God Holds Our Future

We live in uncertain times. As we celebrate our nation's 250th anniversary, many of us wonder about the future—not just for ourselves, but for our country, our families, and generations to come. We scroll through our phones, listen to the news, and find ourselves pulled into worry about what's coming next. But Scripture offers us clarity in the midst of that uncertainty.

In Proverbs chapter 16, God speaks directly to our anxieties about the future. Three verses capture the heart of what God wants us to understand:

Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established. (Proverbs 16:3)

The heart of a man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. (Proverbs 16:9)

The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord. (Proverbs 16:33)

The message is clear and simple: God holds our future. Not leaders. Not global events. Not politics, arguments, stock markets, or trade agreements. Our future is determined by almighty God.

The Tension: Our Responsibility and God's Sovereignty

But here's where we face a tension. God is sovereign—He is ultimate, the supreme authority, and nothing can stand against His power. Yet we desire His favor. We want His blessing on our lives, our families, and our nation. So how do we experience the favor of God?

The answer lies in understanding that while we cannot control God's favor, we can position ourselves to receive it—or we can disqualify ourselves from it. We have a role to play.

Three Keys to Receiving God's Favor

There Is No Favor Without Prayer

God's promise in 2 Chronicles 7:14 begins with this: "If my people, who are called by my name, would humble themselves and pray..."

When we face concerns and worries about our nation, is our first response prayer? Too often, we jump on our phones and argue with someone. We try to change things through our own power and strength. But Scripture calls us first to humble ourselves—to recognize that we are nothing apart from God, and that the future we long for comes from His hand.

There will be no move of God, no healing in our land, no true return to Him if His church does not pray. The future of our country depends on God's favor being poured out on a praying people.

There Is No Favor Where There Is Sin

God's promise continues: "...and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and heal their land."

There's an important distinction here. All of us sin daily—we're imperfect people. But the sin being referred to is sin we hold onto, sin we refuse to release. God does not bless active sin.

So we must run from anything offensive to God: from pride to lust, from lies to the love of money, from anger to selfishness. We must recognize that every person is valuable to God—from the womb to the tomb—and guard against harming anyone.

But here's the good news: there is nothing you have done that is so far gone that God wouldn't heal you or forgive you if you would seek His face and turn from your wicked ways.

Living for Others

As we turn from sin in our own lives, we become like light in the darkness, helping others turn from their wicked ways. Here's the honest truth: we cannot control other people. You can't control your children, much less those who disagree with you politically or culturally.

But here's what you can do: you can live for others. Jesus has done so much for us that we have a responsibility to give ourselves away to others. Followers of Jesus set the pace of living for others.

Instead of becoming obsessed with controlling entire groups of people, share Jesus with one more until all have heard. When we live for one more person, we create a culture that impacts the many. This is how God works—not through our control, but through our faithful witness.

There Is No Favor Where There Is Idolatry

God's warning in 2 Chronicles 7:19 is stark: "But if you turn aside and forsake my statutes and my commandments...and go and serve other gods and worship them, then I will pluck you up from my land."

An idol is anything that captures our attention and devotion over God. It might be another religion, but for many of us, it's simply something in our lives that has taken God's place: entertainment, convenience, money, comfort, sex.

National Pride and the Idol of Country

On this 250th anniversary, we must be honest about something difficult: the United States itself can become an idol. There is great risk in putting our national pride higher in our hearts than our devotion to Jesus.

When the early church exploded in the Roman Empire after Jesus' resurrection, what made the Romans angriest wasn't the worship of Jesus—they had a pantheon of gods and would have gladly added one more. What made them angry was the gospel's claim that if you worship Jesus, you cannot bow to anything else.

We live in a culture that expects us to bow to its "little g gods." When we refuse, we will be hated. But we must not give in. We love and worship the one true God only.

Many of us may need to turn from placing our primary identity in patriotism rather than in Jesus. We can love our country and be grateful for it. But our ultimate allegiance belongs to Christ alone.

Moving Forward

As we look toward the future—the next 250 years and beyond—let us remember: God holds it in His hands. We position ourselves for His favor through prayer, through turning from sin, through living for others, and through refusing every idol but Jesus.

The question is not what will happen to America. The question is: Will we, as followers of Jesus, humble ourselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways so that He will heal our land?
