In recent weeks we have seen quite a lot of injustice in our world globally—conflicts continuing in places like Ukraine, Lebanon, and Iran. But also we have seen chaos in our own country. An 18-year-old was stabbed, then arrested by police, and died in custody as he cried for help. They ignored his pleas—an injustice that has caused much anger, an injustice that has itself been capitalised on by others to justify violence on the streets. Injustice creates more injustice.
We've also seen in Belfast a gruesome attack which led to riots and the deliberate targeting of people's homes—racist attacks, homes of asylum seekers burnt out, racist abuse hurled at people of colour, attempted pogroms on the streets of a British city. Our country is divided, filled with injustice, and many communities feel fearful.
The global church faces injustice too. In recent weeks, 30 Christians were killed and hundreds more displaced when mobs attacked their homes and burnt down a 100-year-old church—simply because they believed in Jesus.
Perhaps this week you face injustice of your own: a difficult manager or colleague, a relational breakdown where someone refuses to say sorry and only heaps more difficulty on you. Life is messy. Will someone come and sort it out? This morning's passage in Zephaniah wants to answer that very question: will the Lord allow injustice to go unpunished? Is there hope for God's people when they face persecution?
Last week we saw that while God's judgment falls on the nations, it also brings hope for God's people. In verses 4–15, we see judgment described in a tour of the compass—west, east, south, and north—showing us one big truth: God's judgment is total. No place is spared.
The Philistines, Israel's old enemy (remember Goliath), are judged—their major cities, Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, and Ekron, destroyed, their society breaking down. But because of that judgment, God's people are given blessing: they will enjoy the land as pasture.
"The land will belong to the remnant of the people of Judah. There they will find pasture... The Lord their God will care for them. He will restore their fortunes." (v7)
When Zephaniah speaks of Gaza, he is in no way speaking about the current conflict there—these verses could never justify what is happening today. Zephaniah is speaking of judgment on the Philistines in his own day, a judgment that would come through Babylon. But that near judgment points forward to a greater one, the ultimate Day of the Lord—a pattern typical of Old Testament prophecy, where a historical judgment foreshadows the final one.
The Day of the Lord is not solely a day of wrath, but a day of blessing and rest for God's people—the faithful remnant who sought the Lord. That's true for God's people today too. The Day of the Lord is bad news for the wicked but good news for the humble, for those who know their weakness and trust in him. If we trust in Jesus, we won't just inherit Canaan or the houses of Ashkelon—we will inherit the whole earth. The meek shall inherit the earth. That's rest from injustice, rest for Christians suffering persecution in Ethiopia, peace for those facing rioting mobs outside their door—a new world where the Prince of Peace rules, where people can lie down in the evening safe and secure.
Here the Lord acts as the high court judge, declaring the charge: Moab and Ammon have insulted and threatened God's people simply because they belong to the Lord. Scripture is full of examples—Nahash the Ammonite threatening to gouge out the eyes of a Judean city, his son Hanun publicly humiliating David's servants, Balak hiring Balaam to curse Israel. These nations showed destructive, murderous hatred for God's people.
But the Lord is not indifferent. He has seen and heard every taunt. Like a parent at the school gates who sees their child being victimised, love compels him to act, to defend his people. That's true today too: if you're trusting in Jesus, the Lord sees and cares for you—even when the world mocks you for being a Christian, even in mistreatment past or future.
All people will give an account, including for what is done against you. Be encouraged this week whatever opposition you face—whether pressure at work over your convictions, or far more serious persecution like Christians killed by their neighbours in Ethiopia. We have a God who sees, who cares, and who can sympathise with our suffering because he experienced it himself—the Lord Jesus was taunted and mocked on the cross, hurled with insults, crowned with cruel thorns. When you suffer, you are in good company, sharing in the sufferings of Christ.
If you're trusting in Jesus, the Lord is never angry against you—he is angry for you. His love for you moves him to action.
Moab and Ammon were without excuse—living near the ruins of Sodom and Gomorrah, they had evidence of God's anger right on their doorstep, yet they ignored the warning. And yet amazingly, judgment on the nations leads to conversion:
"The Lord will be awesome to them when he destroys all the gods of the earth. Distant nations will bow down to him, all of them in their own lands." (v11)
This points forward to the ultimate Day of the Lord at Golgotha, where God's righteous judgment was poured out not on us but on Jesus. Because we—the nations, the Gentiles—have seen and heard about that great day on the cross, instead of running from God, it has caused us to run to him.
