We've been journeying through the book of Nehemiah for several weeks. The story begins in Ezra, where the leader Zerubbabel rebuilds the temple, followed by Ezra—a scholar and teacher devoted to God's law—and then Nehemiah, called to rebuild the walls. Chapter 7 lists the community's leaders and families, but chapter 8 marks a dramatic shift: instead of a building project, we encounter a mass Bible study initiated not by a single leader, but by the entire community.
All the people assembled with unified purpose at the square just inside the Watergate. They asked Ezra the scribe to bring out the book of the law of Moses which the Lord had given for Israel to obey. (Nehemiah 8:1-2)
This unexpected change puzzled me at first. Why does this chapter differ so radically from what comes before? To understand, we must rewind to God's covenant with Abraham and the pattern of rebellion, consequences, repentance, and restoration that repeats throughout the Old Testament.
God's people ignored the covenant and were sent into exile. Yet even in exile, God spoke through the prophets. Consider this promise through Ezekiel:
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you. I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. (Ezekiel 36:26-27)
This prophecy solves the puzzle. The events of Nehemiah 8 occur because God kept His promise—He gave His people a new heart and activated the whole community to hunger for His word. Some prophecy is fulfilled once; other prophecy lands on multiple horizons. This one was fulfilled when the people returned from exile, and it continues to be fulfilled in us today.
When God brought His people back, His desire wasn't merely to complete building projects. His purpose was for people to worship Him in spirit and in truth, reestablishing the covenant not just through leaders but with the people themselves. This spiritual reawakening bubbled up from within the community.
Nehemiah 8 begins with God giving people a desire to know His word. But desire alone is fruitless without action. The people put significant effort into engaging with Scripture:
When Ezra opened the book, the people stood up:
Ezra praised the Lord, the great God. And all the people lifted their hands and responded, "Amen. Amen." Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. (Nehemiah 8:5-6)
They began with worship, then received God's word. This was a people coming back to their ordained purpose: to bear God's name and declare it as holy among the nations.
Ezra read to them the first five books of the Bible—the Torah. They heard God's promises to Abraham and his descendants, the redemption from Egypt, instructions about holiness and worship, God's guidance in the wilderness, and Moses' final words. In the original Hebrew, this takes about six and a half hours, which aligns with reading from daybreak until noon.
But the people didn't merely listen. They went deeper:
The priests instructed the people in the law. While the people were standing there, they read from the book of the law of God, making it clear and giving them meaning so the people understood what was being read. (Nehemiah 8:7-8)
Hearing God's word is good, but it's like trying to hold a Bible with your little finger—the weakest grip. We remember very little of what we merely hear, especially without taking notes. Many of us have forgotten what a sermon said by the next morning!
In this new season, we're encouraged to spend time before God daily in prayer and in His word. Whether through reading or audio Bible, the key is going to God's word for yourself. Daily Bible reading is like a regular meal for the soul. It's not someone else feeding you; you feed yourself.
Sometimes we encounter passages that don't fully make sense. We have choices: forget about it, disbelieve it, or lean in and dig deeper. All Scripture is God-breathed. We can't pick and choose which parts we agree with.
Bible study is like an archaeological dig—it takes time and effort, but the treasure is worth finding:
Tune your ears to wisdom. Concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver. Seek them like hidden treasures. (Proverbs 2:2-4)
You don't need qualifications to study Scripture. The preaching team works hard to ensure reliability, but we make mistakes. Especially with online sermons from unknown teachers, you must check that what you hear is true, just as the Bereans did:
The people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica. They listened eagerly to Paul's message. They searched the scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth. (Acts 17:11)
I know a wonderful group called the "Dinner Plus Pudding Plus Jesus" group—people from our accessible church service who meet fortnightly to study the Bible together. They don't have many qualifications, and some find reading difficult, but they love learning about Jesus. When they studied the story of Jesus walking on water, they concluded: when you're in trouble, you can pray; Jesus can do amazing things; He is very kind. Then they learned to pray for one another and ask Jesus to work amazing things in their lives.
We don't need to do this alone. We do it together with the Holy Spirit as our teacher:
The advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I've said to you. (John 14:26)
A couple of months ago, we were encouraged to memorize Scripture. I add my own encouragement: hide the word in your hearts. It really sticks. I recommend the Navigator resource, the topical memory system, as a way to get started.
For a Christian, meditation is not about emptying the mind but filling it with God's word. To meditate means to ponder, muse, and mutter. As we hear, read, study, and memorize Scripture, we need to be thinking about it and doing what it says.
The people of Nehemiah 8 did exactly this. Scripture told them it was time for a celebration, so:
They went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food, and to celebrate with great joy because they now understood the words that had been made known to them. (Nehemiah 8:12)
Nehemiah 8 is a call to deeper engagement with God's word, not just led from the front of church, but as a community. I believe God wants to awaken our country. One day we will see thousands turning to God. We need more laborers ready for that harvest. We can't rely on a handful of preachers who have studied the word. This is for every believer.
Just as Ezra devoted himself to studying and teaching God's law, we need to be able to teach others. The question God asks our congregation is: Are we hungry for His word? Are we calling out for insight and crying aloud for understanding as a community? Are we seeking those hidden treasures?
What would it look like if this were happening in our congregation and in our kingdom communities?
If you feel far from God—in exile, as it were—know this: He hasn't forgotten you. He brought you here today to hear His voice. No matter what you've done or how far away you are, He longs to welcome you back. God the Father sent Jesus to take the punishment for your rebellion. He wants to give you new life by His spirit. If that's you, please speak to someone here after we finish.
