Turn with me to Genesis 2:24. "That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife and they become one flesh."
We live in a world obsessed with proposals but allergic to commitment. We celebrate the surprise. We celebrate the ring. We celebrate the pictures. But covenant is not a moment—covenant is for a lifetime.
Culture has trained many of us to pursue the feeling of love while avoiding the discipline of commitment. Shows that glorify emotion like "Love is Blind," "Married at First Sight," and "90 Day Fiance" celebrate the moment, but not the marathon. Today, I'm not preaching how to get married. I'm preaching how to be ready and how to choose wisely.
Singleness is not a curse. You are not obligated to do everything simply because you are available. Psalm 139:16 says, "Your eyes saw my unformed substance and in your book all the days of my life were written before ever they took shape when as yet there was none of them." Your single season was written by God. You can't discount your life and wait until marriage for it to count.
The Bible promises in Isaiah 34:16: "Look in the scroll of the Lord and read. None of these will be missing. Not one will lack her mate. For it is his mouth that has given the order and his spirit will gather them together."
Marriage is spiritual, and so is singlehood. Adam received his assignment while still single. He named Eve and recognized who she was before they married. Singlehood has a purpose.
Here's the truth: God has a checklist, and often our list doesn't match His. The title for today is "Before You Pop the Question"—make sure you're using God's list.
God defines marriage before we desire marriage. Genesis 1:27 tells us, "God created mankind in his own image. In the image of God he created them. Male and female he created them."

Then Genesis 2:24 gives us His complete blueprint in one verse:
"This is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife and they become one flesh."
Leave. Cleave. One flesh.
This is not poetry—it's a pattern.
Marriage is not just a feeling you fall into. Marriage is a structure God designed. And if God designed it, God defines it.
Here's what we miss: We ask, "Do I like them?" But we should ask, "Can I carry covenant with them?"
Capacity is the ability to handle weight without breaking character. I have three utensils here: a spoon, a mug, and a jar. Everyone in this room—and every potential partner—is one of these three.
Spoon capacity is limited. This is how much pressure you can take and what you'll be able to keep when stress comes to your marriage.
Mug capacity means you've done some work—school, doing things by the book, you look great. But you process relationships through your intellect and feelings. You feel good one day; you don't the next.
Jar capacity is someone who has been working on their purpose. They're not waiting for a relationship to rescue them. They're letting the Holy Spirit work. Their identity is not formed by you. The jar has the ability to pour, but wisdom says a jar should overflow, not pour out.
Luke 14:28 asks: "Which of you desiring to build a tower, desiring to build a marriage, does not first sit down and count the cost whether he has enough to complete it?" Be honest with yourself: Am I a spoon? Am I a mug? Or am I a jar?
In the first couple of years of marriage, you'll show your colors. You'll wonder why you're having conversations about foundational beliefs when you're both Christian. You have a form of unity, but you're not quite united.
Capacity asks: Can you carry covenant? Can you hold weight?
Some people can handle a wedding day but cannot handle a marriage. We work toward something that ends in a day but not toward something meant to extend a lifetime. Marriage comes with weight—conflicts, pressure, responsibility, disappointment, opportunities for growth and change.
The question is not: Are we in love? The question is: Do I have the capacity to carry this love faithfully?
Genesis 2:24 says, "This is why a man leaves." You cannot build a new home with an old mindset. Some relationships struggle because two people married but nobody left their old home. They left the house but didn't leave the dependence on their parents. The parents are directing how to run your own home, but two unique identities are coming together.
If you can't leave, you can't cleave.
Genesis 24:65-67 tells the story of Rebecca and Isaac:
"Rebecca asked the servant, 'Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?' 'He is my master,' the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself. Then the servant told Isaac all he had done. Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebecca. So she became his wife, and he loved her. And Isaac was comforted after his mother's death."
Isaac found comfort in Rebecca. Marriage is not about your spouse being your savior—only Jesus can save. But a healthy covenant becomes a safe place where you can comfortably heal.
Healing requires support, patience, room to grow, and the capacity to stay gentle. Don't marry somebody who needs you to carry what only God can heal. Healing is possible when covenant is built on compassion.
Here's a practical filter for dating: Don't look for potential. Look for scalability. It's not what they promise; it's what they produce.
What are they doing right now with what they already have? That's often the best indicator of whether God wants to bring more.
