Do you own or know anyone who owns a rubber duck? Probably not the kind of thing you'd talk to regularly. But what if I told you that talking to a rubber duck is actually a proven method for problem-solving?
"Rubber duck debugging" is a concept from the software engineering world. One author tells the story of a brilliant developer named Greg who, whenever he hit a coding problem, would pull out his rubber duck and talk through the issue with it. As the author explains:
"The act of explaining step by step what the code is supposed to do often causes the problem to leap off the screen and announce itself."
Odd, bizarre, strange — and yet effective. I share this because today, in the book of Numbers, we find God solving a problem in the most bizarre, strange, and odd way. But underneath the story, it's actually about God's bizarre and strange love for you.
Let's look at Numbers 21:
"Then they set out from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea to bypass the land of Edom. But the people became impatient because of the journey. The people spoke against God and Moses: 'Why have you led us up from Egypt to die in the wilderness? There's no bread or water, and we detest this wretched food.' Then the Lord sent poisonous snakes among the people, and they bit them so that many Israelites died."
Just a totally normal passage in Scripture, right? Welcome to church! Is God overreacting here? My kids complain plenty, and I've never locked them in a room with poisonous snakes yet.
But according to the text, the people weren't simply raising a concern in innocence — they were attacking the very character of God. Notice the layers of accusation: first, that God had murderous intentions, that He brought them out just to kill them Himself. Second, that He was negligent — an awful provider. Their complaint doesn't even make logical sense: "You don't give us food... and we hate the food you give us." It's contradictory and illogical. But that wasn't their goal. Their goal wasn't to make sense — it was to accuse God of not making sense. This is character assassination at its finest. This is a full frontal assault on the character of God.
How could the people respond this way, especially after God rescued them from oppression and cared for them for 40 years? In 2012, the BBC reported on a lifeguard who was fired for leaving his post to rescue a drowning person — which caused public outcry. But what's happening in Numbers is like if the rescued man himself fired the lifeguard, after being housed and cared for by him for 40 years, saying, "Life was better when I was drowning. You're fired." That's the slap in the face happening here.
Some might say it was simply the circumstances — even good people turn bad under bad conditions. And to be fair, their circumstances were difficult. The text tells us they had to bypass Edom, backtracking on a grueling 40-year journey just when the promised land was in sight. A shortcut — the King's Highway — was blocked, forcing them to go the long way around.
Could we confess that you and I aren't even our best selves when we have to make a U-turn on the freeway? When my kids forget their lunch on a chaotic school morning, my gracious, pastoral response is not usually filled with grace.
But God, in His infinite wisdom, offers a different diagnosis: not circumstance, but condition — a spiritual condition of the heart. The snakes weren't petty retaliation. God was pulling back the curtain to reveal what was really going on: long before the snakes appeared, the people had already been bitten. Spiritual venom was already coursing through their hearts.
The image of a snake would not have been new to God's people — it goes back to Genesis, to the serpent in the garden. God created a perfect world, placed Adam and Eve in it with unlimited provision and His presence. Then the serpent appeared and began assassinating God's character: "Did God actually say...?"
When Adam and Eve believed the serpent's lies and sinned, it was sin itself that bit them — poisoning their hearts, poisoning all of humanity, killing us spiritually. That's why humanity has this strange, insatiable thirst. Nothing is ever enough. Even God, we act as if, is not enough. Every generation invents new ways to chase happiness, accelerating joy through technology, and yet we're never satisfied.
Some scholars note that the bite of this particular snake caused intense, insatiable thirst. The bite in the wilderness mirrored the bite in the garden. The death in the wilderness mirrored the death that fell on humanity at the fall. We have a sin problem, and we desperately need a cure.
Maybe you think we're more "advanced" now than those ancient, primitive people. But are you fully happy? Fully content? Even with unlimited options and Amazon Prime, are we truly satisfied? The second generation in the wilderness may have thought the same — that they were more spiritually sophisticated than their parents. They weren't. And neither are we.
