Walking in the Spirit—Seed, Growth, and Fight

Paul's letter to the Galatians illuminates a profound truth about the Christian life: there is a constant tension between the desires of the flesh and the leading of the Holy Spirit. When Paul writes, "Walk by the spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh," he's not merely offering advice—he's describing the fundamental dynamic of spiritual transformation.
Notice the contrast: the spirit desires things for you, while the flesh is always desiring things from you. It's a battle for your soul, yet your spirit is already won with God. The real battleground is your mind, will, and emotions. You may feel caught in the middle, torn between competing desires. On one hand, you want to love something; on the other, you want to indulge in something else. This internal conflict is real, and it's part of the Christian experience.
Paul doesn't mince words about what the flesh produces: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies. These are not abstract concepts—they're the lived reality of what happens when we feed our flesh.
But then comes the transformative conjunction: "But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control." Against such things, there is no law. You won't find a statute banning love or joy or peace. These are the natural expressions of a life aligned with God's character.
Understanding the fruit of the spirit requires understanding a process with three essential stages.
When you accept Christ as your savior and put your trust in Him, the Holy Spirit becomes your deposit—the seed of all spiritual fruit. Here's the crucial realization: everything that tree will ever be is already found in that seed. When God plants His Spirit in you, He doesn't create new DNA. Everything you need is already implanted.
Peter writes, "God has given you all things that pertain to life and godliness." You already have it. This is what makes Christianity radically different from most world religions. Almost every other religion says, "Climb the ladder to attain something more." But the gospel says, God came down the ladder so that you could be more.
Don't go looking on some spiritual mountaintop or embark on a pilgrimage to find love, joy, peace, or the other fruits. They're already there, deposited in you by the Holy Spirit. The question isn't where to find them—it's how to partner with what God is already doing in your life.
If the seed is already there, the natural question becomes: how does it grow? The answer is both simple and profound: fruit grows naturally. You don't see an apple tree anguishing over the development of apples or deciding to try something different. The tree simply produces the fruit that's in its nature to produce.
Jesus said, "You'll know a tree by its fruit." A good tree produces good fruit; a bad tree produces bad fruit. There's no mixing oranges and apples. Growth happens when we draw near to God, not when we strive to be more loving or kinder.
This is why we call these the "means of grace." These are the rhythmic disciplines and postures that become channels for God's grace to flow freely:
The more time you spend with the Lord and with others in community, the more grace flows into your life and the seed develops. People will notice the change. They'll say, "Something's different about you," because grace is actively flowing and transforming you from the inside out.
Part of this process is a real, internal fight. There are things you want that the Spirit opposes, and there are things the Spirit wants for you that your flesh resists. This isn't a quick overnight victory—it's an ongoing battle.
Here's the critical distinction: your flesh always drives you; the spirit leads you. The flesh is a slave driver that says, "You need this. You have to do this. You can't resist this." It produces that pit-in-your-stomach guilt, that shame, that compulsion to feed the desire.
But the Spirit leads gently: "Have you thought about forgiving them? Why don't you let that go and move on? Let's look at the good things happening in your life." Or sometimes the Spirit says, "We've avoided this for a while. Why don't we unpack this?"
Here's the hard truth: most of us are far more in tune with negative emotions than positive ones. When I ask you to feel guilt, you can do it instantly—that pit in your stomach, that nauseous feeling. But when I ask you to feel innocent or to pin down what real joy feels like? That's radically difficult for most people.
This is why the battle matters. If you feed your flesh—if you ruminate on the offense, replay the conversation, imagine what you'll say next time—you're strengthening that drive. But if you feed the spirit—if you choose forgiveness, focus on God's goodness, and let go of the offense—the fruit naturally grows.
There's an old parable of two dogs. Every day, a man in the park feeds two dogs. A boy asks him one day, "How do you always know which one will win the fight?" The old man replies, "The one I feed the most." The battle for your life is determined by what you feed the most. Are you feeding your flesh or your spirit?
When we talk about the fruit of the spirit, we're talking about Christ. These nine expressions reveal the personality and attitudes of being Christlike. They answer the question: What was Jesus actually like?
Love is not primarily a feeling—it's selflessness. "No greater love has a man than he would lay down his life for others." Real love puts others first.
Joy is delight in God that transcends circumstance. Happiness depends on your situation, but joy—the joy of the Lord—is your strength even in the valley. No disease, no downturn, no circumstance can take away your delight in the Lord.
Peace is resting in God's control. You may not understand everything happening around you, but you trust that God has it under control.
Patience is trusting God's timing. Impatience comes from a secret timeline in your mind that God isn't meeting. But when the Spirit is at work, you become okay with God's timeline: "Lord, I wanted that, but I know You have something especially for me."
Kindness is compassion put into action. It's not just a smile or a feeling; it's actively doing what helps another person.
Goodness is doing what is right—not for recognition or status, but simply because it's right. It might be picking up a piece of paper when no one's watching, doing the menial task that goes unseen. This is goodness for goodness' sake.
Faithfulness is staying true.
Gentleness (or meekness) is complete strength bridled and under control. It's knowing what's needed at the appropriate time. Sometimes we need to press in with directness; sometimes we need to be soft and tender. Jesus writing in the sand for the woman caught in adultery was gentleness. But His confrontation of the Pharisees' pride required directness.
Self-control is mastering your desires through the Spirit.
A great pastor from Oregon, Ron Mehl, once observed that some Christians focus exclusively on the fruit of the spirit—the character and personality of Christ—while others champion only the gifts of the spirit—the power of Christ—but lack the fruit. He concluded: "Both must be present to continue the ministry of Jesus. The power of Christ and the personality of Christ produced the ministry of Christ."
This is crucial. If we want to be the church God has called us to be, we need both. We need the power of Christ to do what seems impossible, but we also need the personality of Christ to yield that power properly. A person with power but no fruit is dangerous. A person with fruit but no power lacks the ability to transform situations. We need the power of Christ with the personality and character of Christ.
As we close, consider Psalm 23 through the lens of the Holy Spirit. David, in his prophetic way, was seeing what the Holy Spirit would be to God's church:
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My cup overflows.
Notice the language: He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness. I walk in the spirit. He comforts me. My cup overflows.
If you want your cup to overflow this morning, raise your hands and say, "Lord, Holy Spirit, let my cup overflow. Immerse me completely in Your life. Let me walk in the spirit. Let the fruit grow naturally in me. Let Your power and personality flow through me for the glory of Your name."
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow you all the days of your life, and you will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
