Jesus, the Bread of Life

In John chapter 6, the crowd wants Jesus the baker. Just the day before, Jesus had fed over 5,000 people. But the crowd comes back the next day still not satisfied — they want more. They want Jesus to go one better than Moses, who fed a nation bread from heaven six days a week for 40 years.

But Jesus pushes back. He tells them: I'm not simply a baker here to meet your physical needs, important though they are. I'm the bread. I am the bread of life.

Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." "Sir," they said, "always give us this bread." Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."

What is Jesus claiming, and what is Jesus promising?

Jesus Claims to Be Essential

For many of us today, bread is not an essential part of our diet. Gone are the days when people had four pieces of toast for breakfast and another two at eleven o'clock. But in Jesus' day, bread was a staple food — a basic necessity.

Jesus is saying that he is essential for life — not just physical life, but spiritual life, eternal life, a living relationship with the one true God and with Jesus Christ his Son. He is not an optional extra or an upgrade on the life we already want. He is indispensable for true life. He is essential for eternal life. He is the bread of life.

Jesus Promises to Satisfy

The crowd knew that bread is necessary but doesn't fill you up for long — soon you're hungry again and want more. But Jesus says:

Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

He is the ultimate satisfaction for our ultimate longings — longings that are met not in something, but in someone.

When We Are Exhausted

Sometimes life is busy with all its demands, or we feel weak with age and sickness. Sleep, holidays, and physical strength can help for a time. But Jesus satisfies our deepest longing for rest. As we trust in him, our whole being is refreshed.

When We Are Lonely

Sometimes we are isolated, cut off from others, misunderstood. Friends and family can talk to us, listen to us, hug us. But Jesus satisfies our deepest longing for intimacy. As we trust in him, we are known by the One who loves us and will never leave us.

When We Are Lost

Sometimes we are confused, unsure what to do — the world seems strange to us. Wisdom and direction from others can help. But Jesus satisfies our deepest longing for home. He has found us. And as we trust in him, he will bring us to be with him.

Not Just the Baker, But the Bread

Jesus is not just the baker who gives — he is the bread who is essential and who satisfies. While we are tempted to snack elsewhere, may his never-ending supply satisfy all of us today.

Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."
