Welcome back to the Menlo Midweek Podcast. Over seven weeks, we've explored the world's major worldviews—Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Mormonism, Catholicism, and Agnosticism—asking a fundamental question: What do I bring? What do I do? How do I know it's enough? This week, we turn our focus directly toward the heart of Christianity: the Gospel.
When we started this series, our goal was to present each worldview fairly and thoroughly. We didn't want to punch down or misrepresent. Instead, we asked: What would someone of that faith actually tell you? Taking them at their word, we then showed the contrast with the Gospel.
We also assumed that unchurched people and people of different faiths might be listening. We wanted to communicate in a way that if you invite a coworker, neighbor, or family member of another faith, they'd be glad they came. We wouldn't be embarrassed they came. And hopefully, we've been training people on how to speak respectfully across lines of faith.
It's been amazing to hear from people who listened, realized that Jesus is actually the way, and said yes to Him—even without a formal altar call in the message. That's the Holy Spirit's work, and we're grateful.
One key insight from our opening illustration: Rick Singer, the mastermind of Operation Varsity Blues, wasn't really selling education—he was selling certainty. He offered wealthy parents a way to guarantee their children's admission to elite universities. The appeal was simple: Stop worrying. This is done.
We're all susceptible to certainty. We buy extended warranties. We pay for walk-away insurance at the rental counter. We want something to be finished and taken care of—especially when it comes to heaven.
But there's a subtle danger here. We don't just want certainty that we're going to heaven. We want certainty that this is done, and now I get to live however I want. We've missed the point: the Gospel isn't the finish line—it's the starting line. Salvation is not a transaction that ends; it's the beginning of a relationship that transforms everything.
A bribe can get you in, but it can never make you belong.
There's a crucial difference between access and belonging. Let me illustrate with a story from college.
I attended Moody Bible College in downtown Chicago. I was broke—my checking account had $12 in it. Yet I would study in the lobbies of prestigious buildings around the city. I looked the part. I acted like I belonged. But I didn't. I was just warm and had a place to study.
I also catered as one of my seven jobs to pay for school. I wore a thrift store tuxedo—it cost about twenty dollars and looked fine. On Friday nights, I'd go from catering straight to the Drake Hotel on Michigan Avenue, one of the most prestigious hotels in Chicago. I'd sit there in my thrift store tux, drinking coffee, pretending to belong among people with far more wealth and status than me.
But here's what happens: someone asks you a question. Someone looks at your resume more closely. Someone realizes you don't have the income, the connections, the background to actually belong there. And suddenly you're exposed. You realize you were just performing.
This is the danger of performative religion. If our connection to Jesus is based on religion rather than relationship—if we're just performing, just playing a part—then the second and third questions will expose us. We'll feel like frauds, because we are.
But the Gospel offers something different: cheerful confidence and cheerful humility. I have genuine confidence because the most important thing in my life—my standing with God—isn't dependent on my performance. It's secure because of what Jesus did for me before I was ever born (Ephesians 1). And I have humility because I don't have to prove myself. I can lose a debate. I can lose my job. I can face hardship. I don't have to be the most impressive person in the room because my identity isn't rooted in my achievement.
Many Christians have pieces of the Gospel scattered throughout their understanding, but they've never heard the whole story. The Bible tells one comprehensive story:
When we over-index on just one of these, we get distorted Christianity:
Each piece matters. The entire Biblical narrative—from Genesis to Revelation—follows this pattern. When we understand it, we get a balanced, complete view of the Gospel.
Christianity's claim is radical: God doesn't send a better ladder. He comes down Himself.
Every other religious system is about climbing—performing, proving, earning your way to God. But the Gospel is inverted. Jesus describes the Kingdom of Heaven as an "upside down kingdom." So it makes perfect sense that it starts with an upside down ladder—God coming down to us.
This isn't just a nice theological idea. As Paul says, if Christ didn't actually die and rise again, Christians should be pitied most of all (1 Corinthians 15:19). We didn't need a good idea. We needed someone to actually take our place.
A God who doesn't demand justice and holiness isn't worth worshipping. A God who isn't loving enough to intervene when we're helpless isn't worth worshipping. We need grace and truth together. The incarnation—God becoming human in Jesus—is how that happens.
Jesus is full of grace, full of truth. Every distorted gospel comes from turning one or both of those down.
When grace goes thin, we become harsh and judgmental. When truth goes thin, we become mushy and permissive. But Jesus held both perfectly.
Historian John Dickson wrote about first-century Christians using a quote from Tertullian. Early Christians were confusing to outsiders because they had cheerful confidence and cheerful humility at the same time. How is that possible?
Cheerful confidence: I have genuine confidence that the thing I most need in my life—God's love and acceptance—is secure. Not because of what I've done, but because of what was done for me, planned for me before the foundations of the world (Ephesians 1).
Cheerful humility: I can walk into any situation without needing to prove myself. I can lose a debate. I can face hardship. I don't have to be impressive because I'm not trying to earn anything.
This is what it looks like to be human-sized—not playing God, not running away, but simply being human in the presence of God who is with me.
We must name three major distortions that exist within Christianity itself:
1. Prosperity Gospel – The lie that God's blessing equals financial wealth and health. If you're struggling, it's because your faith is weak.
