We rely on so many essential apps in our daily lives. There's the map app—a breakthrough in technology that fits in our pocket. I remember when maps were giant pieces of cloth that you had to study in an index before plotting your route. Now we have intelligence that goes before us, predicting traffic and obstacles ahead.
But what if we took this further? What if an app could tell you what mood someone is in before they call? Or what if, before coming to church on Sunday, you could scroll through and see which friends will be there and what their mood will be? We love having intelligence entities go before us because, truthfully, we like to be in control—control of our mood, our decisions, our outcomes.
But here's the question: when we put all our decisions and all the weight of outcomes on intelligence—whether AI or algorithm—is that enough?
Long ago, the Israelites found themselves at the foot of Mount Sinai. Moses had gone up the mountain to speak with God, leaving the people behind. When he delayed in coming down, the people grew anxious and gathered around Aaron:
"Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him." (Exodus 32:1)
It's telling that they referred to Moses this way—"this fellow." They were demoting him from leader to someone beneath them, someone no longer in their hearts. And so they asked Aaron to make them a god they could see and control.
We shouldn't laugh at them. Today, many young people meet their boyfriends and girlfriends through dating apps. You tell the algorithm all your secrets—what you're looking for, your dealbreakers, what you hope to find. The algorithm chooses for you. It goes before you. It removes the vulnerability and uncomfortableness. You just swipe and choose. So maybe we're doing the very same thing the Israelites did: constantly wanting something to go before us, removing our uncertainty, giving us control.
It's easier to make a god you can control than a god you need to wait on. When Aaron made the calf from their golden earrings, they declared:
"These are your gods, Israel, who brought you out of Egypt." (Exodus 32:4)
How quickly they forgot. They built an altar and announced a festival. The next day, people rose early and sacrificed offerings, then:
"They sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry." (Exodus 32:6)
The word revelry speaks to unrestrained physical appetite and self-gratification. At the depth of our hearts, what we really want is control. We'll put our trust in anything that promises to give us that sense of moving forward, of being secure, of knowing the future.
But the Bible says: "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" (Jeremiah 17:9)
In 2008, the housing market crashed—a domino effect anchored in defaults. But here's what's crucial: banks, investment firms, accounting institutes, and rating agencies all had sophisticated intelligence. They all said the US housing market was sound. Yet the system protected itself by only confirming what people wanted to hear.
These entities cannot see into the future. They cannot see redemption. They can only calculate based on what you already see. The thing you build to agree with you will never tell you the truth. It will only tell you what you want to hear.
So ask yourself: In the way you've designed your life plan, in your education and career investments, in your life decisions—are these accurate? Or have you looked only at one dimension: financial gain and security?
When you choose a profession, something subtle happens: you're not just wishing anymore—you're in a life workshop being cultivated. You choose friends in the same field. You speak the same language. You're being shaped.
Look back at your own decisions. Would you choose that career path for your children? Many successful people I know say, "All I want is for my kids to be happy. I want them to find that light." This reveals something profound: whatever you chose, however you made those decisions—it has to be more. Otherwise, you wouldn't want your kids in the same grind.
When you trust your life into the algorithm, at the end, you're just a number. It's never enough. One more quarter of bonus. One more rung to climb. It's endless.
The book of Ruth tells the story of a girl whose life was shattered. She lost her husband. She followed her mother-in-law back to Israel in a time of bitterness. But something remarkable happened: Ruth chose faith over prediction. She said:
"Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my God, and your God will be my God." (Ruth 3:11)
Ruth looked at the system, at all the predictions available to her, and said no. She would trust in something greater.
In ancient Israel, there was an institution called the goel—the kinsman redeemer. When someone suffered, when debt consumed them, a redeemer would step in and restore what was lost—not just financially, but restoring status and dignity.
Ruth met Boaz, and he said:
"The Lord bless you, my daughter... All the people of my town know that you are a woman of noble character... I will do all you ask." (Ruth 3:11-12)
By all logic, Ruth should have chosen a younger, more vibrant, more prosperous man with a better future. But she didn't. She chose faithfulness, and God's faithfulness connected her with Boaz.
And here's the astounding end: Ruth's lineage became King David. By all predictions, by all algorithms, by all advice that told her she could do better—she chose to trust something ancient yet also the future. She trusted the God of Israel.
Why does the kinsman redeemer matter today? Because when you're lost, when you're searching for greater truth, when you keep repeating history—that's when you need a redeemer outside the broken system. God saw that we needed someone outside our cycle of prediction and self-interest. So He sent Jesus.
In John 15, Jesus says:
"I no longer call you servants... Instead, I have called you friends." (John 15:15)
Think about this. When we trust in algorithms and systems, we become data points. Everyone in a company has an employee number. You're reduced to data. But Jesus says you are a friend.
A friend has personality. A friend comes with need. A friend shares glory. A friend ensures you never travel alone. Your debt becomes my debt. My glory is shared with you.
Consider Joseph, a young man from a good family, brilliant and handsome, destined for success. But he was betrayed, sent away, falsely accused of an affair. He could have given in to temptation. Life was already hard; why not take the easy path? But Joseph remained faithful.
When Pharaoh redeemed Joseph from prison and gave him authority, Pharaoh gave him a new name: Zaphenath-Paneah—the revealer of secrets.
Joseph was no longer a foreigner or a prisoner. His name changed because his faithfulness was redeemed. No one could challenge his integrity. And when his brothers came to him, afraid for their lives, Joseph said:
"You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives." (Genesis 50:20)
What God does through redemption is different from prediction. Redemption goes backward and forward. It doesn't erase your past—it repurposes it for a future the algorithm could not have predicted.
In Job, God promises:
"I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten." (Joel 2:25)
God takes all that you have done, all that you have suffered, and repurposes it. He restores time itself.
I came of age in an era when there were few Asians. I had to learn American ways. I thought I'd land in tech and stay there. But God had other plans. Today, when I speak to people, it's not from a mountaintop of theoretical success. It's because I look back and realize I've been walking a jacket path. What he has done is change all that I've done. All my choices—even the wrong ones—he redeems them and gives them purpose.
Romans 8 says:
"The creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God." (Romans 8:21)
When you are redeemed, everything you touch changes. The creation itself responds. Even your landscaping—what was ugly before—becomes beautiful again.
Before you ask God for a life plan—before you ask where you're supposed to go when you're already three years into a degree—ask first: who is Jesus to you?
Is he just "that God"? Is he just the one you encounter on Sunday? Or is he your Lord? Your redeemer? The person you await in prayer? The one your worship points to?
Before you need an execution plan, you need your heart cleansed, purified, and sanctified. You need to know yourself before God—not as "the math person" or "the athlete" or "the one everyone likes." You need to know yourself as the one He knows in sadness, in trial, in suffering.
Ask for the presence of the plan holder, not just the plan.
Jesus said: "My yoke is easy and my burden is light." Life is too hard to walk alone. Walk beside the Lord Jesus Christ. That's what He broke the cross for—to reveal His life plan for you.
Everyone is unique in God's eyes. Think in terms of the kingdom to come, not the kingdom of earthly achievement. Where your treasure is, your heart will follow. If your security rests on career, achievement, or what the algorithm predicts, then that's what you become. But if your security rests in relationship with the one who holds your tomorrow, then you are transformed.
Prediction and redemption are not the same thing. Redemption repurposes your past and secures a future no algorithm could have predicted. That's the hope beyond the algorithms.
