Biblical Model and Practical Application of Christian Parenting

Good morning. Many of us still feel the impact of how our parents taught and disciplined us. Praise the Lord. Let's begin with our memory verse.
Proverbs 13:24 – "He that spares his rod hates his son, but he that loveth him chastiseth him betimes."
When you look at this scripture critically, you see that real love is not passive. If you spare the rod, you are harming your child and destroying them. Discipline is an expression of love and not an expression of hatred. We must do everything possible to protect our children and raise them in a godly way, no matter what it costs us—our time, our resources, everything. Just make sure that you discipline your children.
I remember when my mother disciplined my elder brother, who was very stubborn. She couldn't use permissive methods with him; she had to use the rod. Different children require different approaches, but the goal is always to guide them in the right way.
Don't wait until your children grow up before you start disciplining them. Once they are hardened and have formed their own decisions, it becomes much more difficult. However, if you have not followed the right path in the past, know this: it is never too late to change your parenting style. The word of God is new every morning. You can start today to reflect on and change your approach.
Your parenting style is simply your approach to raising children. Every parent uses a method, whether defined or not. The Bible has much to say about effective parenting and gives us several examples of both effective techniques and disastrous methods.
"For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has spoken to him."
God said, "I know Abraham, and I know that he will bring up his children and his household in the way of the Lord." When God blesses you with children and trusts them to your care, He expects that these children must be brought up in the way of the Lord. They will know the right thing to do at the right time. They will have the heart of God in their minds. Whatever they do, they will think about God.
"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it."
This scripture makes it clear that God has something to say about effective parenting. When you train a child in the way of the Lord, that child will not depart from it when he grows old.
"And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord."
God wants us to train our children and bring them up in the way of the Lord, but we should not provoke them to anger. When you provoke a child to anger, that child will become rebellious. However, a child who has been properly trained may come back to his senses, just as the prodigal son did. The prodigal son went away with his inheritance, squandered everything, and then came back asking for forgiveness. We do not want our children to be prodigal sons or daughters who must come back later for restoration. May God help us.
"Do not withhold correction from a child, for if you beat him with a rod, he will not die. You shall beat him with a rod and deliver his soul from hell."
You can use many disciplinary styles—some people use the naughty corner, others use different methods. The point is to find the best way to manage your child. Every child is different. Correction delivered with the goal of spiritual and emotional growth is not cruelty; it is love.
Spiritual instruction in the home is crucial for raising godly children. We see this principle throughout Proverbs.
Knowing these biblical models is not enough to make necessary changes—obeying them is crucial for becoming a godly and effective parent. It is not about reading scripture; it is about implementing it. The Bible says, "The letter killeth, but the spirit of the Lord giveth understanding." If you are humble and willing to understand, the Spirit will teach you. If you are not willing, you will not understand, no matter how much you read.
What is the best parenting style? The answer is nuanced.
While we discussed permissive, uninvolved, authoritarian, and authoritative styles last week, there is no single "best" parenting style that works in all situations. Rather, the most effective approach is a combination and blending of various styles depending on the circumstances. Sometimes you need to be more authoritarian; other times, a softer, more permissive approach is necessary. What matters is achieving the positive outcome you desire for your child.
However, there is one style that is absolutely non-negotiable: neglect is the only parenting style that is completely unacceptable. You are expected never to neglect your child's physical, emotional, or spiritual needs. Neglect can result in legal consequences and causes real harm to your child.
While not rigid, the authoritative parenting style—characterized by flexibility within structure—tends to produce the best outcomes. It combines warmth, clear boundaries, and open communication. However, even this style must be adapted based on the child's age and circumstances.
Different ages require different approaches. From ages 1 to 7, you need to instill discipline firmly; children at this age understand consequences and need clear structure. However, as children grow older, your relationship must shift. You don't want them to be strangers to you or afraid of you. Instead, you become their friend and confidant so they can open up and tell you everything.
One mother shared her experience: "When I was growing up, my mom flogged me. But I got to a stage where we stopped flogging and started talking. She became my best friend." This transformation was possible because the discipline in early years had instilled the foundation, and the later friendship deepened the relationship.
The most effective parents recognize when to adjust their style based on the circumstances. For example:
When a child is sick, you may naturally become more permissive and caring, offering comfort and care. This shows love at a vulnerable time. If you remained strictly authoritative, the child might feel unloved and think no one cares.
