Welcome to our new series, Be F.I.T. — a fresh take on faithfulness, investment, and trustworthiness. This year our theme is flourishing and thriving, and for the next six weeks we're going to explore what it means to be F.I.T. in every area of life, starting with your work.
F stands for Faithful—because one day you will stand before God and hear, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
I stands for Invested—not just spectating, but actively participating in the life of the church and community.
T stands for Trustworthy—being authentic, reliable, and a person of integrity who can be held accountable.
This is not about earning salvation; it's about living out the salvation you've already received in Christ.
Many of us go to work with a bad attitude, thinking it's just something we have to do. But the truth is profound: your work is a gift from God.
"May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us, and may he establish the work of our hands for us." (Psalm 90:17)
When God establishes the work of our hands, it means our work has purpose, is fruitful, and carries an eternal element.
Deuteronomy 8:17-18 reminds us:
"You may say to yourself, 'It is my power and the strength of my hands that have produced this wealth for me.' But remember—don't ever forget—it's the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce."
Before sin ever entered the world, God gave Adam a job. In Genesis 2:15, the Lord placed Adam in the Garden of Eden "to work it and take care of it." Work is not a curse; it's a calling.
God has woven into you unique skills, gifts, and talents suited to particular work. He's blessed you with a sound body and mind, placed you in a great nation and city. Your job exists because God placed you there.
Whether you're a builder or maker (carpenter, electrician, engineer, farmer), a caregiver (doctor, nurse, teacher, firefighter, pastor), a business leader (CEO, entrepreneur, manager), a creator or communicator (writer, musician, filmmaker, content creator), or a server or supporter (chef, janitor, retail worker, delivery driver)—your work matters.
The greatest job of all? Being a homebuilder—raising children. The second greatest? Being a grandfather.
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord, not for man." (Colossians 3:23)
Imagine walking into work Monday morning and deciding: "I'm going to serve everyone here as though I'm serving Jesus."
What would change?
You would excel with great enthusiasm. You wouldn't show up late. You wouldn't be lazy or take shortcuts. Your attitude, effort, and output would transform. If you're in sales, you'd make extra calls and be extra kind. If you're a nurse or doctor, your patients would receive exceptional care. If you're a musician, you'd create songs that honor Christ. Even with difficult customers, you'd give your very best.
Your boss would notice. "I see something different in you." And they would connect that excellence to the God you serve.
"So that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in this crooked and depraved generation in which you shine like the stars of the universe." (Philippians 2:15)
You would always do more than expected. Jesus taught us to go the extra mile. Of all the people at your workplace, shouldn't the Christian be the one doing more work, giving more effort, displaying a better attitude?
Consider Rebekah's story from Genesis 24. Abraham's servant traveled to find a wife for Isaac. He prayed, "May the girl who offers me water and waters my camels be the one You've chosen."
A camel drinks 20-30 gallons of water. With ten camels, that's nearly 300 gallons. One young woman, one jar. She went back and forth from the well to the trough, drawing water until all ten camels were satisfied.
He asked for a drink. She gave him a drink and went the extra mile for his entire caravan. Because of her faithfulness and generosity, Rebekah married Isaac and became an ancestor of Jesus Christ.
That's how we should live our lives—doing complete jobs, going the extra mile, serving with excellence.
Don't be lazy. Don't be apathetic. Don't be dishonest. If you're not serving people at work as you would serve Jesus, don't even tell them you're a Christian.
God has placed you in your workplace for a reason. Your office, cubicle, retail space, or workstation is where you bring the light and love of Jesus Christ.
Pray before work: "Lord, help me serve these people as though I'm serving You. Open doors for me to share my faith. Help me to be faithful, invested, and trustworthy. Show me what You want to do through me today."
Then watch what God does.
God uses ordinary people. In 1 Corinthians 1:26, Paul writes:
"Not many of you were wise by human standards. Not many of you were of noble birth."
We're all ordinary. But the moment you become a Christian, God puts His extraordinary presence—the Holy Spirit—inside your ordinary body.
"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit?" (1 Corinthians 6:19)
Don't divide the secular from the sacred. Many of us think: "The week belongs to my boss. The weekend belongs to me—or to God." No. You are a Christian on Monday through Saturday just as much as on Sunday. Wherever God's Spirit lives, the sacred enters that space.
"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:16)
Your co-workers probably aren't reading the Bible this weekend. They may never come to church. But on Monday, they're watching you like a hawk, noticing every detail. Let your light shine. Be faithful, invested, and trustworthy. Let them see Jesus in you.
Here's your assignment:
Pray for your co-workers. Ask them, "Is there anything I can pray about for you?"
Find a way to bless them. Bring coffee, donuts, or gift certificates. Go the extra mile without being asked.
Go the extra mile. Water the ten camels. Do more than your job description requires.
If you own a business, find a way to honor God through your company. In-N-Out puts Bible verses on their cups. Interstate Batteries has a mission to glorify God and funds Christian films. Tyson Foods employs 100 chaplains to care for their workers.
One Friday, I met the owner of a bike shop—a non-Christian. I simply introduced myself and shared my vision for using business to point people toward Christ. He was so moved that he came to church the next day. He's now putting up a card in his shop to direct customers to our church—and he doesn't even attend yet.
Imagine the influence we could have if every believer understood that their workplace is sacred ground when the Holy Spirit dwells within them.
As we close, let's pray. Many of us fall into the trap of thinking, "I'm just paying bills and putting food on the table." Work becomes drudgery. But God created you with specific gifts and opened a door for you to work in a particular place.
Lord, help us flourish and thrive this year. Make us faithful day in and day out, not giving You half our hearts but all of them. Help us to be invested—to let our light shine and be people of integrity and character. Help us this week to bless our co-workers in tangible ways, to pray for them, and to serve them as we would serve You.
We pray especially for those facing hardship, that You would bring miracles and healing. And as we've been blessed by faithful servants in our midst, help us to be faithful in return.
God, lead the salt out of the salt shaker into the business world around us. As we walk into our workplaces as living temples of Your Holy Spirit, let us spread the light and love of Jesus Christ everywhere we go.
