This parable is not just about a rebellious son—it's about two sons and their father. Jesus guides us through the perspective of each character, showing us the different ways we can be separated from the Father's love.
The younger son looks at the door of his father's house differently than his father does. To him, it represents a way out—a path to freedom, comfort, and endless possibility. He asks his father, "Give me my share of the estate," and his father divides his property between his sons.
The son drifts, not in one dramatic leap, but gradually. He collects his inheritance and heads to a distant country where he squanders his wealth in wild living. One thought, one fantasy, one step toward comfort at a time—we often drift this way too. We drift into busyness because it's easier than dealing with what's in our hearts. We drift into endless scrolling, travel, and keeping up with others. The distant country always seems exciting until we arrive and find it empty.
What the younger son had in the father's house:
- Purpose
- Provision
- Protection
He couldn't see it, forgot about it, or took it for granted.
The tragedy isn't that he wasted the money—it's that he left his father. Distance from the Father always promises freedom but produces emptiness.
The son ends up feeding pigs—the most degrading work imaginable in Jewish culture, since pigs were considered unclean. But he didn't wake up there overnight. He drifted there, one decision at a time. An empty stomach and a barren soul finally force him to think clearly.
"How many of my father's hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death?" he realizes. He decides to go home and ask his father to make him a servant. At least then he'd have food.
But notice: he's ready to repent, yet he's full of shame. Shame is "a sin holding account that manipulates your emotions." It lets you sing songs at church but won't let you receive love. It convinces you to come home as a servant, not a son. When shame has your heart, it always distorts your view of the Father.
Many of us live here spiritually. We believe God might forgive us, but we don't believe He'll fully restore us unless we work for it. We assume we have to sit in the back emotionally, or that we've surrendered our identity as His children. Shame has sidelined countless sons and daughters of God.
But then the story shifts. While the son is still a long way off, the father sees him. Not by accident—the father has never stopped looking. Every day, he's been watching for his son's return.
When he sees him, the father is filled with compassion—moved from his innermost parts, a whole-body ache of love. And then he runs. An older, dignified man running in public—hiking up his robes and exposing his legs—was scandalous and shameful. But he does it anyway. The father takes on humiliation so his son won't have to face it alone. He runs to get to his son before anyone else can reject him.
The son launches into his rehearsed speech: "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son." But the father doesn't even listen. He ignores the speech entirely and responds as if his son were a returning war hero.
Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate!
The robe represents how grace covers shame. The ring represents how grace restores identity—"You're mine. You always have been." The celebration shows that grace celebrates restoration.
Grace does not ignore sin—it restores what sin destroyed.
But Jesus doesn't end the story there. The older brother returns from the fields and hears music and dancing. When he learns that his younger brother has come home, he becomes angry and refuses to go inside.
His complaint is revealing: "All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours—who has squandered your property with prostitutes—comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him?"
He's right. It's not fair. But that's exactly the point: grace isn't fair.
Both sons thought the father's response should reflect what they deserved. The younger son expected punishment or at least a severe demotion. The older son expected recognition for his faithfulness. Both thought their behavior should determine their father's response. But the father's story was about something entirely different.
The father tells the older son: "You are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found."
God celebrates restored relationships first and foremost. He doesn't require you to earn your way back. He doesn't demand you go through a program or prove yourself first. He celebrates because relationship itself is the prize.
There are three doors in this story, and they represent three spiritual positions:
The door out is for those considering walking away. Maybe things aren't going well at home, or you've already left and found yourself in the distant country, hitting rock bottom.
The door to the field is for those close to God but still distant in heart. You're serving, giving, attending church—but your heart is offended. You're striving to be seen through performance, nursing resentment that others receive grace you feel you haven't earned.
The door to your heart is the invitation Revelation 3:20 offers: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in."
Your Father isn't standing with arms crossed, waiting to say, "Get out of here. You don't belong here." That's the voice of the accuser, the enemy trying to convince you home isn't an option.
Your Father is looking and waiting and watching. He cannot wait for you to come home. That's salvation. As Paul writes:
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one can boast.
Grace is a gift. Your only responsibility is to believe.
Maybe you need to come in from the field—to let go of performance-based faith and open your heart to the Father who never asked for your striving, only your trust.
Or maybe you've never opened the door of your heart to Jesus at all. Today is the day. The greatest gift waiting for you is grace, and all you have to do is believe: "Jesus, I believe. Come into my heart. I choose your story, not mine."