Abraham was the father of one, but in him was the capacity of nations. Genesis 12:1-3 records God's promise:
"Now the Lord said to Abraham, go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you, and I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing."
Galatians 3:7-9 confirms that this was fulfilled: "Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham... the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham saying in you shall all the nations be blessed."
You have to have vision: Is this person's potential scalable? Do they have clear purpose, or are they waiting for somebody else to give them purpose? Are they able to support what God has called you to do?
For women especially: Can the man cover what God has called you to do? It can be frustrating if God has called you into something and the other person cannot see it. You'll drop what God placed in your hand in favor of compromise.
The Greek definition of kindness is chrestos—active goodness. Kindness is the property and quality of how you treat others.
I'm baffled when someone says, "Well, he's kind to me. He's nice to me—but he's not nice to anybody else." I'll help you: He is trying to win you over. Eventually, he'll tire of the mask and reveal his true nature.
That's why it's necessary to allow time to reveal whom you say you want to marry.
Do they love like Christ does when they don't have to? That is the test.
Matthew 22:37-39 says:
"Jesus replied, 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment, and the second is like it. Love your neighbor as yourself.'"
It didn't select which neighbor. Kindness is not just being nice. Kindness is the fruit of a submitted life.
Integrity is who you are when nobody's watching. But kindness is what you do when you don't have to do it. Anybody is kind when it benefits them. Anybody goes the extra mile when they get something in return. Character is revealed when there's a cost to kindness.
Observe these things:
Kindness starts with Jesus being first. Matthew 22:37 teaches us to love the Lord with all our heart. How do you love someone if you don't love the one who provided that love to us?
The love will wear out in your relationship if that person and you don't love Christ. The center must be Christ, not the other person. If Jesus is not first, your relationship becomes an idol—an insatiable bucket where you want your spouse to pour and lavish all their love on you, where you must be the center of attention.
Your spouse cannot be your savior. God does that naturally; you don't need your spouse to do that for you.
When Rebecca saw Isaac, she covered herself. Hebrews 13:4 says:
"Let marriage be held in honor, esteemed, worthy, precious, of great prize, and especially dear in all things."
The veil marked a holy posture—a readiness of honor. She wasn't entering marriage casually. The veil's origin was not beauty; the veil's origin was holiness, honor, and submission to the Holy Spirit as she submitted to Christ.
For married couples: We unveil our spouses when we dishonorably talk about them—not to find solutions, but to complain. What God has covered, we uncover, and we leave our marriage open to demonic attacks. When we open our mouths to complain rather than solve, we're making a prayer the enemy hears: "This is solid ground for me to operate."
What was once a division becomes a gulf, and it's harder to return to oneness.
Honor matters. Reverence matters. It doesn't start when you're interested in somebody; it continues into the relationship—even when that person doesn't deserve it by your estimation. But you didn't deserve to be forgiven either, yet you are.
You don't have to guess kindness; you can observe it. It's:
Some of us are truth-tellers without love. We just want to spill our guts. For what purpose? Did that person get better?
Instead, say: "Hey babe, help me understand. I saw that you did this. I know that's not your intent, and I'm not saying it to hurt you, but it did. Can you tell me a little bit where you're coming from so I can understand, be in lockstep with you, and forgive quicker next time?"
Kindness is patience when it would be easier to snap.
To the women: Sometimes we are kinder to strangers and meaner to our spouses. Watch your tone. They're not your child. There is someone else in the covenant watching how you speak to the gift that was given to you.
If you're upset, drop your voice low: "Hey babe..." But if you sound like a mad banshee coming down the stairs, screaming at the gift that's supposed to hold you, hold your capacity, love you, and care for you—then you wonder why he doesn't want to talk at the end of the day. He doesn't know which personality he's going to get.
To the husbands: Watch your tone. Watch how you provide. When your wife approaches emotionally, acknowledge her emotions, then provide facts. Give her safety. Say: "I can trust you with feedback." When she approaches from another angle, she's trying to see if you'll capture her emotions and hold her heart softly.
Consistency asks: Can we be trusted over time? Are they steady enough for a lifetime?
Genesis 2:24 (ESV) says:
"Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh."
Hold fast when you feel it. Hold fast when you don't. Hold fast when it costs you. Hold fast when it's inconvenient. All these things happen in marriage.
Marriage is not built on what love does repeatedly; it's built on what love feels occasionally.
