We're continuing our summer series through the Psalms, building on last week's discussion of lament. Last week we talked about singing our sorrows—giving voice to our pain through lament. This week, we're exploring something different: singing in the silence. What do we do when God is silent? How do we worship when we can't see our way forward?
Many of us have experienced seasons where God feels distant. We might intellectually know He's close, but emotionally it feels like He's far away. Paul reminds us that God is never far from any of us—He's as close as the air we breathe. Even when circumstances make Him feel distant, even when we feel like we've failed, God is not far from any of us.
If you're a believer, He doesn't just dwell near you—He dwells in you. He promised never to leave us or forsake us. But there are real seasons in life where we feel His silence, even as we know He's present.
One of the most important things to understand about processing emotion with God: your emotional healing is not instantaneous. You didn't arrive at where you are in a day, and you won't unwind everything in a day either.
Yes, God can heal you miraculously in a moment. He can transform you instantly. But you'll still spend the rest of your life processing what He did. When someone dies, when something good happens, when you get promoted or fired—all of these require processing. God wants you to be emotionally healthy, not just physically or spiritually healthy.
This is why the Psalms gives us 150 of them. We're emotional creatures with a wide range of experiences, and processing takes time. Think crockpot, not microwave.
Psalm 42 shows us the rhythm of how we process with God in silence. There are four movements:
"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God." (Psalm 42:1–2)
When we read this poetically, we might think of passion—a beautiful desire for God. But the psalmist isn't speaking of passion; he's describing desperation. The deer isn't panting because it enjoys a nice run. It's exhausted, hunted, running for its life. There's nowhere to turn. This is survival language, not devotional language.
The writer isn't just thirsty for an experience with God. He's thirsty for intervention. He needs God to move. He needs God to answer. "If I ever needed you, God, I need you right now."
But here's what we often miss: your longing is evidence, not failure. When you long for God, it means the Spirit of God is working in you. God is wooing your heart. No one truly seeks after God on their own—the fact that you're longing means God hasn't abandoned you. It means you haven't drifted. It means God is active on your behalf.
So take heart: The fact that you're longing means God is with you. The fact that you're longing means you have a future. The fact that you're longing means God will answer.
"These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Almighty, with shouts of joy and praise." (Psalm 42:4)
In the Old Testament, God's people would build stone altars and landmarks so that when they passed by again, they would remember: "Oh, I remember when God healed me. I remember when God provided. I remember when God made a way where there was no way."
When God goes silent, we must rehearse our memory. We must recall how God has shown up in our lives. Not once or twice, but over and over.
Here's the problem: the enemy feeds us amnesia. How many times have you prayed for God to provide when He's already provided thousands of times in your life? He's kept a roof over your head for decades. He's sustained you through crisis after crisis. And then tomorrow comes, and you panic: "This time is different!" No, it's not. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Faith remembers before it receives. (Hebrews 11:1)
Faith is the substance of things hoped for—past tense. We have hoped for something in the past, it materialized, and now that materialization is the evidence of our faith. I know God is true because He said this, and here it is. He promised that, and He delivered.
So when silence comes, we must move into memory. We rehearse what God has done. We fight amnesia with remembrance.
"My soul is downcast within me. Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God." (Psalm 42:5–6)
This is the turning point. The psalmist has longed. He's remembered God's faithfulness. Now he talks to himself. He preaches to his own soul.
Listen: your soul is always listening. It's absorbing something every moment. Anxiety preaches to your soul. Fear preaches. Social media preaches. Shame preaches. Culture preaches. The question isn't whether you're listening—it's what are you listening to?
When the world gets so loud it's almost deafening, and God is silent but the noise is thunderous, we have to put our foot down and preach truth to ourselves.
Why are you so downcast? Why are you disturbed? God has been faithful. He healed you in the past. He'll heal you tomorrow. He's going to show up for your family. He's going to do good things. Even if He doesn't fulfill a promise through my life, He'll fulfill it through my children. God's faithful to His covenant.
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones said it this way: "Most of your unhappiness comes from listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself." You're listening to your anxiety, your fear, your flesh. But you need to talk to yourself instead. David encouraged himself in the Lord. He spoke truth instead of surrendering to his feelings.
Don't let your feelings interpret God's faithfulness. In times of silence, you must be the one speaking truth to your soul.
"I will yet praise you." (Psalm 42:5)
That word "yet" is everything. It's not "I might praise you someday if things get better." It's "I will praise you again."
Hope is the anchor that holds us. And here's something crucial about worship in the dark:
Worship isn't always an overflow. We've been taught that worship flows from a heart full of affection for God—and that's true sometimes. But sometimes, worship isn't an overflow; it's a refill. Sometimes you come to the house of God running on empty. Your hope tank is depleted. And as you worship—as you sing, as you praise—your tank gets refilled.
When you worship, your problems get small. Your God gets big. Things shift. You came in weighed down by stress, by problems, by the world's demands. Then you start singing. You put your phone down. You join in with the worship team. And suddenly, something reorders in your heart. God becomes bigger. Your problems become smaller.
Worship reorders your heart. It shifts things. This is why worship in the dark matters.
You're not alone in this. Jesus Himself entered the silence on your behalf.
Between the Old and New Testaments, there's a 400-year silence. No prophets spoke. No word from God came. Israel had always had God speaking through prophets. They had always heard His voice directing them, correcting them, leading them. Then God went silent. For 400 years.
But after the darkest silence in history, the greatest light ever came—Jesus.
On the cross, Jesus entered the ultimate silence. He cried out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" For the first time in His eternal existence, He was separated from the Father. God made Him to be sin so that we could have forever fellowship with the Father.
He went into the silence so you could have forever fellowship.
As we close, I want to leave you with one word: Yet.
Maybe you don't know where God is right now. Maybe you can't see what He's doing. This morning, may you be released to say: "Yet I will praise Him."
Here's a truth that has anchored me in my darkest seasons: Christ's sacrifice is greater than my sin. The second Adam's sacrifice overshadows the first Adam's mistake. If one person's sin was powerful enough to separate all humanity from righteousness, how much more does the gift of righteousness in Christ grant you access to God's kingdom?
Yet again, you will worship God. Your best days are ahead. And some of you might think, "What if I die?" Paul said, "To live is Christ, to die is gain." Death cannot take away what God wants to do in your life.
May you know that God sees you right where you are—in whatever darkness, whatever silence, whatever struggle you're facing. He sees you. And He's faithful.
