This morning we're thinking about one crucial thing: wisdom. As we journey through Nehemiah together, we'll repeatedly see that he's a one-man agent of change who believes in God for great things and accomplishes those great things. But in all that he does, it's his wisdom that wins the day—wisdom that enables him to navigate complicated and desperate situations and succeed in what God has placed on his heart.
Wisdom is as great a need for us today as it was for Nehemiah. While we're unlikely to face something as challenging as rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, we all know what it's like to be confronted with huge challenges that require great wisdom. For some, especially in things God calls us to do, these can seem completely beyond our abilities. For most of us, the need for wisdom comes from simply living complex lives with multiple competing demands—keeping all the plates spinning without them crashing to the ground, especially when something unexpected hits.
There's a Swedish proverb that says, "We are too soon old and too late wise." We often wish we'd been wiser in our failures and mistakes. But wisdom can be defined as living life skillfully—living along the grain of reality rather than against it, understanding how things work (especially the human heart), and achieving our aims as a result.
In just 10 short verses, Nehemiah displays six brilliant moments of wisdom as he seeks an audience with the king of Persia.
Verse 1 tells us: "In the month of Nissan, in the 20th year of King Xerxes, when wine was brought before him, I took wine and gave it to the king." The identification of the Jewish month of Nissan is crucial—it's four months after the events of Nehemiah 1, which occurred in the month of Kislev.
Nehemiah had waited four months before making his move. Four months of praying, discerning, strategizing, and probably consulting with others. Four agonizing months of waiting for God's timing. In wisdom, he knew he had to wait. His deep passion and conviction hadn't led to a knee-jerk reaction. He understood the wisdom of taking things slowly, gaining the right perspective, developing a strategy, and waiting for the right moment.
Proverbs teaches us this repeatedly: "A person's wisdom yields patience" (Proverbs 19:1), and "Those who speak rashly will come into ruin" (Proverbs 13:13). How many of us have learned that some things need time? That we must not rush in, but play the long game, wait for the right time, and have perseverance in that waiting?
Nehemiah creates kingdom opportunity with the king through a wise approach. The text says, "I had not been sad in his presence before. So the king asked me, 'Why does your face look so sad when you're not ill? This could be nothing but sadness of heart.'"
For four months, Nehemiah hadn't shown his sadness before the king about Jerusalem's condition. But now he lets it show, inviting the king to engage with him on a personal and emotional level. He's "baiting a hook," knowing that as a servant to the Persian king, he cannot directly ask for anything—that would lead to certain failure or punishment.
He must create another way, one that understands how people work and how to create kingdom opportunity. This is wisdom Jesus repeatedly demonstrated in the New Testament—at the well with the woman in John 4, knowing exactly how to open up a situation with gentleness and precision to bring about what God wants to do.
When the king opens the situation and asks what Nehemiah wants, his response is carefully chosen. He could have said his people were in distress and the walls were in ruin. Instead, he says: "May the king live forever. Why should my face not look sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins and its gates have been destroyed by fire?"
He doesn't refer to his people's current plight. Instead, he appeals to the deep veneration that Persians, like other ancient cultures, had for their ancestors. Something united them, making the issue resonate with the king. He frames this not as a political request, but as an issue of common humanity. Nehemiah knows which words will work.
For most of us, wisdom hinges on how we use our tongues. Just a few words can completely unlock opportunities and bring about change, or completely stop things and destroy them. Learning what words to use in a situation is a vital place to cultivate wisdom.
When the king simply asks, "What is it you want?" Nehemiah faces an incredible opportunity. The most powerful king on earth is saying, "What do you want?" He could ask for anything. His tactics have worked. But he knows he's only got one shot at this.
So verse 4 tells us: "Then I prayed to the God of heaven." In a split second, he fires an "arrow prayer" to heaven, asking for God's guidance and wisdom. He doesn't want to mess this up.
Here's an important lesson: Nehemiah's wisdom has put him on a roll creating an amazing opportunity, but he doesn't rely on that wisdom alone. He lives out a deep dependence on God, who is the source of his wisdom. He seeks God for more of it.
You may be incredibly wise—you've been through much, you've read much, you've learned from others and from God. But the greatest wisdom is to never be wise in your own sight. Know you're not wise enough. Cultivate that deep, continued dependence on God for wisdom and guidance. Don't go on autopilot in life, but have the ability to pray in every situation for wisdom and guidance.
For Nehemiah, this arrow prayer flows from the overflow of the deep prayer life we saw in chapter 1. So it is with us: we can only moment by moment seek wisdom in life's complexities—first, if we're wise enough to know we need to; and second, if we're deep enough in our prayer lives to be able to.
Nehemiah answers: "If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried, so that I can rebuild it." Notice—he doesn't call it Jerusalem. He calls it "the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried."
From Ezra 4, Nehemiah likely knew that Jerusalem's previous rebuilding efforts had been stopped because opponents had flagged to the king that this city was once the capital of a nation that had rebelled against foreign rule. He was wise to the political sensitivities and employed great tact, calling it simply a city in Judah, not a capital.
