We live in a world obsessed with being seen. Long before Instagram, TikTok, or followers and likes, Jesus understood that we all have a deep desire to be noticed. Today, we perform our lives constantly—carefully curating what we share, managing everyone's perception of us, trying to look happy, successful, spiritual, and put-together.
But here's what's happening: somewhere along the way, we stopped living life and started performing life. We do things not because we want to do them, but because we want people to know we did them. The sunset becomes secondary to getting the perfect picture. Dinner gets cold while we stage the shot. And we're exhausted because we're constantly managing what everyone thinks about us.
Jesus challenges us with a simple but piercing question: If nobody ever knew you did it, would you still do it?
If nobody applauded, if nobody liked the post, if nobody thanked you or gave you credit—if nobody ever knew—would you still do it? This question reveals who we're really living for. It exposes our true audience.
Every single one of us has an audience we're tempted to live for. It could be our family, friends, coworkers, or that person we're trying to impress. It could be complete strangers on the internet. But Jesus calls us to live for an audience of one—God alone.
In Matthew 6:1-4, Jesus addresses this head-on:
Watch out. Don't do your good deeds publicly to be admired by others. For you will lose the reward from your father in heaven. When you give to someone in need, don't do as hypocrites do, blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity. I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get.
Jesus paints a humorous picture: imagine having Timmy Trumpet follow you around, playing your walk-in music every time you did something good. Every act of service, every donation, every good deed—cue the trumpet! It sounds fun until you realize how ridiculous and exhausting it would be.
But that's exactly what we do. We announce our generosity. We mention our service. We work it into conversations. We post about it. We make sure everyone knows.
Jesus isn't saying, "Don't do good things." Helping others is good. But the action is fine; the motive behind it matters even more. We can do all the right things for all the wrong reasons.
We can be generous to help people, or generous to be recognized. We can serve someone out of love, or serve them to get a pat on the back. We can help others to help them, or help them because we want to be liked. The action can be good while the motive is unhealthy.
That's why Jesus starts with urgency: "Watch out. Don't let your heart drift here." This doesn't happen overnight. It's subtle. It's sneaky. It's a slow creep into our lives until we're doing things because we need to be noticed.
A brilliant author once shared a practice: when he realizes he's bragging or performing in a conversation, he'll just clap his hands together once—a reset. It's his way of saying, "Stop. Stop performing. Just be you."
Maybe we need that practice in our own lives. When you're about to post something looking for validation—delete it. When you're telling a story trying to impress somebody—realize it and reset. When you're doing something only to make sure everyone knows—stop and ask yourself: If nobody knew, would I still do it?
The danger isn't being seen. The danger is needing to be seen. Once our motives drift, we start chasing something that was never meant to fuel our lives.
We give awards for everything now. Employee of the month. Best dressed. Best smile. We're so focused on recognition that we've started believing applause was supposed to fuel our lives.
But here's the problem with applause: it never lasts. A compliment feels good for ten minutes. A promotion feels great, but weeks later you want the next one. A viral post is incredible, but then you need the next post to go viral or you feel like a failure.
Applause is addictive. Once people become your reward, you always need more. And that becomes exhausting because now your joy depends on other people's opinion. Your confidence depends on what they think. Your worth and happiness depend on their approval.
Jesus says of those chasing applause:
They have received all the reward they will ever get.
That's it. They got their applause, their recognition, their compliments—and that's all they'll ever get. Is that really enough?
People were never meant to fuel our lives. Only God's approval matters. Applause is a terrible fuel source because it won't sustain you. It fades. It disappears. But you'll spend your whole life chasing something that will never satisfy you.
Some of us feel so tired right now because we're carrying this burden of keeping everybody happy. Every single day: wake up, perform. Wake up, manage perceptions. Wake up, try to impress everybody. But Jesus says something incredibly freeing: You can stop.
There's already someone who sees you. God sees you. And His reward is all you need—and you won't exhaust yourself trying to earn it because you already have it.
Jesus concludes with the most freeing truth:
When you give to someone in need, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in private, and your father who sees everything will reward you.
Your heavenly Father sees everything. Not just the big things. Not just the impressive things everyone will applaud. Everything.
Sometimes we underestimate how life-changing this truth can be. We're exhausted trying to be enough, trying to prove ourselves, trying to earn approval, stuck on a neverending hamster wheel. But Jesus says: You can stop. Your heavenly Father already sees you.
One of the most beautiful stories in Scripture illustrates this. A widow walked into the temple with just two small coins. Wealthy people were giving large gifts publicly, in showy ways—holding them up for everyone to see. But this widow had nothing to showcase. No spotlight. No gathering crowd. Nobody was impressed. Nobody even noticed her.
For a moment, she might have thought: Why even bother? Nobody will notice. What difference does this make?
But Jesus noticed her. Out of everyone there, Jesus saw her. He stopped. He pointed her out. He celebrated her because she gave all that she had.
And here's what's remarkable: 2,000 years later, we don't know the names of the wealthy people who gave. We don't know the size of their gifts. They're not the main characters in the story. We don't even talk about them.
But we still talk about the widow with two coins. Because Jesus noticed her. Because Jesus saw her. He pointed out her faithfulness, her obedience, her quiet generosity. She wasn't giving for people's applause. She was giving what she had to God.
That's the freedom Jesus invites us into: stop performing, stop trying to impress everybody, stop waiting until you have something big enough to showcase. Instead, faithfully do the little things God puts in front of you.
God sees what the world overlooks. He sees the unseen sacrifices you're making. He sees the prayers you feel are going unnoticed. He sees the hidden generosity. He sees the private obedience. He sees the faithful moments nobody is applauding for.
They may never be posted. They may never be recognized. No one may ever clap. But they will always be seen by God.
When you know God sees you, you stop needing everybody else to. When you have that confidence in your heavenly Father, you don't need anyone else's approval.
