We're in a season called Pause, where we're slowing down to dig deeper into God's Word. This summer, we're studying the parables of Jesus—and today we're looking at the Parable of the Talents, found in Matthew 25.
Before we dive in, let's understand what a parable is. The Greek word parabola means "to place alongside." Jesus would give an earthly story and place it beside a heavenly truth. Every parable invites us to ask: Which character am I?
This parable comes from Matthew 24-25, known as the Olivet Discourse. Jesus is on the Mount of Olives, only days away from the cross. The disciples had asked Him, "When will you return?" In response, Jesus gave three parables that answer one crucial question: How should we as God's people be living while we wait for His return?
The three parables are:
For it will be like a man going on a journey who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. (Matthew 25:14-15)
Here's something critical: this parable isn't primarily about stewardship—it's about participation. These servants weren't just managing money; they were invited to continue the work of the king while he was away.
We live in this exact season right now—between Christ's ascension and His return. The real question isn't "How much has God given me?" but rather "Am I participating in what God is doing until He comes?"
In the first century, a "servant" wasn't necessarily what we think of today. Many were household managers, estate administrators, and business managers—trusted representatives with tremendous authority. This context changes everything.
Also, a "talent" wasn't an ability; it was money—the largest monetary unit in Roman culture. Here's what will blow your mind:
Even the servant with one talent received an unbelievable gift. Yet what did he do? He buried it.
The king never transferred ownership; he transferred responsibility.
They were stewarding the master's money. This reminds me of a season in my life when my wife and I moved to Minnesota. We were in financial straits—24 maxed-out credit cards between us. I couldn't even buy groceries.
A friend offered us his 8,000-square-foot home on the lake, complete with two boats and a yacht club membership. I was living large on somebody else's resources. But you know what I did? We took that place and made it better than the way we received it. We painted it, landscaped it, cared for it as if it were our own.
When the owner visited and saw the transformation, he was blown away. He didn't even recognize it at first. Later, he told us, "Stay as long as you want. You don't have to pay a dime." But more importantly, because he saw how we stewarded what he'd entrusted to us, he became curious about why we treated it that way. That led to spiritual conversations that resulted in him giving his life to Christ.
This is the parable. The king never transferred ownership. He transferred responsibility.
The earth is the Lord's and everything in it, the world and all who live in it. For he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters. (Psalm 24:1-2)
Everything belongs to the Lord. Your kids, your marriage, your influence, your church, your business, your retirement—all of it is entrusted to you. Stewardship begins where ownership ends.
When eternity comes and Jesus returns, you won't be able to grab your stuff. What He has for you on the other side is far greater than anything here. It's not about stuff.
To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. (Matthew 25:15)
Notice: He didn't give equally, but He gave appropriately. God isn't unfair; He's wise. He knows your capacity because He made you.
Here's the problem: We limit our own capacity by allowing lies outside of God to determine what we can handle. We think our worth is in our job, our accomplishments. But our worth is determined by God. Because He determined it, He knows exactly what your capacity is.
Your capacity is much greater than you think. Remember: even one talent is 20 years of resources. What have you done with your life in the last 20 years? 40 years?
Our culture says more creates faithfulness. Jesus says faithfulness creates more.
If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won't be honest with greater responsibilities. (Luke 16:10-12)
This applies everywhere. If you drop something on the floor, pick it up. Why? Faithful in little things, faithful in much. If you're wondering why chaos or lack is showing up in your life, it might be because you're not stewaring the little opportunities.
I remember my first car—a beat-up beater someone gave me. But I took care of that car. I cleaned it, waxed it, painted it. I was faithful with the little. Then another opportunity came. Then another.
Later, I was walking in the Oklahoma heat as a college student. A stranger pulled up and offered me a ride. A few days later, the same person pulled over again and said, "Take the car. It's yours."
Faithfulness in the little creates room for more.
Comparing has buried more callings than failure ever has.
God doesn't compare servants; people do. Here's the truth: God never measures you against someone else's assignment. He measures you against your own faithfulness.
He who received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. (Matthew 25:16)
The servants didn't wait for instructions. They immediately went to work. Why? Because mature servants learn the heart of the master. That's real discipleship—not just following rules, but thinking like Jesus. Asking yourself: How would Jesus want me to live today until He comes again?
This is why Paul told us to have the mind of Christ. The servants didn't simply obey; they became like Him.
God is a multiplication God. In our marriages, we should multiply love. As parents, we multiply faith. In business, we multiply generosity. In church, we multiply disciples. As Christians, we multiply hope.
He didn't save you so you could just stay saved by yourself. There's a party in heaven waiting because of your influence on earth.
I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours. (Matthew 25:25)
Fear will always cause you to bury what God has given you.
Consider this: The three servants each received a measure—five, two, and one talent. Seeds are amazing, but if they stay in a jar or pocket, they're useless. But put them in dirt, and they multiply.
These things separately are just dirt and seeds. Put them together, and something happens.
For those of you who feel buried, who feel like life is smothering you: On the inside of you is potential. Don't allow the burying to make you think you'll die. A seed must be buried in the ground to multiply. Jesus was a seed that was buried—and look at the multiplication that happened!
The servant with one talent took it back to the earth. How many people die without ever releasing the potential God put inside them? The wealthiest place on the planet is the cemetery, because people never reached their fullest potential. They were given talents and died with them because they were afraid to release them.
We don't know when He's coming back, but we're going to have to give an account for everything He's given us.
He's either going to say, "Well done, good and faithful servant," or He won't. And you know what the reward is? The reward isn't a mansion. The reward is Jesus Himself. He says, "Enter into the joy of the Lord." He is the reward.
So let's steward until He comes. Let's be faithful. Let's participate with what God is doing. Let's multiply His kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.