A short, sweeping verse: "You Kushites too will be slain by my sword." Interestingly, Zephaniah himself had Kushite heritage through his father—he was given the hard job of speaking judgment to the very people that made up who he was. Speaking truth about God's judgment to your own family is never easy, yet Zephaniah knew God's word must be spoken, and there is always hope that the nations can find salvation through it.
Why no listed crimes for Cush? Because Cush represents every nation of the earth—a great empire tempted, like any superpower, to trust in its own strength rather than the Lord. If even mighty Cush is not beyond God's reach, then every nation is within reach. Every nation that trusts in itself, that bows to idols, must one day recognise that the Lord alone should be first.
Assyria, the great superpower of the day, known for military and economic strength—a bit like America today.
"This is the city of revelry that lived in safety. She said to herself, 'I am the one, and there is none besides me.'" (v15)
Assyria's capital, Nineveh, grew wealthy through resource extraction from smaller nations. In many ways Nineveh resembles London—a city with monuments to past imperial glory and, today, monuments to economic glory in its very skyline, declaring: we are successful, there is none besides us.
Human pride is cross-cultural and timeless. We are all tempted to build a name for ourselves. But the Lord will stretch out his hand against human pride and make the great city a wasteland—desert owls, screech owls, hedgehogs moving into the ruins of what was once glorious. When God's judgment comes, everything is upended.
God's judgment covers every direction—but the question remains: how will Judah, how will God's people, respond?
"Woe to the city of oppressors, rebellious and defiled... She does not trust in the Lord. She does not draw near to her God." (3:1–2)
When the Judeans first heard this, they likely assumed the Lord was still talking about Nineveh—yes, go get them! But the Lord is describing Jerusalem, the city of God's own people. God's judgment is not only for those bad nations out there—it starts at home.
Judah failed because they resembled the wickedness of the world around them—Jerusalem became an exact copy of Nineveh. And the church today is often no different from the world. Leaders were corrupt, judges preyed on the vulnerable rather than protecting them, priests led people into idolatry rather than teaching God's holiness. We've seen Christian leaders fail and even exacerbate injustice rather than stop it. All people are the same.
If that's all we had—confrontation with our failure—we would be doomed. If the sermon simply said "clean up your act, be better," that would be a disservice. When shame and self-effort are our only motivation for holiness, we are always doomed to failure. Good rules don't make you good. The law shows us our sin and convicts us of our need, but it cannot deliver us—it's a burden we cannot carry. God's people cannot reform themselves. So what hope is there?
"The Lord within her is righteous. He does no wrong. Morning by morning he dispenses his justice. And every new day he does not fail." (v5)
Even in the midst of Jerusalem's oppression, idolatry, and wickedness, the Lord had not departed his people—he was still dwelling among them. That's good news for us too. God does not depart from you because you are sinful; instead, he supplies more and more of his grace to help you in your weakness. My faithfulness does not sustain me—great is thy faithfulness, as the old hymn says. When you are weak, be comforted that he is faithful even when you aren't. Because of Jesus, the Lord is a loving father who corrects and restores us when we fail. We need only wait on him.
"Therefore, wait for me, declares the Lord, for the day I will stand up to testify... The whole world will be consumed by the fire of my jealous anger." (v8)
There is great injustice in our world, and we fail to be holy—but the Lord is gracious and kind. All who are humble, who know their weakness, are called to trust and wait on him. And to wait on the Lord simply means to seek and trust in Jesus.
If we are trusting in Jesus, the jealous anger we deserve has already been poured out—the Lord Jesus has been consumed by the anger of the Lord in our place. The Day of the Lord is not destruction for God's people but a refining fire that purifies—a day of hope for all who seek and trust in him.
If you're a Christian here this morning, the solution is not to try harder or feel guilty, but simply to wait on him. Seek Jesus. He will judge the wicked, restore justice, and give you rest for your soul. The Lord Jesus will not come on that great day to wipe you out, but to wipe every tear from your eye.
And if you don't know Jesus, I implore you to seek him. He promises that all who come to him he will never turn away. God's judgment does not mean death and destruction—it is actually a call for all peoples, in all places, to come to him. Jesus has already taken the wrath that you deserve. There is great hope on the day of judgment—the day of the cross—where love and justice were perfectly fulfilled in him. All nations, looking at judgment, can know it is a day of hope, and so we wait on him until the day Jesus returns.