I don't feel like loving, but I repeatedly love. I premeditate my love. It's given to you regardless of how you treat me. It belongs to you regardless of how I feel. That is a position you have to decide. It's a decision. I decide Monday through Sunday to love. Period.
Chemistry can be instant, but covenant is proven over time.
It is not the promises they make you. It is the pattern of behavior that they show you in unguarded moments. Some people know how to frame the shot for you. It's not about the picture they're sending; it's about the consistency of their pattern.
Do not get deceived by somebody who presents well but doesn't have a good name in other spheres.
Ruth 2:68 tells the story of Ruth and Boaz:
The moment Boaz found out who Ruth was, he said, "Go ahead and leave grain for her to glean." He wasn't going to get anything out of it. There was no benefit Ruth could provide to him. He was consistent. He ensured she was protected. He said, "Make sure that nobody harasses her." He took on her well-being.
In fact, he wasn't supposed to be the one to marry her. There was somebody closer who could have married her, but he took up the position. The Bible says he stood at the gates and had conversation—meaning he held capacity for her and set up territory on her behalf.
Inconsistent people have big words but small follow-through. They apologize without change. They talk spiritual but live unstable. They know what to tell you, how to say it, what to say to get you. They say, "I'm working on it." Then work on it. There should be evidence of you actually doing the thing you said you're working on.
There's something that gives me such peace in my home: my husband is metronomic. He is predictable in his behavior every day.
When we first married, it used to drive me insane because I like spontaneity. But he is consistent. "Ambi, if you put this thing here, you won't have to look for it another time. If you just have a system for how you get ready for Sundays, you won't feel rushed. I have to forgive you before you come down the stairs." He is consistent. I don't have to guess.
Those who are dating, be consistent. And watch for someone to be consistent with you. If they ghost you, they are a ghoster. If they ghost you in conversation, recalibrate yourself. Is this what you want?
If they don't show up when you guys have agreed on something, that's a sign.
Ephesians 5:25 says:
"Christ loved the church and gave himself."
The Bible says that even before the foundations of the world were framed, He had already been slain. This is not a mood kind of love. It's not based on your mood. It's not convenience-based. This is covenant love.
So the question is simple: Can they keep loving when it costs them something? And the question for you is: Can I keep loving?
Consistency protects oneness. One flesh cannot survive if someone is always half in.
At the altar, you face each other—you're looking at each other. You don't face the crowd. The crowd is a spectator to your covenant; they're not part of it. This is the picture of oneness. It's steady.
But when you're half in, you come out of that union. You hold hands here, but you're looking somewhere else. You're half in. What that does is leave you open to the enemy.
The enemy can swiftly bring something challenging into your lives, and you don't know how to stand together.
You're believing God for miracles in your life, but what creates unity is what made the enemy scared. The devil was afraid that what was happening in heaven would happen on earth. God said, "Let us make man in our image." There was agreement in heaven, unity that we now get to embody.
So the enemy comes to the one who was subject to suggestion—before the husband had clued them in as to the direction of their family. The enemy says, "Turn this way. You're by yourself now." And he can make suggestions.
The miracles in your home are delayed because you don't have unity.
That covenant, that decision of unity, begins before you say "I do." I decide: Nobody and their mother is going to come between my husband and me. It's a decision you make in your heart. In this, we're together. We pray together. We stand together. We make decisions together.
I believe God is calling The Well Church to have healthy marriages.
I am believing and declaring by faith: For those who want to be found, they will be found. They will find themselves in healthy unions, in healthy covenants with one another.
Not one marriage in this church will be lost in the name of Jesus. Not one.
We plead the blood of Jesus over every marriage. We plead the blood over every single person in this house. We will be a church that is strong in unions in the name of Jesus.
Father, even as we're asking for a thousand more, let us have a thousand more marriages in the name of Jesus. In the name of Jesus, this house is shielded by the blood.
So the checklist is capacity, kindness, and consistency.
If the answer for you is "not yet," this is wisdom for you. This is where you need to build. Repeat after me:
I want God to build capacity in me, and grow kindness in me, and establish consistency in me. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Father in the name of Jesus, I thank you that for each person in this room, you are building capacity, kindness, and consistency. For the single, I thank you, Lord God, for making them mature enough to recognize the poor places in their lives and to get prepared for the kind of marriage they seek.
For the engaged couple, I pray that you make a decision for the kind of union that you want to have.
And Lord God, I thank you for the married people in this house. Father, re-establish them again. Reignite their love, their passion for one another. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
