A Biblical Teaching on the Sabbath

Pastor Dharius Daniels opens with a personal memory from childhood in the Mississippi Delta. He recalls playing old-school games like hide and seek and freeze tag with his cousins at his grandmother's house, before the age of widespread technology. When the children would become too rambunctious and rowdy, his grandmother would call out from another part of the house: "Y'all need to get somewhere and sit down."
At first, this phrase felt like restriction and correction. But with age, the pastor realized it was actually protection and care. His grandmother wasn't interrupting their fun—she was preserving their future. She knew that if they continued operating at that frantic pace, they would eventually hurt themselves, hurt each other, or break something valuable.
He said, "Sometimes that's the case at God's house. What my grandmother used to say to a house full of rambunctious children is what our heavenly father wants to say to a bunch of restless, overworked, overextended, taxied, and temperamental adults: Y'all need to get somewhere and sit down."
God commanded this principle through the institution of the Sabbath. The word "Sabbath" comes from the Hebrew word Shabbat, which means to stop, to cease, to pause. This is not primarily about a specific day—it's about a discipline.
In the creation narrative, God demonstrates this principle in his own work:
He creates, he evaluates, and then moves on to the next day. He does that for six days. And on the seventh day, the Bible says he rested.
God rests not because he is tired—God doesn't get tired. He rests as a response to accomplishment. He models for us that we cannot allow our obsession for the work that hasn't been done to cause us to ignore the work that has been done.
The pastor introduces what he calls "the principle of the pause." Strategic pauses are not obstacles to productivity; they are the pathway to productivity. The inability to pause isn't always determination—sometimes it's dysfunction masquerading as drive. It's fear wearing the mask of faith. It's unhealed wounds showing up as the inability to rest.
God built this principle into the rhythm of creation because the only way for us to be human as he intended is if we understand the work-rest rhythm.
This principle was so essential to human flourishing that it became the fourth commandment:
"Remember the Sabbath by keeping it holy."
We treat nine of the Ten Commandments as commands, but somehow we treat this one as a suggestion.
God gave this commandment to Israel as they came out of Egypt. The Israelites had known only one way of life: oppression under Pharaoh, who forced them to work incessantly—even making bricks without straw. God recognized a critical truth: "They've come out of Egypt, but some of the ways of Egypt are not out of them."
God had to detox them from a way of thinking that ties their worth to their work. The same applies to us today. We live in an era where many derive their value from three sources:
The pastor challenges: "They like you. Now what? Does that make sense?"
When our sense of self is tied to these three things, it leads to a violation of the work-rest rhythm—which we glamorize in culture by calling it "hustle and grind" and sanitize in church by calling it "faithfulness and commitment."
Although this violation of work-rest rhythm may lead to accomplishment, achievement, and acquisition, it comes with an expense: reaching our goals while destroying our souls.
Disobeying the Sabbath doesn't mean you'll be stuck in life, but it does mean your soul eventually gets sick—what Dr. John Mark Comer calls "hurry sickness." The symptoms include:
"The you that God's calling you to be is a you that can't come into being when you're overextended, over-taxed, worn out and worn down."
Jesus himself asks the penetrating question:
"What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?"
The Sabbath is a visible declaration: "God, I believe you can do in six days for me what it takes others seven to do."
Mark chapter 2 presents Jesus in escalating tension with the religious authorities. The chapter reveals a pattern:
This escalation reveals a sobering truth: Your spiritual health is largely determined by how you handle spiritual bullies.
Spiritual bullies are unaware of their own pride. They overestimate their own prudence and project their personal convictions as universal standards for everyone else. They confuse areas where scripture gives space and latitude for personal conviction, turning their personal convictions into universal laws.
"Sometimes your personal convictions are not even an indication of spiritual strength. They are the way you are managing unbridled weaknesses."
The conflict in Mark 2 was never actually about the day—it was about the discipline. God picked a specific day (Saturday) to schedule the discipline into the rhythm of life. In the Old Covenant, it was a day. In the New Covenant, it's a discipline: work-rest rhythm.
All the critiques about Jesus violating the Sabbath had to do with work, not worship. When he healed the paralyzed man and told him, "Take up your bed and walk," they said it was unlawful on the Sabbath—because healing and carrying were considered work.
