Gospel Contextualization: Sharing the Unchanging Message in a Timely Way

Contextualization is fundamentally about understanding that every person interprets truth, goodness, beauty, morality, and authority differently based on their own worldview and context. It means communicating any message—especially the gospel—in a manner that a hearer can most effectively understand it.
This practice is not something we invented. Christ himself modeled contextualization by taking eternal truths and making them about coins and wheat, using military metaphors when speaking to Roman centurions. As the disciples took the gospel beyond Judea and Samaria into the uttermost parts, they found themselves among peoples who saw and experienced the world entirely differently. If we expect them to understand the gospel the way we understand it, the message won't go very far.
The key principle is this: we take a timeless truth and deliver it in a timely manner. As Paul wrote, "I become all things to all men that I might win some." But here's what matters—we must win them to the actual gospel. If a place looks more American than Christian when we leave, we've failed to contextualize the gospel; we've just exported our culture.
When we talk about culture, we're talking about the explicit markers that unify a group of people—food, music, clothing, ritual, and humor. These markers appear everywhere, not just between countries.
If you're a millennial speaking to Gen Z, you're crossing a cultural barrier. They have different humor, wear different clothes, and listen to different music. The same applies when crossing political, generational, national, or ethnic lines. Any time you step outside your insulated group, some element of contextualization becomes necessary.
This is probably one of the biggest reasons people don't evangelize—fear. How do you talk to somebody who believes different things than you about the most important questions humans have ever asked? But contextualization is like framing a picture. You're not changing the picture itself; you're putting a frame around it to display it properly. The frame might change, but the picture remains the same.
Consider this illustration: Coach Dean Smith, the legendary University of North Carolina basketball coach, had a player from Africa on his team. When the player made a mistake, Coach Smith repeatedly said, "Look at me when I'm talking to you." The player wouldn't comply.
Smith pulled him aside and asked what was wrong. The player respectfully replied, "Coach, where I'm from, for a younger person to look an older person in the eyes is a sign of disrespect."
Smith immediately realized the problem. In American culture, not making eye contact is disrespectful. But in this player's culture, it was the opposite. What did Coach Smith do? He sent his assistant coach to Africa to learn their culture rather than expecting the player to learn his.
Smith understood: "I'm trying to deliver a message. I'm delivering basketball strategy. The win can't be that he looks me in the eyes because that's our culture's version of respect for an elder. I'm going to contextualize how I'm communicating, and I'm going to learn his culture rather than expect him to learn mine."
If we approached gospel efforts with this mentality—saying "I'm going to learn as much as I can about you"—what would be possible?
Look at Peter's first sermon in Acts 2. He wasn't scared; he was filled with the Holy Spirit. He spoke boldly to his Jewish brothers and sisters. He recapitulated the entire Old Testament, pulling the redemptive story through to its conclusion, and put it plainly: "You crucified the Lord of glory." He called them to repentance and baptism, and 3,000 people responded.
Peter was talking to an insider group—his own people. He took a very Jewish approach to a very Jewish audience, and the Holy Spirit cut their hearts with conviction.
But Acts 10 shows a different approach. Peter receives a vision: "Don't call anything unclean that I have made clean." This vision opens the door to understanding that Christ has fulfilled the law. The dietary restrictions that once separated Jews from Gentiles no longer apply.
This leads to Acts 15 and the Jerusalem Council—a crucial moment. The question was stark: How Jewish do you have to be to be a Christ follower? Do you have to be circumcised? Do you have to follow Levitical law? Do you have to follow temple rituals?
Peter stood up and said, "Brothers, let us not make it more difficult for someone to come and follow Christ." The council decided that gentile believers needed only to follow a small number of regulations, primarily to avoid offending their Jewish brothers and sisters.
What the disciples came to understand in Acts 15 is something we must come to understand today: the gospel is transcultural. The gospel is a meta-narrative that sits over and above all human culture. We do not have to bow down to one culture to be Christian.
Christianity stands apart as unique. Almost every major world religion expects you to bow down to one human institution or culture. To be Muslim, even if you're not Arab, you must read the Quran in Arabic. To be Hindu, it's very difficult not to be Indian. Some iterations of religion in the United States have become deeply Americanized.
But Christianity says: we do not expect you to bow down to one time and place in history, one ethnicity, one geographical marker, and declare that this is what it means to be Christian. God made this message to fit in every culture. It actually supersedes every human culture.
This opens us to live out Acts 15: "Let's not make it more difficult." The well-intentioned missions movements of the past often just made people more American. But when we left, they couldn't continue being American. We built American buildings, taught American songs, and expected American styles of worship. But if we export the gospel itself, the gospel can grow in any culture around the world.
This gospel is not specific to America. It's not even specific to Israel. In Acts 10, the first recorded gentile convert is Cornelius, a Roman centurion—a leader of Rome's military. His entire family is baptized, and the Holy Spirit falls on them just as at Pentecost. This is God's affirmation: they are included.
One apologetic for Christianity's truth is remarkable: the Bible's holy text was written in three primary languages—Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. No other holy book has this makeup. It's as if to say, "Come to me, nations." When Christ followers in the Roman and Greek world began following Jesus, they didn't ask, "How Jewish do we have to be?" Instead, they asked how to live out their worship and their sexuality—the timeless truths that transcend culture—in their own contexts.
