Imagine a ship captain sailing through dark, foggy waters. Confident in his experience and crew, he spots a light ahead and orders a course change. But a message comes back: "No, you change your course." Offended by being challenged, the captain insists, "I am the captain. Change your course immediately." The reply arrives: "I am the lighthouse. You are about to crash into the rocky coast."
The captain suddenly realizes his mistake. The issue wasn't outside himself—it was deep within him. His pride had blinded him to the truth. This is our story today. Like that captain, we sometimes refuse to listen to God's warnings, stubbornly heading down paths that lead to wreckage.
Our passage begins in 2 Kings 20:12. King Hezekiah of Judah, after recovering from a serious illness, receives envoys from Babylon. But instead of greeting them humbly, he shows them everything—all his treasures, his gold, his silver, his weapons, his storehouses. Why? It was pride. He wanted to impress them with his wealth and power.
But God saw what was really in his heart. According to 2 Chronicles 32, God allowed these envoys to test Hezekiah and reveal what was truly there: a proud heart. And the consequences were severe.
The prophet Isaiah confronted him: "All that is in your house and that which your fathers have stored up until now will be carried to Babylon. And some of your own sons who will come from you will be taken away and become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon."
Hezekiah's response? "The word of the Lord that you have spoken is good... there is peace and security in my days." Even when told his own descendants would be enslaved, he only cared that judgment wouldn't come during his lifetime.
After Hezekiah came other kings of Judah. Manasseh was evil. Amon was even more evil. Even good King Josiah stumbled toward the end of his life. With each generation, the morality of God's people deteriorated further and further.
Yet God sent prophets—repeatedly. Listen to Jeremiah's words: "For 23 years, the word of the Lord has come to me and I have spoken persistently to you, but you have not listened."
Just like that ship captain refused to hear the lighthouse warning, Judah refused to hear God's warnings. And the question echoes to us: What is God warning you about right now? What course is He calling you to change—in your marriage, your singleness, your business dealings, your relationships with your children?
About 150 years after Hezekiah's pride, God's judgment came. The Babylonian Empire invaded. For two years, they advanced through three stages of conquest. Jerusalem was surrounded; food and water were cut off. The Bible describes the horror: the sword killing young and old, the burning of God's temple, the destruction of the city's walls, the breaking of sacred vessels.
In 2 Chronicles 36, God's word is clear:
"The Lord, the God of their fathers, sent persistently to them by his messengers, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place. But they kept mocking the messengers of God, despising his words, and scoffing at his prophets until the wrath of the Lord rose against his people until there was no more remedy."
Every warning had come true. Sin always produces consequences.
Those who survived the sword were taken into exile in Babylon—far to what we now call Iraq. Among them was a young man named Daniel, who would become central to God's next chapter of redemption.
But here's where God's grace breaks through: He didn't abandon His people permanently.
Through the prophet Jeremiah, God announced a specific timeline: "These nations shall serve the king of Babylon for 70 years. Then after those 70 years are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation."
Why exactly 70 years? Because Israel had violated God's law for 490 years. God had commanded: cultivate the land for six years, but in the seventh year, let the land rest. Trust me. I will provide. But in their greed and pride, Israel farmed every seventh year too.
God said in effect: "You would not let the land rest for 490 years. So now I will force you to rest. The land will have its 70 years of Sabbath while you are in Babylon."
This wasn't arbitrary punishment—it was perfectly just and perfectly measured. And it came with a promise: after 70 years, God would bring His people back.
But why did God preserve Judah when He let the ten northern tribes of Israel be lost forever? Because of a promise made long before.
God had sworn to Abraham: "In your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed." Through Jacob's tribe of Judah, the Messiah would come. Through David's lineage, a King would arise whose kingdom would never end.
God told David: "When your days are fulfilled, I will raise up your offspring after you... and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever... Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me."
So even though Judah grew worse and worse, God did not destroy them because of His covenant. As it says: "The Lord was not willing to destroy the house of David because of the covenant that he had made with David... he had promised to give him a lamp, and to his sons forever."
Though they were exiled in pagan Babylon, the Jewish people were miraculously preserved. And 70 years later, God moved the king of Babylon to release them. They returned to rebuild Jerusalem.
And here's why this matters to us: Without that return, Jesus could never have been born. A few hundred years after returning from exile, in the town of Bethlehem, the Savior of the world was born.
When you open the New Testament, the very first thing it tells you is the genealogy of Jesus:
"After the deportation to Babylon... Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary of whom Jesus was born, who is called the Christ."
God's promise to Judah had come true. As Hebrews 7:14 says: "It is evident that our Lord descended from Judah."
And the miracle didn't end there. After Jesus ascended to heaven, in 70 AD, Jerusalem was destroyed again and the Jewish people were scattered throughout the world for nearly 1,900 years. They could have been lost like the Philistines, the Amalekites, the Ammonites—peoples we don't even know anymore.
But God preserved them. And in 1948, after 1,900 years, God brought the Jewish people back to the land He promised them.
Every time you see news about Israel, let it remind you: God keeps His promises. What seemed impossible for two millennia happened exactly as prophesied. God is preparing the way for the second coming of Christ.
But here's the personal application: God brought Judah back to Israel not just for them. He brought them back for you. Why? Because without a restored Judah, there would be no Messiah born. And without the Messiah, you would still be in your sin. You would still be in that addiction, that destructive relationship, that broken mindset.
But Jesus came. He went to the cross. He died for every sin you've ever committed—not for His own sins, because He was perfect. He rose again so that "those who believe in Him will not perish but have eternal life."
That's why Revelation 5:5 says:
"Weep no more. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered."
Maybe you're here today holding back tears. Maybe you're facing a crisis in your marriage, a sick child, a health diagnosis. Maybe you think there's no hope. But listen: Weep no more. The Lion of Judah has conquered. Your future is secure. Everything will work together for the good of those who love Him.
So the question before you today is simple: Are you like that ship captain, stubbornly refusing to hear God's warnings? Or will you listen to the lighthouse?
If you're heading down the wrong path, if you feel lost in darkness, Jesus says:
"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
There's a moment when you must transfer all your trust from yourself to Christ. Not through church attendance or good behavior or rituals, but through genuine faith in what He did at the cross.
When you put your faith in Jesus, the Bible promises: He forgives all your sin. He makes you His child. You enter into a personal relationship with God. And when you die, instead of facing eternity separated from Him, you will spend eternity with Him.
The choice is yours. Is today the day?
