Finding Peace, Purpose, and Strength in Christ

I want to start by reminding you of something important: peace is not the absence of problems. It's about trusting God enough that even while your problems still exist, you can walk in the peace of God. What you look at determines what your life looks like.
If you focus on what you don't have—the emptiness, the lack of resources or relationships—you magnify those things. But if you look at Jesus, you magnify Him. He is the God of all peace.
Paul tells us in Philippians 4:6-7:
Don't be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition and with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The word "anxious" means to be troubled. We all have things in our lives that trouble us. But here's the secret: focus determines your reality. No matter what my life looks like, I need to look at Jesus.
Then Paul says something crucial in verse 8:
Finally, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Notice that word "finally" doesn't mean "lastly." It means "without end." This isn't something you do at the end of your troubles—it's something you do throughout your troubles, continually and without stopping.
This requires practice and commitment. You must actively and intentionally focus on what is right rather than what is wrong. When the devil throws something at you, respond with "Whatever." Focus on what is pure, what is praiseworthy, what is excellent. Find one thing in your life that is going well and give God praise for it.
Yes, there are frustrations. Yes, there are things that go wrong. But things are going to go wrong—this isn't heaven. So find the one good thing and focus there.
Paul shares his own testimony in Philippians 4:12-13:
I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I've learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether I'm well fed or hungry, whether I have a lot or I'm in want. I can do all this through Christ who gives me strength.
Notice he says he has learned contentment. It's not automatic—it must be taught and practiced. And here's the key: contentment is not based on how much you have. Paul had experienced both abundance and scarcity, and he discovered that contentment comes from trusting God, not from accumulating stuff.
Walking in God's promises works like a school. God gives you a promise—"I will meet all your needs." Then you go through a process of learning that promise, and there's always a test. Do you really trust God with this, or not? If you fail the test, you take it again.
You can't operate in God's promise unless you learn to trust Him and become content in every season.
Look at the Israelites. God promised to bring them from Egypt to the promised land. It should have taken 35 days. Instead, it took 40 years. Why? Because they didn't learn contentment. They didn't focus on what was lovely, praiseworthy, excellent, and pure. They focused on what they didn't have, and that lack of contentment delayed their promise.
When God gives you a promise and you're in a waiting season, it's not to punish you—it's to equip you. It's to prepare you, shape you, and mature you so you can be ready for the promise.
Remember: you're on a journey, and your story is still being written. Don't look at where you are now and assume that's the end of your story. God is not done. He still has another way, a better way. You just have to keep trusting Him until you figure out which way you're on—His way or your way.
Paul writes in Philippians 4:14-19:
Yet it is good of you to share in my troubles. Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out for Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving except you only... I have received full payment and I have more than enough. I am amply supplied. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.
Here's what's striking: God meets our needs when we are focused on meeting the needs of others.
It's not natural for us to think of others first. We naturally think of ourselves. I love myself. I think about myself all the time—even while I'm preaching, I'm thinking about me. We must learn to shift our focus outward.
Our needs are actually opportunities to help others meet their needs. When we recognize that our life is not just about us, but about serving others, that's when God shows up and meets our needs.
Here's a perspective shift: God meets our needs with seeds. Everything you have can be consumed for yourself—and that will meet your need for a moment. Or you can recognize that what you have are seeds to sow into others.
Think about it this way: You can count the seeds in an apple. But how many apples are in a seed? When you sow a seed, it multiplies beyond measure. A seed is simply potential. If you hold onto it, it never does anything. But the moment you sow it, it begins to grow.
Your time, your talents, your resources, your blessings—these are all seeds. When you sow them into other people's lives, God uses them to multiply and meet your needs in return.
1. Honor God with the First 10%
If you're not tithing, start somewhere. Maybe you're doing nothing—start at 1%. If you're doing 5%, move to 8%. Everything we own is really God's anyway. This is the principle of the tithe.
2. Serve Your Church
Don't just receive the benefits of a healthy church community. Be part of it. Sow your time and talents into serving. Many people make this church what it is by using their lives to sow seeds.
3. Be Jesus to Your Community
Here's a sobering statistic: 75% of people in your community don't go to church. And those who do attend church on average come only once every five weeks.
That means at least three out of every four people you encounter—at work, in sports, at school, in your neighborhood—they likely don't have a pastor or a Christian friend. God may have placed you in their life for exactly that reason.
Would you take the blessings God has given you and sow them into these people's lives? Be Jesus to them. Help meet their needs. Use what God has given you—whether you're in plenty or in want—to help others.
When we get our focus right, learn contentment, realize we're called to share, and sow seeds into other people—God meets our needs. That's what it means to trust Him.
My God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.
This is the meeting you don't want to miss.
