Nehemiah is leading the Israelites in rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. By this point, they had already faced opposition and had built half of the wall. To understand the scale of their work: the wall was believed to be about two to two and a half miles long, with some sections reaching 8 meters thick, around eight gates, 10 to 11 defensive towers, and standing 30 to 40 feet tall. Even though they had completed half the wall, the people were exhausted, weary, and burnt out.
Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, Ammonites, and the people of Ashdod were not happy about the rebuilding. They mocked and ridiculed the Israelites, wanting them to stop. Their strategy was discouragement—they knew that if they could destroy confidence, they could stop the work without lifting a sword.
We all face discouragement in our lives: voices telling us we can't do something, that we're no good, that we're underqualified. It's hard to tune out these voices and keep going. But Nehemiah and the Israelites had to remind themselves why they were rebuilding and who they were building for.
The enemy often attacks what God is building. When we follow God, opposition should not surprise us. Spiritual attack is often subtle and comes through small things: discouragement, exhaustion, apathy, fear, distraction, isolation.
How did Nehemiah respond? He didn't panic, quit, or dismiss the people's fears. He also didn't pretend everything was fine or deny the enemy threats. Instead, he prayed, prepared, and positioned people wisely while keeping the work moving. Having faith isn't about pretending there isn't a battle—it's about continuing despite the battle.
Nehemiah stationed people behind the lowest points of the wall, posting them by families with their swords, spears, and bows. He told them:
"Don't be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes."
They didn't stop building because opposition was great—they kept going but prepared themselves. Preparation and vigilance were key. Half the men did the work while the other half were equipped with weapons. Those who carried materials worked with one hand and held a weapon in the other. Each builder wore a sword at his side as he worked.
Nehemiah reminded the Israelites to remember what you're building and who you're doing it for. What is it in your life right now that you are building for God and for people around you?
Maybe you're raising children who know and love Jesus. Maybe you're serving in church, leading a group, or investing in people. Maybe you're being a Christian witness in a university, college, workplace, or neighborhood where nobody else shares your faith. Or perhaps right now, God is building your character and trust in him.
When life gets difficult, it's easy to lose focus and be distracted. But we need to keep our eyes fixed on God and remember why we're doing what we're doing.
One of the students, Aliyah, does archery competitively and is very good at it. She knows exactly how to stand, position herself, pull the bow, and aim accurately—because she trained for years. You can't expect someone with no training to pick up a bow and use it effectively. The same is true for us as Christians: we need to know the weapon we have in our hand. We need to know and understand the word of God.
The word of God is sharper than any double-edged sword. (Hebrews)
Let's be a community and church that understands the power of the Bible. Let's be so familiar with scripture that we can pick a verse when we need it—when talking to a friend, bringing encouragement, or facing desperate situations. Knowing scripture helps us pray, especially when we don't have our own words.
Spiritual readiness isn't built in the battle—it's built in the ordinary, mundane, everyday moments beforehand. It's in reading, learning, and understanding God's word. It's learning memory verses by heart.
When my grandmother was near the end of her life, she had dementia. We read the Bible to her—the King James version with all its archaic language. Though she was losing her mind, she would read it back to us. Even though she didn't understand everything, she knew God's word in her heart because she had learned it over years. When everything else felt tough, she knew who she was and the preciousness of having God's word in her heart.
I want to be like my grandmother. I want to know God's word when I don't have it physically in front of me, when I can't read it myself—that it's in my heart and mind. Let's be a community and church that knows the Bible so well that we're able to use it to build others up, challenge lies, and seek truth.
If we want to know the words of God in the moments we need them, we need to learn them beforehand. Just as Aliyah has muscle memory when she picks up a bow, we too need that when we pick up God's word. In moments of spiritual attack or crisis, we know the passages to turn to. Are we equipped? Are we spiritually ready? There's no condemnation if you don't know scripture well, but there's a challenge for all of us: how well do we know the word of God?
In verses 19 to 23, we see that nobody built this wall alone. Everybody had a role to play. They stayed close together, looked out for each other, and remained alert together.

Be before God daily. What does it look like for you to spend time each day with God on your own and as part of a community? Do you know the voice of God? Do you know how he speaks to you? How are you listening to God, not just talking at him?
In community, we all need community. We were never made to do life alone. We need people around us to laugh with, cry with, and pray with. How can we look out for those who are vulnerable? How can we show grace and kindness? In our Wildfire community, there's a WhatsApp group called Wildfire Deliveroo where they hear the needs of someone in their community and rally around to support them—whether providing meals for new parents, blessing someone with what they need, or giving financial gifts. What does community look like where pride doesn't have a place and anyone can ask for support?
On mission, do we act, live, and talk in a way that is different from those around us who don't yet know Jesus? How are we praying for those who don't know Jesus? How are we sharing our faith? The Israelites weren't just building a wall for their own comfort—they were restoring the testimony of God's city to the nations around them. Sharing your faith and being in kingdom community isn't just a nice church project; it's a rescue mission for our city. Do we love our city? Do we love those people around us?
Most of us won't literally build a wall, but we're all building something: a family, a ministry, a life of integrity, a prayer life, a marriage, a witness at work, a future shaped by God. Whatever God is building, opposition will come.
My encouragement to you: don't stop building when things get tough. Know and understand God's word. Be ready to use it. Stay in community. Love one another. Serve one another. And keep going when it feels tough. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus and remind yourself he is bigger than the opposition. Build with one hand and hold the sword with the other.
