We return to Ruth and Naomi as they settle in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest. After Naomi's bitter return in Chapter 1, hope begins to emerge. The narrator introduces Boaz, described as a "worthy man" and relative of Naomi's deceased husband Elimelech—a detail that plants seeds of anticipation for what God is orchestrating.
Ruth proposes to Naomi: "Let me go to the field and glean among the ears of grain." This wasn't desperation or theft—it was rooted in God's law. The Lord had commanded His people:
"When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge. Neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest... You shall leave them for the poor and the stranger." (Leviticus 19:9-10)
God also prescribed in Deuteronomy 24:19 that forgotten sheaves should be left for the widow, the fatherless, and the foreigner—that the Lord your God may bless you. This was not mere charity; it was covenantal provision woven into Israel's law and life.
Boaz honored this law faithfully, which reveals his character even before we meet him personally.
Verse 3 contains a remarkable statement: "She happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz." But is it coincidence? No—it is God's sovereignty at work.
The narrator has carefully positioned us to see God's hand:
When Boaz greets his workers, he says: "The Lord be with you," and they respond, "The Lord bless you." This exchange reveals the environment of faith Boaz has created among his household. His workers reflect his character—reverent, God-fearing, respectful.
When Boaz learns that Ruth is "the young Moabitete woman who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab," she is already the talk of the town. Yet Boaz sees beyond her foreign status and vulnerability.
Boaz approaches Ruth with remarkable generosity:
"Now listen, my daughter. Do not go to glean in another field, or leave this one, but keep close to my young women. Let your eyes be on the field that they are reaping, and go after them. Have I not charged the young men not to touch you? And when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink what the young men have drawn." (vv. 8-9)
He offers her protection—explicitly instructing his workers not to harm her. In the dark days of the Judges, when violence and assault threatened vulnerable women, this protection was literally life-saving.
When Ruth humbly asks why she has found such favor, Boaz responds:
"All that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband has been fully told to me, and how you left your father and mother and your native land, and came to a people that you did not know before. The Lord repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge." (vv. 11-12)
He recognizes her covenant loyalty to Naomi and her faith in seeking refuge under God's wings—the image of an eagle sheltering her young beneath protective wings during a storm.
Boaz seats Ruth at his table to eat with his own servants. He gives her roasted grain, and she eats until satisfied with food left over. Then he commands his young men:
"Let her glean even among the sheaves, and do not reproach her. Also pull out some of the bundles for her and leave it for her to glean, and do not rebuke her." (vv. 15-16)
By evening, Ruth had gleaned an ephah of barley—roughly forty pounds of grain, equivalent to half a month's wages in a single day. The Lord poured out abundance through Boaz's obedience.
When Ruth returns home with this abundance, Naomi's response marks a turning point. For the first time in the book, Naomi praises the Lord:
"Blessed be the man who took notice of you... The man is a close relative of ours, one of our redeemers." (vv. 19-20)
Boaz is a kinsman redeemer—a family member with the legal responsibility to buy back lost land, ransom relatives from bondage, marry a widow to perpetuate her deceased husband's line, and avenge wrongs. This foreshadows God's deeper redemptive work.
Naomi warns Ruth to stay with Boaz's workers for safety: "It is good, my daughter, that you go out with his young women, lest in another field you be assaulted" (v. 22).
Ruth remains faithful, gleaning through both the barley and wheat harvests—months of provision—living with her mother-in-law.
God in His providence and grace provides for those who seek refuge in Him, even when He appears to be silent.
At the end of Chapter 1, Ruth and Naomi lacked two critical things: protection and provision. By the end of Chapter 2, both have been sovereignly provided—not by God's direct intervention, but through the faithful obedience of a godly man.
God did not speak in this chapter, yet He was working. He works through the ordinary—through faithful people, through the law, through daily provision. Ruth and Naomi had only to seek refuge in Yahweh and trust His timing.
Ruth and Naomi did not rush ahead. Ruth worked faithfully through the entire harvest season. Boaz, though clearly a man of means and character, moved deliberately—not according to human urgency, but according to God's perfect plan.
When answers don't come on our schedule, we are called to the same faithful waiting. The Lord sees the zoomed-out picture of our lives. He has orchestrated every detail in His way, in His time, for His glory. Our refuge is secure under His wings, whether the answer comes tomorrow or after months of patient trust.