Notice he doesn't lie—this isn't manipulation. This is the pure wisdom from heaven that James talks about (James 4), not earthly, demonic wisdom. It's the wisdom Jesus talks about in Matthew 10: being as cunning as serpents but as innocent as doves. Sometimes wisdom lies in what we don't say as well as what we do—reading the room, knowing what a given person needs to hear. It's often a morally fine line, which is why we need that deep dependence on God. But God can give us wisdom to see things succeed.
When the king agrees to Nehemiah's request and asks how long the journey will take, Nehemiah senses the favor he's been given and presses home the advantage. He asks for two further things, released by two royal letters with the king's seal. First, a letter for safe passage to local leaders near Jerusalem. Second, a letter to access the king's forest to release wood—crucial because Jerusalem had no nearby forests, just as Solomon needed imported wood to rebuild the temple.
Verse 8 tells us: "Because the gracious hand of my God was on me, the king granted my requests." In wisdom, Nehemiah discerned an atmosphere of grace. He just knew God was on this. God was working in that very moment, and there was an open door.
Nehemiah understands Ecclesiastes 3—there is a season for everything. This was a season of open grace. Like the men of Issachar in 1 Chronicles 12, "he knew the times and seasons and the ways that he should walk in as a result." It's a wise spiritual discernment that knows when God's doing something and there's capacity for more, but also discerns the limits. Notice he doesn't ask for the bank or everything and anything. He knows what God is doing and discerns the boundaries.
How's your spiritual discernment? Can you spot when God's on the case in a situation with open doors? Can you discern when He's not, or when He's limiting things, so you're not to make things happen yourself or force ahead? Are you growing in this capacity—this wisdom of sensitivity to what God is doing? Or is it like learning a foreign language, with still so much to learn?
In all these things, Nehemiah shows us a life saturated with deep wisdom, which enables and releases what God wants to do through him. He shows us that it's important to pray hard for God to move (Nehemiah 1). But then here in Nehemiah 2, it's important to be part of the answer to that prayer through walking in great wisdom. This is often how God works with us—in partnership.
The challenge for us today is: How can we grow in the wisdom that God calls us to have? How can we become as wise as Nehemiah?
Wisdom is not something that can be just learned from a book—that's knowledge. You might have heard the difference: knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is knowing not to put one in a fruit salad. You can't get wisdom like getting knowledge by studying hard and learning it like a times table. However, Scripture tells us there are ways we can grow in wisdom, and there's one above all that's most important.
We saw a hint of it in verse 4 when Nehemiah prays. The first way to gain wisdom is to ask God for it.
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God who generously gives to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. — James 1:5-6
It's a promise from God who does not lie. When we ask Him for wisdom, He gives it to us. Sometimes He downloads it directly into our minds; sometimes it grows organically across the breadth of our lives. And James says it's a generous, overflowing giving—not little and mighty, but tremendous.
Many of you know the story in 1 Kings 3 where God visits Solomon and asks him, like the king asks Nehemiah here: "What do you want?" He could have asked for anything from the King of Kings. But Solomon, being wise as his father David already knew, asks for wisdom—a wise and discerning mind to govern God's people. God is so thrilled with that request that He gives him wisdom and also riches, honor, and legacy on top of it, because they flow from wisdom being applied. His wisdom was such that people came from across the world to hear it and be blessed by it.
The same is true for us. God is so thrilled when we ask Him for wisdom. He loves giving it to us. When He gives us wisdom, He gives us everything that flows with that wisdom when it's applied. And it's a wisdom that blesses others.
Fundamentally, we can get wisdom from others and from the school of hard knocks. But ultimately, God is the source of all wisdom. That's why He's the best one to go to for it.
Paul writes: "In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3). All the treasures—not just some, but everything you need in terms of wisdom are hidden in Christ as treasure. He's got wisdom for your workplace, for your relationships, for your calling, for your community, for your present, for your future. He's got wisdom that overflows, ready for us to ask of it.
What do you need to ask God for wisdom about today? The wisest thing you can ever do is this:
The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. — Proverbs 4:7
Ask God for wisdom. In this moment, whatever you're facing in your life, you need that wisdom. The promise of James 1:5 is for you. If anyone lacks wisdom, ask God for it, and He gives it in a generous and overflowing way.
Lift before the Lord what you need wisdom for. It could be anything and everything. Lord, we want to live out Your word that says You give us wisdom and that You're the source of all wisdom. We drop to the floor our own ability, our own skills, our own experience, our own current wisdom. And Lord, we ask for Your wisdom from heaven.
We need it to deal with the situations we're facing. We need it to just walk day by day. Give us wisdom in our relationships, in our careers, in how we speak to others, in the unexpected things, in discerning what You're doing. Lord, give us Your wisdom. Thank You for Your promise. We stand on that promise that You do not lie, that Your word is true, that You give us this wisdom. As we ask, we receive it. Thank You, Lord, for the wisdom You've granted us in this moment. May it grow and multiply and flow out of our lives to bless many.