2. Christian Nationalism – The confusion of the Kingdom of God with a political nation-state. It weaponizes faith for political gain.
3. Cultural Christianity – This one should scare church people most.
Cultural Christianity looks like normal, faithful Christianity—but it's hollow. You show up to church occasionally. You know how to play the part. You give the right answers:
But the real answer—the honest answer—is: "I'm completely overwhelmed. I don't have a strategy to address it. I'm drowning." We won't say that at church.
So we've just turned Christianity into another performative religion. We've got just enough Jesus to check the box—enough Christmas and Easter sermons, enough childhood memories of Christian camps—that we think, "Yeah, I'm good. I don't need any more."
Pastor Matt Chandler calls this being inoculated to the Gospel: you've had just enough Jesus that you think you're immune. You don't need a real relationship with Him.
But Matthew 7 is sobering. People will say to Jesus, "Lord, didn't we prophesy in your name? Didn't we cast out demons? Didn't we do great works?" And Jesus will say, "Depart from me. I never knew you." Not, "I'm disappointed in you." But, "I never knew you." Relationship, not résumé.
Paul writes:
The Gospel reveals a righteousness that is by faith from first to last. (Romans 1:16–17)
Why is faith the right response to a gift? Because faith is simply confidence in the giver.
If someone gives you a gift, the most annoying thing they can do is later Venmo you asking for payment. It undermines the entire spirit of the gift. If I give you a gift and you pay me back, you've just turned it into a transaction. The gift is only a gift when we don't try to pay for it.
The Gospel is God's gift. It cost Him everything—His own Son. When God looks at Jesus, He saw our sin. When He looks at us, He sees Jesus's righteousness. The exchange is complete.
Paul says: "Either your payment for it, or Jesus's payment for it. It is not a combination plan. Pick one."
The moment we try to pay—through good works, moral effort, religious performance—we're rejecting the gift. We're saying, "Thanks, but I'll earn my way instead."
After seven weeks of exploring different worldviews, here's the Gospel's answer to the question, What does it take to get right with God?
By grace alone—the undeserved favor of God. Not earned. Not deserved. A gift.
Through faith alone—trusting in what you can't see but can trust. Confidence in the Giver.
In Christ alone—not in your performance, your moral improvement, your religious achievements, or your effort. In Jesus, and what He finished on the cross.
It's finished. It was given, not earned. It can never be earned. You turn from your own way of life. You commit to following the way and the person of Jesus for the rest of your life. And you trust that that is enough.
The series ends with a hymn: "Jesus Paid It All."
All to him I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain. He washed it white as snow.
After seven weeks of saying the ledger is closed, why is "owe" still the right word?
There's a difference between being in debt and being in indebtedness.
Debt means you owe a payment. You're obligated to work off what you borrowed. Indebtedness means you're living in gratitude—you can never repay, so you live in thankfulness instead.
The Gospel posture is indebtedness, not debt. The work is already done. I'm not obeying so He'll do it; I'm obeying because He did it. I'm not trying to be good so He'll love me; I'm trying to be obedient because He loved me first.
Tim Keller says: "You are more desperate and wicked than you ever thought, and you are more loved and cared for than you could ever hope."
That's the beauty of the Gospel. Where is my obedience sitting? Am I an estranged child hoping the Father will notice me and turn His attention back? Or am I living as an already-adopted child, secure in His love, responding with gratitude?
Moving forward, we want to explore the way of Jesus—not just how to get saved, but how to live saved.
Many of us think spiritual life is a light switch: on or off. Either you're following Jesus or you're not. But that's not how it works. The truth is, you are living in obedience to some agenda right now. You just didn't consciously choose it.
Ephesians 5 says "the days are evil"—not morally evil necessarily, but harmful. There are countless agendas vying for your allegiance: social media algorithms, consumer culture, career ambition, comparison, performance metrics. If you don't actively choose something else, you're defaulting to these.
So the question is: Are you okay with the agendas you're currently obeying? If not, would you like to choose the way of Jesus instead?
Here's the promise: When you follow Jesus, you find peace. You find hope. You find joy. The things we think will bring us those—success, status, security—actually pile on more shame, more pressure, more guilt.
Jesus says: "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world" (John 16:33). And: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the fullest" (John 10:10).
That fullness? It's available today. Right now. Not after you've proven yourself. Not after you've climbed high enough. Now.
If you've spent your entire life trying to bribe God—religiously, morally, spiritually, or even as a Christian—here's what we invite you to do:
Say yes to Jesus.
Reject whatever religious ladder you've been climbing. Reject whatever system promised you eventual access to God. Set down your accomplishments, your résumé, your track record.
The thief on the cross next to Jesus had nothing to offer. When asked how he got to heaven, he said, "The guy in the middle cross said I could come." That's it. That's the Gospel.
Paul had the most impressive religious résumé anyone could imagine. In Philippians, he lists it all—his credentials, his achievements, his moral performance. Then he says: "But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord" (Philippians 3:7–8).
The ledger's closed. The work is finished. The invitation is open.
You don't have to bribe your way in. In Jesus, you are simply invited home.
