We speak an extraordinary number of words each day—somewhere between 7,000 and 16,000 words on average. Yet our words reveal so much about who we are. Jesus said, "Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks." Our speech tells the story of our hearts.
We can learn a lot about a person from what comes out of their mouth. A doctor examines your tongue to diagnose health issues. An accent tells us where someone comes from. But for us as Christians, something fundamental has changed: we have a new home, and therefore we speak with a new accent. We speak differently because we are different people.
Paul begins his instructions to the Colossians with a clear call: devote yourselves to prayer. Prayer must be our first priority, not our last resort.
So many of us treat prayer like a fire extinguisher—we know it's there, but we only reach for it in emergencies. We exhaust all other options first, then finally pray. But Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians: "Pray without ceasing." Prayer is not a backup plan; it is the primary way we align ourselves with God's will and ask him to do what only he can do.
There's a powerful quote that captures this: "A failure to pray is a declaration of independence." When we don't pray about something, we're essentially saying to God, "I've got this. I can handle it." But when we truly grasp how powerful prayer is—that we get to talk to the King of the universe—everything changes.
Consider this: we might get excited about meeting a semi-famous person or seeing a celebrity in person. But we get to speak directly to the One who created the universe, who breathed life into humanity itself. We get to address our Maker, our Creator, the Sustainer of all life. And yet, how often do we pray?
Samuel Chadwick, a 19th-century Methodist minister, wrote:
Satan dreads nothing but prayer. His one concern is to keep the saints from praying. He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work, prayerless religion. He laughs at our toil. He mocks our wisdom but he trembles when we pray.
The wonderful truth is that tomorrow doesn't have to look like today. Whatever your prayer life looks like now, it can change.
Paul tells us to pray being watchful and thankful. These two qualities transform our prayer life.
Watchfulness means praying with our eyes open. We ask: Lord, what are you doing? What is happening in this situation? How can I pray into this context? We take off our blinders and look around, seeing where God is at work.
Thankfulness is equally crucial. Paul writes these instructions from prison, yet he still emphasizes thanksgiving. Throughout his letters, Paul uses variations of the word "thanksgiving" around 45 times. He calls us repeatedly to give thanks.
It's easy to keep our eyes forward, always looking ahead to the next thing. But how often do we stop, look back at what God has done, and simply give thanks? We teach our children to say "thank you"—it's a basic courtesy. Yet think of the ten lepers Jesus healed. Only one returned to give thanks. Ninety percent did not. How are we different?
The discipline of giving thanks realigns our hearts toward God's faithfulness.
Verse three reveals what Paul asks us to pray for: "Pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message."
Notice how specific this prayer is. When we pray vague, general prayers—"Lord, I lift everyone in need to you"—we'll never know if they're answered. But when we pray specific, detailed prayers, we have reason to rejoice when we see God answer them.
We wouldn't walk into a restaurant and say to the server, "I just have a general food need right now," and expect to be satisfied. We specify what we want. Yet in prayer, we often fail to be specific.
What's remarkable about Paul's prayer is what he asks for. Writing from prison, Paul doesn't pray, "Lord, get me out of here. Open the prison doors." Instead, he prays that God would open a door for the gospel message to spread. His greatest concern isn't his own freedom; it's the advancement of the gospel. It's more important to Paul to be faithful as a witness than to be a free man.
This challenges us. If we pray, our prayers might be: "Lord, bless me today. Give me a good day. Get me out of this sticky situation." But Paul's focus is different. He prays for the message to spread, for the gospel to go forward, even from his prison cell.
We see throughout Paul's ministry that sometimes doors are open and sometimes they're closed. Acts 16 records how the Holy Spirit prevented Paul and his companions from preaching in Asia and didn't allow them to enter Bithynia. But then a vision opened the door to Macedonia. Closed doors led to open ones.
Here, Paul writes from prison praying for an open door for the message. And God used Paul powerfully—even in chains. The question for us is: How can God use me in my current context? If we feel constrained or limited, we can still ask: Lord, how will you use me here?
When I was a teenager newly serious about faith, I was passionate but not always prayerful or sensitive to what God was doing. I decided to share the gospel with a friend one evening, and I approached it as a debate—defending the faith with apologetics. The conversation became heated, and afterward, I felt terrible. I didn't represent God well. I wasn't loving. I may have done more damage than good.
But last month, I had a different experience. My childhood best friend—someone I grew up with, one house away from me—died very suddenly. He was my age. I knew his children. He had no faith. It was a humanist funeral.
That morning, I felt heavy. I prayed desperately: "Lord, would your hope burden me? Would it spill out from who I am? Would you open opportunities for me to speak of you in a kind, gracious way?"
