with me. Walk with me. Be with me.
If you have a relationship with the living God, you will stand out. People will see something real, alive, and powerful in you that they can't explain.
We live in the information age. The amount of knowledge available today exceeds the sum of all human knowledge from history. But Paul warns:
"Always learning but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." (2 Timothy 3:7)
People take in information here (the mind) but it never reaches here (the heart). A recent study found that despite having more psychological insight and information than a century ago, we're less likely to apply it to our lives.
The longest 18 inches of your life is from your head to your heart. It's one thing to read a Scripture and think, "That's wise." It's another to apply it to your life.
Be the person who doesn't just read but obeys. Watch wisdom grow. People will notice and ask, "How do you have this wisdom about everything? I want what you have."
We've read the Bible. Now let the Bible read us. Scripture is a mirror.
Close your eyes and ask yourself two questions:
Write it down. Tell someone. Maybe say to a friend this week: "When I heard that list of Scripture, this gripped me. I think about forgiveness, or self-control—God has work for me to do there."
Otherwise, this is just information that bounces off. But if it sinks deeply and creates conviction, if you walk it out, you will stand out.
Paul also warns Timothy about false teachers who worm their way into homes, manipulating vulnerable, gullible people:
"Have nothing to do with such people. They are the kind who worm their way into the homes and gain control over gullible women who are loaded down with sins and who are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." (2 Timothy 3:5-7)
Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, false teachers oppose truth. But their folly will be exposed.
The church protects each other. If your elderly parent is giving their social security number to a telemarketer, you say: "Dad, that's a con. Hang up." You're protecting them from manipulation.
Parents protect children from those who would manipulate them emotionally. Similarly, as a church, we watch each other's backs. We warn about false prophets and teachers who use fear and deception to control others.
Jesus said: *"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven... And then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you.'"
