Welcome to our passage in James chapter 5, verses 1 through 12. Patience is a fruit of the Spirit, yet most of us struggle with waiting. We experience impatience in small, everyday frustrations—choosing the wrong line at the gas station or the wrong lane on the highway. But James addresses far deeper questions: What do we do when waiting for God to make things right? What about when the wicked prosper, the righteous suffer, and injustice goes unanswered?
James reminds us that our hope is not found in immediate vindication, but in the certainty of the coming of the Lord. Jesus is coming as judge for the wicked and redeemer for the suffering. He is king over all his people.
James uses eschatological language—the language of future judgment—to speak to the wealthy oppressors who have defrauded and abused believers. He writes, "Your riches have rotted. Your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have corroded."
Notice the perfect tense: these events have "already happened" in James's mind, even though the oppressors still possess their wealth. Why? Because the future judgment is as secure as if it had already occurred. You can bank on it.
Gold does not naturally corrode or rust. Yet James says their gold is corroded because he uses apocalyptic language to communicate this truth: That which you think is indestructible will not endure the judgment of Christ. Your power, influence, and money—all of it will vanish.
In verse 4, James writes: "The wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you."
This language echoes the Exodus. When God heard the cries of enslaved Israel under Egyptian oppression, He came down to rescue them. James invokes this same imagery: The labor you exploited, the abuse you committed—God has a record of it. Not one injustice has been forgotten.
The oppressors think they control the system and can silence everything. But God hears what injustice tries to silence. He is the "Lord of hosts"—Yahweh Sabaoth—the Lord of armies, the God who parted the sea to free His afflicted people.
This title first appears in 1 Samuel when Hannah, a suffering and mocked woman, prays: "O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant... then I will give him to the Lord." Hannah's prayer was answered with Samuel, the prophet. David later used this same language when facing Goliath: "I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel."
James tells the abusers: The Lord of hosts—the Lord of armies—is coming.
Before James calls believers to "be patient," he first establishes the theological framework. He lets them overhear the verdict from the Judge. This order matters.
If someone came to you in the middle of your pain and immediately said, "Just be patient," it would feel like dismissal—like "learn to live with it." But James does something else. He comforts first by declaring that God sees the evil, that He is coming, and that He will make it right.
These believers had only the Old Testament. They didn't have Revelation or 1 Thessalonians. Yet James assures them: Jesus is coming back. Jesus, who reigns, is coming back to judge the evil committed against you and to comfort you. The judge of the abuser is also the redeemer of the abused.
James uses the farmer as an illustration of patience. The farmer cannot make it rain. The farmer has zero control over the weather. But the farmer can prepare the field. The farmer can cultivate. The winter is long, but the farmer knows spring is coming.
This is not resignation or pretending injustice didn't happen. The God you are trusting is the one who just declared that injustice does matter, that He saw it, and that He is coming.
You cannot call down the rain, but you can keep farming.
You're not asked to do nothing or feel nothing. You're asked to keep doing what God has given you to do, trusting and waiting on Him. You cannot command the rain, but you can keep tending the field.
The tears you thought no one saw—when you cried in your bedroom, desperate and in pain—the Lord saw them. He heard your cries. And He's coming to judge evil and make it right.
The waiting is temporary. But His relief is permanent. The Lord will make it right—completely, perfectly right. You don't have to carry the burden of making right every wrong. There is a King who is also a Judge, both just and compassionate. He has entered the courtroom.
The pain is awful and hard, and sometimes you suffer in silence. But know this: God sees it. And the pain, as awful as it is, cannot be compared with the glory you will receive in Christ Jesus.
James mentions Job as an example of patience and suffering. Job wasn't a stoic philosopher calmly accepting everything. He cried out. He threw dust and ashes. He spoke words he later regretted. He was full of emotions. That's fine. We all have emotions. But Job waited and trusted the Lord despite his anguish.
After comforting believers with the promise of Christ's return, James issues a warning. He tells them: "Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged."
Why this warning? Because delayed justice can make believers suspicious, cranky, cynical, and divisive. When people are under financial pressure, physical abuse, or cultural persecution—and they cannot strike back at their powerful oppressor—the temptation is to strike at those beside them.
They lash out at their spouse, children, friends, and fellow church members. The oppressor is too powerful to confront, so they use a coping mechanism: unleashing anger on those around them.
James illustrates this with the image of entering battle. You're fighting the enemy on one side, but then you start shooting into the barricades—hitting those fighting alongside you.
A supervisor commits fraud and injustice against you. The whole system seems stacked against you. You come to church, someone in your small group says something, and you lash out at them—though they had nothing to do with your suffering. "Do not grumble against one another," James says. "The judge is standing at the door."
A heart strengthened by the coming of the Lord does not need to manipulate with words.
External pressures create internal friction. Do not take your frustration out on the people standing next to you in the trenches. In your suffering, do not sin. Especially avoid turning your pain against those beside you who are trying to help.
If you recognize yourself in these verses—not as one who suffered, but as one who caused suffering—know this: The judge is at the door. That is sobering news for the unrepentant.
But here is the goodness of the Gospel. The Judge already came once. When He came the first time, He did not come to condemn sin, but to save sinners. John 3:17 says: "He was not sent into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world."
The one coming as judge is the same one who went to the cross to bear the judgment our sin deserves.
Do not run from Him—run to Him. Today, the door of grace remains open. Christ will receive anyone who comes to Him in repentance and faith. He came to seek and save the lost. Your sin is awful, but His grace is beautiful. There is hope for you.
To those who have waited, who have wondered whether God sees—look to the cross. The cross is God's declaration that He sees, that He knows, and that He cares.
Jesus entered our suffering, endured injustice Himself, and rose again victorious. If you wonder if God loves you, look to the cross. He loves you so much that He sent His Son to die for you.
Jesus suffered for us. Jesus is coming back again. Jesus will make it right. Jesus will wipe your tears. Jesus will give you comfort, grace, and love.
Wait and trust in Jesus. He's coming again.
We wait—not with despair, not with bitterness, not with grumbling. We wait as people who have seen the cross and who know how the story ends.
The judge is at the door. For those who reject Him, that is a warning. For those who trust Him, that is wonderful news.
Trust the Lord. Wait for Him. Be patient. He loves you. Jesus is good. Jesus is powerful. And Jesus will make it right once and for all.
