Called to Follow | Luke 11:1-13
Jesus had just finished praying when one of his disciples approached him with a request: "Lord, teach us to pray as John taught his disciples." This simple question reveals something profound about how we learn faith—we watch, we observe, and then we ask to participate.
The disciples had been watching Jesus withdraw to lonely places to pray. They saw him pray before major decisions. They witnessed prayer as a central rhythm of his life. And eventually, one of them said, "Lord, teach us to pray." Notice it wasn't a private request—it was communal. Prayer is personal, but it was never meant to be solely private. We are called to be a praying people.
Jesus responds by teaching them to pray to their Father—a radical concept at the time. In Jewish culture, addressing God so casually, so intimately, would have been shocking. Yet Jesus makes this clear: if you are in Christ, you are adopted. You are family. When you confess Christ as Lord, believe in his resurrection, and invite him to forgive your sins, you move from death to life—and simultaneously become a son or daughter of the Lord Most High.
This changes everything about prayer. You are not stuck in an automated voicemail loop trying to reach a real person. You are speaking to your Father.
Jesus then gives us five petitions to frame our desires when we pray:
1. "Hallowed be your name"
We are praying that others will recognize God for who he truly is. We're not asking God to make his name holy—God is holy, set apart. We're praying that more people would see him for who he is, that his name would be honored and set apart in this world.
2. "Your kingdom come"
This is twofold. We pray that Jesus would transform more lives, that more people in our families and communities would confess him, moving from death in sin to life in Christ. But we also cry out: wrap this thing up, Lord. End the pain, suffering, hurt, war, and injustice. "Anytime now, Lord. Your kingdom come. Send Jesus back."
3. "Give us each day our daily bread"
In Jesus's time, there was no Safeway, no 7-Eleven. People lived a day away from hunger. This petition recognizes a profound truth: everything we need each day ultimately comes from God. Even in abundance, even when we've forgotten what it means to go without, our provision flows from his hand.
4. "Forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us"
This is not about losing our salvation. When you confess Christ as Lord, your sins are forgiven—the Spirit indwells you, and the Father sees only the perfect righteousness of Christ. But those of us in Christ still sin. We need to ask for forgiveness, not out of fear of losing our standing, but because we want a good relationship with our Father. There's a difference between being married and being happily married. How we treat each other affects the quality of our relationship. When we repent quickly and forgive others as we've been forgiven, we maintain that closeness.
5. "Lead us not into temptation"
The word "temptation" can also be translated "testing." God never tempts us toward evil, but he does test us. We are on a journey to become more like Jesus, and that path is not always level. This is a prayer of humility: "Father, keep me from circumstances where I'll be overwhelmed and give in. Your testing is good, but I am weak. Keep me from spots where I'm liable to fall."
Here's the challenge: Jesus assumes these petitions reflect the desires of his disciples. Do they reflect ours?
It's easy to say you want God's name honored—until you throw around his name when you stub your toe. It's easy to claim you want his name set apart while living a life completely contrary to what he's called you to live.
Do you really want his kingdom to come? Are you sharing the gospel because you desperately want to see it? Are you convinced beyond shadow of doubt that nothing this earth offers compares to the joy unspeakable we'll have when he wraps this thing up and we spend eternity with him?
Do you recognize that he is the provider of all you enjoy? Far too many in our community suffer from food insecurity, but for many of us, we never think about going without. When we're hungry, we eat. If there's nothing in the fridge, we get a pizza. Do you realize all that abundance comes from him? Do you understand that even when you don't get what your peers have—that new car, that bonus—you still have much to be thankful for? You're waking up with breath in your lungs and food on your table, and he is giving you everything.
Do you recognize your need to forgive others as he has forgiven you? Or do you hold grudges while expecting him to let you off the hook?
If these petitions don't resonate with you yet, here's the good news: prayer is how Jesus does the work on our hearts. As we pray and are honest about our struggles, he transforms our desires to match his own. If these petitions don't resonate with you, maybe today is the day you begin to pray that they would.
Jesus then teaches us that prayer requires conviction—the confidence that we can bring whatever is on our heart to God.
He tells a parable: A traveler arrives late at night, unannounced. In that culture, you welcome him in and must feed him. But you have nothing. So you knock on your neighbor's door at midnight. "Friend, lend me three loaves. A friend of mine has arrived and I have nothing to set before him."
The neighbor refuses. "Don't bother me. The door is shut. My children are in bed. I can't get up."
But the one asking doesn't go away. And eventually, whether out of shame at what the community would say or out of respect for the asker's audacity, the neighbor gets up and gives him what he needs.
God welcomes our audacious requests. Not because we're so great or pray so well, but because he is a sovereign God of the universe with a name to protect. He will not ignore when one of his children is at the door.
You order something at a restaurant and expect the server to bring what you asked for. Yet somehow we think that he who did not spare his own Son is going to brush us off? Never.
Some of us pray believing we're interrupting God. He's busy. Our petty request is such an intrusion. Banish that thought. You are his child. You have been invited. Have confidence.
Jesus promises: "Ask and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find. Knock and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and the one who knocks, it will be opened."
Three verbs—ask, seek, knock—that indicate something ongoing. Not one and done. Be asking. Be seeking. Be knocking.
But here's where it gets tricky. In English, it sounds like Jesus is promising that whatever you ask for, you get. Whatever you seek, you find. Whatever door you knock on opens. This has caused pain in God's people because they can't reconcile not getting what they asked for.
But Jesus isn't being that binary. What he's promising is the certainty of God's response. The one who asks gets an answer—but the answer might be different than expected. The one who seeks will find something—maybe not what they were looking for. The one who knocks will have doors opened—maybe not the one they were standing in front of.
The point isn't that Jesus gives his children a blank check. The point is the certainty of God's response. He will get up and answer you.
Why pray if the answer isn't always what we want? Because we remember who we're talking to.
What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?
If imperfect dads know that when a kid asks for fishy crackers, you don't give them a live goldfish—if we know how to love our kids well in our sin—how much more will our perfect heavenly Father respond rightly to his beloved?
And here's what's remarkable: Jesus doesn't specifically promise every outcome we want. But he does promise his presence in greater quantities. That is the one thing we should always be praying for more of.
I have a son who required multiple surgeries. None were particularly fun. Had he asked me to avoid them, I would have said no—not because I wanted him to suffer, but because I loved him and wanted him better. We understand this with children in temporary pain, but we struggle when God seems uninterested in our perspective or goes in a completely different direction than what we're asking for.
Every week, some of you are in the thick of it. You're praying for something big. There's an answer you want. Maybe you've been praying for a long time.
Let us never forget: for those of us in Christ, all of us are his children. He knows that every pain, trial, and tear we shed right now has an expiration date. From his perspective, our worst is just temporary. He asks us to trust. This is why Jesus tells us not just to pray for answers, but for more of the Holy Spirit to sustain us while we wait.
