The book of James chapter 1, verses 14-15, outlines six stages in how sin develops. First, each person is tempted when they are dragged away by a thought or feeling. Like a bird allowed to rest in a nest, this thought festers in the mind.
Second, the person becomes enticed—hooked by a desire that wells up within them, much like a fish caught on a line. Third comes the stage where the sin is conceived: the person commits to it mentally and in their will. Fourth, the sin gives birth—it actually happens. The action is taken.
Fifth, the sin grows. One sin leads to another, multiplying in effect. Finally, sixth, it gives birth to death—the consequences and devastation that follow. The sin, as it were, produces destructive offspring.
This process is starkly illustrated in David's sin with Bathsheba, recorded in 2 Samuel 11-12. David should have been at war with his people, but he stays home. He goes to his palace roof and sees a woman bathing—and she is very beautiful. David is already at stage one.
But the sin doesn't stop there. He inquires about her (stage two: enticed). He sends messengers to bring her to him (stage three: conceived). He sleeps with her (stage four: sin gives birth). When Bathsheba becomes pregnant, David tries to cover his tracks by bringing her husband Uriah back, attempting to make him think the child is his own. But Uriah is a righteous man who refuses to sleep with his wife while his soldiers are at battle.
Instead of confessing, David's sin metastasizes. He places Uriah in the fiercest fighting and orders the commander to withdraw, ensuring Uriah's death in battle (stage five: sin grows). Stage six follows inevitably: the baby dies, and devastating consequences ripple through David's family and kingdom (stage six: gives birth to death).
Life presents us with two kinds of pain: the pain of resisting temptation, or the pain of suffering the consequences of giving in to it. David chose the latter—and it cost him dearly. His story teaches us to nip sin in the bud at stage one. Don't let that bird rest in the nest of your mind. Let it fly on.
Yet God's grace is remarkable. He sends the prophet Nathan to David. Nathan tells David a parable about a rich man with many flocks who takes the beloved lamb of a poor man to feed a guest—even though he has plenty of his own animals. David, drawn into the story, becomes outraged: "As surely as the Lord lives, the man who did this must die."
Then Nathan points directly at him: "You are the man."
After months of living with his secret, David hears those four words and is confronted with the reality of what he has done. In response, David does something extraordinary: he reaches for his harp and writes Psalm 51—a public record of his failure. He doesn't hide. He composes a song for the nation to hear, inviting them to learn from his wreckage.
In Psalm 51, David declares: "Against you, you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight." This might seem strange—David sinned against Bathsheba, against Uriah, against his nation. Yet when David comes before God, the harm he caused to others fades into the distance. He recognizes that first and foremost, he has offended a holy God.
David repeats the language of transgression throughout the psalm—my transgressions, my iniquity, my sin, eight times over. He's saying: "God, I've crossed the boundary. I've twisted what is right. I've missed the mark."
No one is exempt from the need to repent. David was a mature believer, the man who defeated Goliath, who led great military victories. Yet he still needed to repent. Martin Luther spoke of all of our life being repentance. Jesus himself taught us to pray daily: "Forgive us our sins." Repentance is not merely the doorway to the kingdom—it's the stepping stones of our Christian life until we meet him face to face.
Repentance begins with deep remorse and sorrow for our actions. David describes his bones being crushed, his spirit broken, his heart shattered. He's not upset because he was caught or because of the consequences to his leadership. He is deeply remorseful at what he has done in God's sight.
David could have made excuses. He was stressed, dealing with constant leadership challenges. Bathsheba bathed in public. Uriah was stubborn. He didn't personally kill Uriah—he merely gave orders. Kings in that era routinely took what they wanted. But David refuses these escape routes: "Against you, you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight."
Yet repentance is not hopeless despair. When David prays, "Cleanse me with hyssop and I will be clean. Wash me and I will be whiter than snow," he speaks with expectation and hope. He knows God sees his sin, and he trusts that God will act to lift him out of it. Repentance is full of hope.
The imagery of hyssop is profound. David's mind likely travels back to Egypt, where God commanded his people to take blood and apply it to their doorposts with hyssop—the very branch that applied the blood that saved them from death. David is reminding himself: my sin will be cleansed through sacrifice.
But there's something David couldn't see in that moment. In John 19:29, as Jesus hangs on the cross, a sponge soaked in sour wine is put on a branch of hyssop and held to his mouth. Hyssop appears again—but now it carries the blood of the new covenant. Jesus is the sacrifice that truly cleanses all who repent. The hyssop that once saved Israel from slavery now points to the one who saves all humanity from sin.
"Cleanse me with hyssop and I will be clean. Wash me and I will be whiter than snow." God promises to make David—and us—as if we had never sinned at all, to blot out our iniquity like wiping writing from a book.
Repentance is good for you. It cleanses us, purifies us from all unrighteousness, and restores us to right relationship with God. In our moments of failure and sin, we have the privilege of turning back—not with hopelessness, but with the certainty that God sees us, knows us, and will lift us out through the blood of Christ.
