Exploring Real Rest Through Jesus
Jesus teaches us about rest through a profound invitation recorded in Matthew's Gospel. He speaks not to a select few, but to anyone and everyone who listens—especially to those who are weary and burdened.
Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
Jesus doesn't offer a technique, a three-step program for better sleep, or a self-help mantra. Instead, he offers a personal invitation to relationship. This reveals something crucial: Jesus isn't talking about surface-level rest—like a vacation voucher or extra hours of sleep.
Sleep scientists tell us it's possible to sleep through an entire night yet wake exhausted if your body doesn't reach REM sleep. We've probably experienced this on a larger scale: we get the day off we've been waiting for, the holiday we've dreamed about, and then the moment we return to normal life, we're exhausted again. Jesus is saying we need a deeper kind of rest than physical recuperation alone can provide.
Jesus speaks of a yoke—the wooden frame tied to oxen to make them pull a burden. He addresses us as weary and burdened, yet he doesn't say, "Come to me and I will remove all your burdens." Instead, he says: "Take my yoke upon you." He's offering us a choice between different burdens.
Later in Matthew's account, Jesus criticizes the Pharisees, saying:
They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.
These burdens represent expectations and demands—a standard we must meet to be acceptable. Whether we realize it or not, we're all wearing some yoke, all living for something or someone that sets the standard we're trying to reach.
What makes us so exhausted? It's not just impossible demands at work or an understaffed system. It's deeper. Author Tim Keller calls it "the work beneath the work"—the underlying pressure to feel like we've done enough, like we are enough.
For some, it's the drive for renown or status through achievement. For others, it's living up to parents' expectations, being a good parent, a good friend, a good person. The problem is relentless: once you reach one standard, you must exceed it. You can never stop.

Under the surface I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service... Pressure like a grip grip grip and it won't let go... Who am I if I don't have what it takes? No cracks no breaks no mistakes.
This pressure to prove we're good enough—whether in social life, family, work, ethics, or spirituality—is utterly exhausting. Even luxury holidays and reduced work weeks can't touch it. We're bone tired because we're racing against a standard we can never quite meet.
Why would living for Jesus be any different? The answer lies in who Jesus claims to be. He said he'd always existed, that he had authority to forgive all wrongdoings, that he would judge every person at the end of history. People rioted when they realized he was claiming to be on God's level.
Yet when describing his own heart, Jesus says something stunning:
I am gentle and humble in heart.
This is hugely significant. According to Jesus, if you want to see God, you're looking at him. So what is God really like at his core? He is gentle. He is humble.
Consider the woman who had been bleeding for twelve years. In her culture, this made her ceremonially unclean—taboo to touch anyone, let alone a religious leader. Yet she reached out and touched Jesus's cloak, desperate for healing.
Jesus didn't rebuke her. He stopped, turned, looked her in the eye, and said:
Take heart daughter. Your faith has healed you.
Before all the crowd, he called her "daughter." He honored her. He accepted her. He was gentle with her. After twelve years of loneliness, pain, isolation, and shame, she found rest in his gentle presence.
When we think of the yoke metaphor, there's something profound: a yoke connects two oxen to carry a burden together. Jesus isn't the distant farmer who loads you up and walks away. He's the other ox.
He doesn't say, "Take my yoke—here's what I want you to do. Off you go. Let me know when it's finished." Instead, he says: "Come to me. Attach yourself to me. Do life shoulder to shoulder with me." Even though Jesus is God himself, he is not proud. He is humble in heart. He will never leave us to carry any burden alone.
Jesus showed this humility most powerfully in his death. He said his death wasn't a tragic accident—he came to give his life as a ransom for many, to exchange his life for our freedom.
Why was this necessary? Deep down, we know the truth: we're not good enough. It's not just that the world has unfair standards. It's that we were made for a standard of goodness we don't live up to. We know it. We're restless because of it. We will forever feel the pressure.
But Jesus, who is good enough and deserves to rest assured in his perfection, chose instead to humble himself. He stooped low, took our crushing burden of failure and guilt onto his own shoulders, and gave his life for us. Our guilt nailed him to the cross. He died in restless agony so we could have everlasting rest.
Then he rose again to offer us his Everlasting rest.
If Jesus is telling the truth about himself, then this is what God is like: not pointing fingers of blame, but opening his arms wide on the cross, saying:
Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.
When we take his yoke and attach ourselves to him, he bears the burden we could never carry. He does "the work beneath the work" for us, on our behalf. We never again need to fear not being good enough—because if we're attached to him, his goodness is enough for all of us.
We are free to fail. We're invited into a family where we don't have to prove ourselves because we know he is gentle with us and humble toward us.
If you've put your trust in Jesus and are yoked to him: know that his yoke being easy doesn't mean life will be easy. He calls us to sacrificial love, to courage when the right thing is scary, to care even when it hurts.
But his burden is light because we never carry it alone. He's always with us. He's not pointing fingers; he has his arms outstretched to forgive us when we fail and to help us with his gentle strength, day after day.
Even when life is hard, there is deep rest available: the knowledge that you are enough for him, even though you're a mess. Lean into that more and more.
Think of it like a parent holding a sleeping child. That child doesn't need to earn the parent's love or hide anything or prove anything. The parent simply loves them because they're their child. In Christ, God adopts you as his beloved daughter or son. You don't have to earn his love. You don't have to hide or prove anything. He just loves you because you're his.
If you're skeptical or curious, exploring these things: please don't let this bounce off you as just another self-help claim. Don't dismiss it as helpful for others but not for you.
Jesus claims to be something totally unique: the God who made us, come to meet us. The ancient bishop Augustine wrote:
You made us for yourself and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you.
If Jesus is God, there's a reason nothing else gives us the rest we need. We weren't made for anything or anyone else. We were made by God and for God. On the deepest level, we will always be restless until we find our rest in him.