"The people then came to Moses and said, 'We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you. Intercede with the Lord so that he will take the snakes away from us.' And Moses interceded for the people. Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Make a snake image and mount it on a pole. When anyone who is bitten looks at it, he will recover.' So Moses made a bronze snake and mounted it on a pole. Whenever someone was bitten and he looked at the bronze snake, he recovered."
This image — a snake wrapped around a pole — is still used today as a medical symbol, one of the oldest symbols of healing. It's not strange to us now. But imagine how strange it was then. The people are dying from snakebites, and Moses tells them to look at a bronze image of the very thing killing them.
And it gets stranger still — remember, the serpent in the garden was cursed by God. Now the cure is to look at an image of the cursed thing. It must have sounded like utter foolishness. And yet, for those who looked, there was power to save, rescue, and heal.
About 1,500 years later, the Apostle Paul described the heartbeat of the Christian faith this way:
"For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is the power of God to us who are being saved." (1 Corinthians 1)
What happened on the cross? Jesus was lifted up — just as the bronze serpent was lifted up on the pole. Jesus Himself made this connection in John 3:
"Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life."
But how could Jesus compare Himself to the serpent? The serpent lied; Jesus never lied. The serpent came to kill, steal, and destroy; Jesus came to give life abundant. The connection lies in the spiritual principle laid down in the wilderness: the thing that is cursed can become the cure.
On the cross, Jesus was cursed — He absorbed all the poison of sin and death that was coursing through us. All our sins — the big ones, the small ones, the ones we regret and the ones we don't even recognize — were poured into His life. In turn, His righteousness becomes our cure. Paul says it plainly:
"God made the one Jesus who did not know sin to be sin, to be cursed for us, so that in Jesus we might become the righteousness of God." (2 Corinthians 5)
The cursed one becomes our cure. Jesus was spiritually cursed so that He might become our spiritual cure. This is the gospel — power hidden in what looks like foolishness.
For those who have trusted Jesus, this means you can have peace right now. You don't have to tiptoe around God, wondering anxiously how He feels about you today. You can rest in the fullness of His love — already poured out in full.
Sometimes when we mess up badly, we think, if people knew the kind of week I had... There's nothing wrong with healthy conviction when we sin. But we must not believe the lie that because we messed up, God feels differently about us — that we no longer deserve His love.
Here's the good news: you're right, you don't deserve His love. None of us do. That's the whole point. It's grace — He pours out what we don't deserve. And what's the ultimate proof His love is already poured out on you? Jesus on the cross. Right after Jesus makes the connection between Himself and the bronze serpent, we find the most famous verse in Scripture:
"For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)
He already gave you His Son. There is nothing left to hold back — not a single drop of His love withheld from you today.
Maybe you believe this intellectually but don't feel it, because your faith feels small and your sin feels big. Let's think it through using the story again.
Imagine someone bitten by the smallest snake in the camp, with the least venom, who looked at the bronze serpent with full confidence and great faith. Was he healed? Yes. Now imagine the unluckiest person in camp, bitten by the biggest snake, filled with venom, utterly cynical and reluctant — who looked anyway, however doubtfully. Was he healed? Just as much. They were healed exactly the same. Why? Because:
The power is not in the intensity of your faith. The power lies in the One who is intensely faithful.
Your sin could be huge — but where sin abounds, God's grace abounds all the more. He is a powerful and effective Savior. You can trust Him. Small faith, big sin — run to Him.
Maybe you're exploring faith and wondering, "Where's my contribution in all this? Doesn't feel too passive?" Let's go back to the story once more. Did Moses tell the people to suck out the venom first, or run as close as possible before looking? No. He simply said: look.
God simply invites us to believe — to trust in the beautiful Savior who was raised and lifted up on the cross. It's not our behaving that saves us; it's believing. Not 99% believing and 1% behaving — 100% believing.
If you've got nothing — 0% behavior to offer — the good news is that when Jesus was raised up, He brought 100% perfection for you. And if you trust Him right now, you already have 100% of His love in full.
You are loved with a strange, bizarre, and unusual love.
