Joshua 14 | A Life of Complete Loyalty to God
When we think of spies, we often imagine characters like James Bond—intelligent, well-trained, and capable of both espionage and combat. Today, I want to explore how Caleb embodied this same combination: a spy who was also a warrior. But more importantly, Caleb's story teaches us about complete loyalty to God and the blessings that follow.
Caleb's identity is particularly significant. He is consistently identified as "Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite." This detail matters because the Kenizzites were not originally Israelites. Caleb was an immigrant—someone whose ancestors were not descendants of Jacob.
When Abraham received God's promise of land, it included the territory of the Kenizzites. Yet somehow, Caleb's family became incorporated into Israel. Perhaps they migrated to Egypt alongside the Israelites, or perhaps Caleb himself merged with Israel during the slavery period. In any case, he was part of the "mixed crowd" that left Egypt—not a pure-blooded descendant of Jacob, but an immigrant who became a member of God's people.
What's remarkable is that despite his outsider status, Caleb became a leader among the tribe of Judah. He rose to prominence in a majority culture that wasn't originally his own. This required exceptional character, dedication, and hard work.
Caleb was one of twelve spies sent to scout the land of Canaan (Joshua 14:6-15). When the other ten spies returned with fear and doubt, saying the land was unconquerable, Caleb brought an honest report. Yes, the Anakim were there—giants so tall they made the spies feel like grasshoppers. Yes, there were fortified cities. But Caleb's assessment was different: "Give me this hill country."
While others saw obstacles that made them afraid, Caleb saw a challenge he could meet with God's help.
What strikes me most powerfully is how Caleb is described from multiple perspectives:
This is a rare 360-degree appraisal of complete loyalty. Not all appraisals are consistent—some people are praised by one source and criticized by another. But Caleb's evaluation is unanimous and unwavering: a life of complete loyalty to God.
How would others describe your life? Would it be characterized by complete loyalty to God? This is worth reflecting on quietly, in solitude. What kind of life do you want to build?
Because of Caleb's loyalty, God made him three great promises:
1. Longevity and Strength
"The Lord has kept me alive these 45 years as he promised. So now here I am today 85 years old. My strength now is as great as it was the day Moses sent me out."
At 85 years old, Caleb possessed the physical vitality and strength of a 40-year-old. This is not just long life—it's life with purpose and power.
I want to share two stories of seniors who exemplified this vibrant postretirement calling:
Wu Yun's Story: Wu Yun was a music teacher from Taiwan. After her husband retired from his professorship, they returned to Taiwan. There, Wu Yun noticed seniors gathering in public squares and parks to dance. She saw that most of these dances had no connection to the Christian faith. So she created something new: praise dance.
She developed a movement where church members could dance together in public, worshiping God while sharing their faith. This initiative spread throughout Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China. Wu Yun released her latest album in 2025—at 89 years old. Though she can no longer lead the dancing, she still participates, sometimes dancing from a chair. Her life after retirement became even more influential.
Fu Hua's Story: Fu Hua was a nurse who came to faith in Christ in her late 40s. In 2003, she retired early and pursued theological training. She then went to work in leprosy villages in Guangdong, China, treating patients with leprosy—a disease that had left many disabled and isolated.
The government explicitly told her: "You may work here as a volunteer, but you cannot speak about Christianity or share Bible verses." So Fu Hua served silently, cleaning wounds and caring for patients with dignity.
Her faithful service became known. In 2007, she was elected as one of the "Ten Stars of Virtue" of Fujian Province. In 2008, she was featured on the television program Moving China and elected as one of the "Ten Angels of Loving." As a result, hundreds of CEOs and government officials invited her to share her story. Though she never directly preached, her testimony about how Jesus changed her life reached thousands. She proved that a postretirement life can be a season of extraordinary influence.
2. The Promised Land
Caleb was given Hebron—not just any land, but territory with deep spiritual significance. Hebron was the burial place of the patriarchs: Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, and Leah. It became the place where King David was enthroned. Today it remains the second holiest city in Judaism.
Remarkably, this sacred inheritance was given to an immigrant—not a biological descendant of Jacob, but someone who had completely committed himself to God.
3. The Promise of God Himself
But there is a third promise, perhaps the greatest: "The Lord will be with me."
Caleb understood something fundamental: God himself is the supreme promise. He said,
"The Lord promised that he will drive them out. The Lord promised himself."
What is there to fear when God has promised himself to you? You may lack longevity, you may lack land, but if you have God, you have everything. Without God, even possessing the whole earth leaves you empty. With God, you lack nothing.
Why did Caleb have the courage and confidence that the other spies lacked? His answer is simple and profound:
"The Lord will be with me."
It wasn't confidence in his own strength or cleverness. It was confidence in God's presence and God's promise. This is the foundation of true courage—not the absence of obstacles, but the presence of God.
As we conclude, I want to emphasize one final point: Caleb was always a team player. He wasn't a solo hero. He worked within the community, served the tribe of Judah, and remained faithful to God's larger purposes.
For those of us who are immigrants or minorities in a new land, Caleb's example is profoundly encouraging. We may come from different places. We may feel marginal or out of place. But we can still serve God faithfully. We can still influence our communities. We can still leave a legacy.
As we reflect on July 4th and American values, let us remember that we are here first and foremost for God's kingdom, which transcends all political boundaries. Our citizenship in God's kingdom is more fundamental than any earthly citizenship.