The funeral itself was deeply sad with little hope. But at the wake, something extraordinary happened. I wasn't trying to preach to vulnerable people. I was simply talking with people I knew, friends I'd grown up with, people I hadn't seen in years. And I didn't have to initiate a single conversation about Jesus. People asked me. They knew I was a pastor. They said: "Andy, tell me about the hope you have. I need to hear that today."
Conversation after conversation unfolded. By the evening, I was at a table with twelve people, and a man next to me—I'm sure God placed him there—began asking hard questions in a loud voice. The whole table stopped their conversations and leaned in. We talked about suffering. The conversation kept flowing. Someone else asked a question. Someone else asked another. I got to share the gospel with that whole table. There was no hostility—only openness, desperation for hope.
I was supposed to have a date night with my wife, but I called and said, "Jo, I'm going to be an hour late because God's doing something right now." I left buzzing because God had opened doors that day.
We encounter automatic doors in shops nowadays. You walk up and they should open automatically. But sometimes they don't, and it's awkward. There's no point trying to force open an automatic door—it won't work. Paul isn't telling us to force doors open. He's telling us to pray that God will open them. Our job is faithfulness. God's job is opening doors.
We need to move in intentional ways to seek open doors. Ask yourself: Do I have meaningful friendships with someone who doesn't know Jesus? If you scrolled through your phone—WhatsApp, text messages—how far would you have to go before finding someone who doesn't know Christ?
Look for intentional, meaningful ways to seek open doors with the people in your life.
Verse 5 tells us: "Be wise in the way you act towards outsiders."
We communicate through two channels: proclamation (our words) and demonstration (our lifestyle). The most compelling witness is when someone has not only a good message but also a life that backs it up. I knew a woman who came to faith a few years ago because her friend not only had a good message—she had something about her life that was different and compelling.
But the opposite is also true. When someone says all the right things but their life doesn't back it up, it leaves a sour taste. It feels inauthentic.
The world is watching. They're evaluating: Is Christian faith legitimate? Does your life actually support what you claim to believe? Many people say, "I'm not a Christian because the church is full of hypocrites." God certainly uses broken people, but Jesus did say: "This is how the world will know you're my disciples—by the way you love one another." We need to walk the talk and also talk the walk.
Verse 5 continues: "Make the most of every opportunity."
Imagine sitting in traffic at a red light. One or two cars ahead, the light turns green, but the car in front doesn't move—the driver is distracted. We all think: "Go, go, go!" This is our window of opportunity before the light turns red again.
In life, there are moments like this—green lights of opportunity:
All of us—this isn't for certain personality types or the naturally gifted—have been saved and sent by Jesus. We've received grace, the greatest news on Earth. Jesus calls every Christian to join his mission. We've been reconciled to God, and he's given us the ministry of reconciliation.
This happens everywhere: in the workplace, at the gym, at the school gate, in a cafe, in a hospital room, wherever we are.
Verse 6: "Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt."
Our speech should be gracious—loving, kind, because we've received grace. But it should also be salty.
In the ancient world, salt preserved meat and treated wounds. Salt stings when applied to a wound, but it fights infection and prevents decay. When we lovingly share the gospel, we speak grace—that God is loving and gracious. But we also speak truth—that God calls us to repentance, to turn around, to be transformed. That's salty.
Jesus exemplified this perfectly. With the woman caught in adultery, about to be stoned, he showed grace: "Neither do I condemn you." But then he showed salt: "Go now and leave your life of sin." Grace and salt.
With the woman at the well, he asked for a drink, showing her dignity and kindness. That's grace. But then he said, "Where's your husband?"—speaking to the hard truth of her life. That's salt.
Jesus came full of grace and full of truth. We need God's help in our conversations. We must pray: Lord, give me the right words. Show me what's happening in this person's heart. Help me speak words of grace and words of truth.
The final verse asks: "[Be] prepared to give an answer to everyone." That's challenging, isn't it? How can we know the right answer for everyone?
Think of a janitor with a big set of keys. There's not one master key that opens every door—different locks need different keys. Similarly, as we share the gospel, we discover that different people need different things:
We must pray: "Lord, show me what's going on in this person's heart. Give me the right words." As we seek open doors, we pray first. We ask God to open what we cannot open. Then we move forward through proclamation—our words—and through demonstration—our lifestyle and character.
When we seek open doors, we do so through prayer, proclamation, and declaration. We ask God to open the doors. We speak the gospel. We live it out. And together, we join Jesus in his mission of reconciliation, seeking open doors in his name.