One father shared the example of his daughter who kept quitting jobs after two months and asking for money. The parents decided not to give her money anymore. This was not about being wicked; it was about teaching her financial responsibility. At over 20 years old, she needed to learn to manage her own resources.
An authoritarian parent might choose to be more permissive when a child is unwell, offering extra warmth and easing restrictions temporarily. A permissive parent might adopt a stricter approach when a child's safety is at stake.
I had a very stubborn brother who loved climbing mango trees. When he fell and got a fracture, my mother beat him to try to stop the behavior. But constant beating only made him more stubborn; he became hardened and thought, "If I do this, they beat me, so I'll just go my way anyway." When one approach is not working, you must change your strategy. Continuing a failed method only creates resistance.
If you are not a godly person, you cannot automatically raise godly children. Some people say, "I don't want my child to be like this; I don't want them to take after me." But if you don't change your own ways, your children will most likely follow the same path. Children are influenced by what they see in their parents; it enters their subconscious, and they naturally live that way. This is why God chose Abraham specifically because he was a godly person and could raise his children in God's way.
Intentionality in your parenting approach is crucial. Look at the story of Eli and Samuel: Eli was Samuel's mentor and guardian, and the Bible told Samuel in advance what would happen to Eli's children because Eli did not correct them intentionally. Yet Samuel, who witnessed this failure, allowed his own children to fall into similar problems. Intentionality matters—you must be deliberate and active in shaping your children's spiritual growth.
One parent shared a powerful principle: "Don't use a phone without reading the manual; you miss out on maximizing its effectiveness." Similarly, these children are God's gifts and God's heritage. If you really want to understand the model, go back to the Maker. Ask God, "What should be the manner of this child's life? What trades and gifts has He given them? What is His purpose for them?" God will honor your prayer and guide you.
In modern times, an interactive parenting style is very key. Bring yourself to the level of your children and interact with them. Ask them: "This happened. Why did it continue to happen? What have you learned? What is your idea? Here is my idea." In this interactive dialogue, you learn from them and they learn from you. Grow with them and let them grow with you. Sometimes you may even borrow their knowledge and ideas.
One question arose: "How come children who live with people other than their parents sometimes turn out better than children with their biological parents?" The key factor is agreement between parents. The importance of father and mother being in agreement on parenting principles is crucial. When parents don't agree, there is always a problem.
One example was a pastor's wife at church: she was watching her children during prayer and ensuring they were praying too. When one child did something during prayer, the pastor's wife's simple look corrected the behavior, and the child adjusted. When father and mother are in the same agreement about what matters—whether it's faith, work ethic, or responsibility—the child tends to turn out well, about 80% of the time.
Some children who are not biological children but are fostered or adopted actually receive more consistent, agreed-upon parenting because the caregivers are intentional and unified in their approach. They also have fewer options and must comply; this sometimes teaches them resilience and responsibility.
What do you do when you have tried all methods and styles and still have not gotten results?
Submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes we think we know everything, but when we learn to submit to the will and leading of the Holy Spirit, we get better answers. Children are different and behave differently. The way you were brought up may not be the way to bring up your children today. You need the Spirit of God to lead you as to what to do.
Learn to pray as parents. Pray for each child because each child is unique. When you correct, allow the Spirit of God to lead you. Sometimes anger clouds our judgment, and we say things we shouldn't. But when you control yourself and allow the Spirit to lead you, it helps tremendously.
As your children grow up, they have different temperaments. The way you correct one child is not the same way you correct another. When your children become teenagers, ensure they have a mentor they will be accountable to. Most often, teenagers will not open up to their parents, but they will open up to a mentor—a trusted adult, a family friend, or someone they choose and look up to.
Encourage your teenagers to choose their own mentor, someone they respect and can be accountable to. When they have this relationship, they are more likely to be honest about their struggles and responsible in their actions.
Ultimately, remember to use the parental style that best suits your family's unique needs. Don't copy another family's method exactly; trust your judgment under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Every family is different, every child is different, and God will guide you if you remain humble and prayerful.
Father, help us to adopt the right parenting style in every given situation in Jesus' name. Almighty God, we thank you for today. Help each and every one of us to adopt the best parental style in any given situation. In Jesus' mighty name we have prayed. Amen.