People argue about which day to worship when the principle of the Sabbath is about rest—replenishment, recovery, optimization.
Paul clarifies this in Colossians:
"Let no one judge you by what you eat or drink or with regard to a religious festival, a new moon, a celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come. The reality is found in Christ."
As New Testament believers, we gather on Sunday—not because it's a Sabbath, but because the founder of our faith engaged in the activity that is the anchor of our faith on early Sunday morning. We worship on the day he rose. For many, Sunday becomes our Sabbath as we replenish our souls and rest in his goodness.
Jesus's response to the Pharisees cuts to the core:
"The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even over the Sabbath."
Jesus is declaring: "I determine what the Sabbath means. You don't. This is my idea." He implemented this principle because it is the only way we can be human as he intended.
In the Old Testament, violating the Sabbath required a season of ostracism—you became a toxic presence to the community if you never refueled yourself.
"The empty you is not the best you."
God gave us the work-rest rhythm for four essential purposes:
1. Reflection
There are certain things we cannot see until we stop. Rest creates space for clarity.
2. Reestablishment
The Sabbath reestablishes in our mind: "God, you're my source." It realigns priorities so that our lives are aligned with the things God cares about, not just the things we care about.
3. Realignment
The pastor distinguishes between idolatry and the sin of transposition. Idolatry is putting something where God belongs. The sin of transposition is not putting something where God says to put it—putting it in the wrong place in your priorities, not necessarily in God's place.
Realignment allows us to see: "I've got some stuff out of whack here. I'm not stewarding my temple well. I'm giving more attention to dysfunctional things than to the people who are truly down for me."
4. Restoration
The Bible says, "He restores my soul." One of the ways God does this is through Sabbath. This isn't just physical recovery—it's emotional restoration. It's getting back what hustle stole.
"God gives you in his presence what you've actually been looking for in your performance and productivity."
What we're actually looking for in work is security—the assurance that we'll be all right. What we're looking for is significance—evidence that our work matters and that we're making a difference. God says, "I'm going to give you both of those in me."
The goal isn't to stop being productive. The Bible speaks against laziness. But we should produce to be generative and to serve others, not to prove our worth.
The pastor emphasizes a critical distinction:
Many people have rooms in their homes they never enjoy. When Solomon talks about enjoying the fruit of your labor, that's a replenishment discipline. But so many of us are still oriented by Pharaoh's way of thinking: guilt and rest are synonymous. We feel guilty when we're not producing.
"Don't let yourself go from Egypt to a second way church that celebrates your self-destructive behavior and calls it service."
The pastor shifts to a deeper truth about purpose and calling. When we have purpose conversations, we talk about activity—what someone does. But we overlook example—how they live.
"There's a group of people you've been called to reach that will never be impressed by what you do."
What impresses and influences people is not always what you accomplish with a microphone. It's how you respond to criticism, the joy you carry, and your healthy detachment from your own accomplishments. That's what draws people—when they see someone who is rich with God and therefore rich with everybody.
Purpose includes the example you set, the joy you walk in, and the peace you demonstrate.
The pastor offers a guided prayer as benediction, addressing the core lies many have believed:
"We've been running, working, striving, and somewhere along the way, we started believing the lie that our worth was tied to our work. So today, we stop. We pause. We sit down.
"I recognize that I've allowed the issues of life and my own ambition to push me to live at a pace that has not only blocked your best for me, it has stalled who you're calling me to be. And I confess it. I'm weary. I'm worn. And I've tied my work and my worth together, and I repent.
"So today I ask that you would restore what hurry has stolen. Realign my priorities. Return me to a place of pure motives. Renew my strength. Settle the restlessness in me that will not allow me to slow down and sit with you. Teach me to value who I'm becoming more than what I'm doing. Help me to trust that your timing is always your kindness.
"And in a world that is constantly challenging me to speed up, give me the courage to slow down in Jesus' name."
The sermon closes with the central command:
"Get somewhere and sit down."
This isn't laziness or avoidance. It's obedience to God's design for human flourishing. It's the recovery of your soul. It's the realignment of your life around what truly matters. It's the restoration of what hurry has stolen.