For two thousand years, as Christ followers, we must ask: What flag flies at the very top of the flagpole of our heart? Is it Jesus Christ, or is it another nationality, ethnicity, or worldview?
This is where the problem lies today. Many Christians have misordered their loves. Think of the order of operations in mathematics—if you prioritize the numbers wrong and perform the equations in the wrong sequence, you get the wrong answer. The same is true spiritually. If we don't order our loves properly, we get the wrong result when it comes to sexuality, politics, or geopolitical concerns.
We see this even in Acts. Peter and Paul came to a collision point over an ordering of loves. Paul lovingly confronted Peter directly. In Galatians, Paul addresses how Peter had become "more Jewish than he should" in certain contexts, rejecting what God had for the Greeks. Paul corrected him because he had misordered his loves.
We must do theology in community. We need trusted people around us who will say, "Hey, speak to my blind spots. Love me well." This is how we keep our primary allegiance clear.
Americans especially struggle with this because our nation was born out of rejection of a king. We've worked hard to ensure we don't have kings over us. But as Christians, we must understand what it means for Christ to be our king and for us to be part of the kingdom of God. This is increasingly important as we live as Christians in the Western world in the twenty-first century.
Acts 17 shows contextualization at its finest. Paul arrives in Athens and doesn't immediately preach. Instead, he observes and listens. He looks around the city and says, "I have observed your city and seen the things you worship." He notices the temples, the philosophical schools—Epicureans, Stoics—each representing different worldviews and ways of answering life's big questions.
He finds an altar to "an unknown god" and says, "This unknown god that you worship—let me proclaim him to you." He had done his homework. He wasn't presumptive; he walked around and observed. He found the lowest common denominator: all of humanity are made to worship. Every human being, 24/7, 365 days a year, cannot push pause on worship.
Paul encouraged their worship even as he redirected it: "You've been worshiping something unknown. I want to tell you about the one you're actually made to worship." He didn't try to resolve everything. He just got to the basic bottom line: You're a worshiper. Let me tell you about the one you're made to worship.
What's remarkable is that this wasn't merely a Socratic seminar—it was a trial with life and death stakes. From the marketplace to Mars Hill is about a twelve-minute walk. In those twelve minutes, Paul prepared his entire presentation. He was convincing enough that some of the Areopagites wanted to hear him further and became followers of Yahweh.
One profound lesson from Acts 17: Paul was very familiar with Epicurean and Stoic philosophy. Whether he had studied these for years or learned them during his time in Athens, he understood them. This is something Christians in our culture today must embrace.
Many of us grew up in contexts where the question felt forbidden: "As Christians, are we even allowed to familiarize ourselves with other belief systems?" But Paul, perhaps the greatest evangelist of all time, was effective because he took time to understand how the hearer answered the biggest questions of existence.
Paul didn't simply say, "I'm a Jew; let me tell you what Jews believe." Instead, he spoke in ways that an Epicurean could say yes or no to Jesus. He did the same for Stoics. Everywhere he went—whether in the synagogue with Jews or in the public square with gentiles—he preached differently because he was talking to different people.
This plays out in his letters too. Whether writing to Galatia, Corinth, Ephesus, or elsewhere, Paul was fully cognizant of the story each city was telling. He framed the gospel in light of that story.
Personal experience bears this out. When you walk into a Hindu temple, a New Age shop, or any place representing a different belief system, and you demonstrate genuine interest—not to agree, but to understand—something shifts. When you've clearly read the same books and represent their arguments fairly (what we call "steel-manning" rather than "strawmanning"), people respond.
The effect is powerful. When a Christian expresses genuine interest in what someone believes—clearly stating you don't agree but that you want to understand them—people feel respected. They don't feel treated as fools or heathens. And when people see that you've done your best to understand how and why they answer life's questions, they become more willing to listen to how you answer those questions.
Not every Christian is called to formal interfaith work, but every Christian is called to carry the burden Paul carried. In Acts 17, when Paul looks out over Athens filled with temples to unknown gods, his heart is burdened. That burden should drive us to genuine curiosity and a willingness to listen to people's answers to the big questions: What do you believe about God? About beauty, truth, and goodness?
When we listen first and frame the gospel in response to their story rather than imposing our culture, we create space for the gospel to be heard.
Paul summarizes this entire approach in 1 Corinthians 9:19-23:
For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all that I might win more of them. To the Jews, I became as a Jew in order to win Jews. To those under the law, I became as one under the law, though not being myself under the law, that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law, I became as one outside the law, not being outside the law of God, but under the law of Christ, that I might win those outside the law. To the weak, I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people that by all means I might save some. I do it for the sake of the gospel that I may share with them in its blessings.
This passage captures the heart of contextualization. Paul's brilliance is on full display. He became as a Jew to Jews, as one under the law to those under the law, as one outside the law to those outside the law—but always under the law of Christ, always for the sake of the gospel.
The beautiful thing about contextualization is that we're not changing the picture; we're just changing the frame. The gospel message remains constant. But we deliver it in ways that our hearers can actually receive it. We demonstrate respect by learning their story. We show dignity by understanding their worldview. And when we do, we create space for genuine conversation about the most important questions.
This is how we become all things to all people—not by abandoning who we are or compromising the gospel, but by laying aside cultural preferences and secondary identities so that Christ can be clearly seen. Let the flag of Jesus Christ fly highest on the flagpole of your heart, and let everything else be subservient to that allegiance.
