Love Without Commitment: A World in Crisis

We live in a strange moment. People want love more than ever, but seem less interested in actually pursuing it—marriage, dating, real commitment. It used to be, who am I going to marry? Now it's, do I even want to let another human being know my address?

Look at the statistics. In 1949, 79% of American households contained a married couple. Today, it's 47%. That's a massive swing. Fewer people are staying in love, and fewer people are finding love. We're seeing a dating recession, a birth rate decline, and Valentine's Day has practically become singles awareness day.

It's not just romantic love, either. Togetherness in general is at an all-time low—family, friendships, all of it. We're living in a loneliness epidemic. We're more comfortable with followers than friends. We have all the contacts in the world but not the connection to go with it. We even live in an age where machines meet our relational needs better than people do.

The Neuroscience of Falling in Love

As Hollywood lost interest in writing new love stories, neuroscientists were discovering something fascinating about love itself. Harvard professor Arthur Brooks breaks the science of falling in love into three steps:

1. Attraction — driven by testosterone and estrogen. This is the part of the journey where you're convinced someone is God's will for your life... mostly because they're attractive. It might be the Holy Spirit, but it's definitely hormones.
2. Infatuation — a chemical cocktail of dopamine and norepinephrine. Dopamine creates the euphoria of romance; you can literally become addicted to the honeymoon phase because it functions in your brain like a drug. Norepinephrine is adrenaline—the butterflies, the nervous energy, the reason you check your phone every five seconds. You are, chemically speaking, a little delusional. You stop seeing the ick and start seeing endearing quirks.
3. Attachment — this is where oxytocin helps build friendship slowly, over time.

And there's the problem: slowly, over time. Even though God's design for love is mostly about step three—long-term attachment—fewer and fewer people ever get there, because it doesn't feel like love in the moment. We want the short-term rush of attraction and infatuation far more than we want the long, slow work of attachment.

Oxytocin tomorrow cannot compete with dopamine today.

When love becomes just another dopamine chase, it becomes an addiction like any other—and like all addictions, it needs more and more to satisfy it. Another fling, another swipe, more drama, more stimulation.

Conform or Be Transformed

Romans 12:1-2 says:

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.

When it comes to love, sex, and relationships, you will either conform to the world's patterns or be transformed by God to see that His way is better. The world has its own glossy brochures—secularism claiming we've outsmarted religion, New Age spirituality promising fulfillment through self-discovery, and a brochure for your love life insisting God's way is archaic and outdated.

But the results are in. Divorce rates have never been higher. Happiness has never been lower. We're living in a new kind of poverty—not of money, but of purpose, meaning, connection, and love.
