James concludes his letter not with theological abstractions, but with a practical blueprint for how believers live together. He calls us to turn to God in prayer as our first reflex, not our last resort.
Read James 5:13—
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.
James covers nearly every emotional season: suffering, joy, sickness, sin, drifting. And for each one, the answer is the same: pray.
When we suffer, our natural instinct is to run from God—to control, to complain, to fix it ourselves. When joy comes, we run to keep it, to take credit for it. But prayer requires something in us to die first: the illusion that we can carry suffering alone or produce joy alone.
True prayer is an act of admission. Every genuine prayer confesses: I need you, Lord. I cannot do this without your forgiving, empowering, and delivering grace. Prayer is not repetition or recitation—it is surrender.
As Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18—
Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
The mature Christian is not the one who has life under control. It is the one who is trusting God and seeking God. Every situation is an opportunity to worship. We have the privilege of entering the very presence of God Almighty, into the holy of holies, because of the blood of the Lamb. We can ask the God who created the universe. So we pray.
But James does not stop with private prayer. He moves the church into the room—calling believers to pray together.
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church. And let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. (James 5:14)
Notice: you don't suffer alone. You call others to pray with you. This requires the same attitude we described before—humble admission that we need the Lord and we need others. Isolation dies. Community begins.
The anointing with oil was medicinal in that context and symbolizes our trust that God will use all means—prayer and practical care—to bring healing. God hears our prayers and responds. We have seen believers healed of cancer when we cried out to the Lord. In other cases, the Lord took them home to heaven. In both, we trust his sovereign will.
In verse 15, James writes—
The prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
The "prayer of faith" does not mean praying without any doubt. It means believing prayer that trusts God's power and mercy while remaining submissive to his sovereign will. In Mark 9, a desperate father brings his demon-possessed son to Jesus and says, "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!" Jesus heals the boy. His honesty—I trust you, Lord, but I struggle; help me even in my struggle—is exactly the faith Jesus honors.
Even Paul struggled with this. Writing to the Corinthians, he describes praying three times for God to remove "a thorn in the flesh." God's answer was—
My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
Sometimes sickness becomes an instrument through which we bring glory to God and witness to his faithfulness. Keep coming to him in prayer.
Then James says—
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. (James 5:16)
Confession breaks isolation. Hidden sin grows. Exposed sin dies. David testifies to this in Psalm 32: when he kept silent about his sin, he almost died. When he confessed, he was healed.
James envisions a beautiful picture of the church: believers confess to trusted believers (not necessarily to a priest or pastor), and the righteous intercede. The church prays together. It is not a spectacle announced to the whole city—it is humble, honest vulnerability among God's family.
James illustrates this with Elijah—
Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain. And for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain. (James 5:17-18)
Every one thinks Elijah was extraordinary. He did not see death. He appears in the Transfiguration of Jesus with Moses. But Elijah was a real human being—discouraged, fearful, emotional. Even after the great miracle with the four hundred prophets, he said, "God, take my life. I'm done." Elijah went high and went down.
James's point: The power was not in Elijah; the power was in God. Elijah prayed to a God who is all-powerful, and God answered. The effectiveness of prayer depends not on the greatness of the person praying, but on the greatness of God to whom we pray.
Final point: James calls us to pursue those who are drifting away.
My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. (James 5:19-20)
James is not talking about unbelievers who have never known Christ. He is concerned about professing believers who are moving toward apostasy—whether by embracing false doctrine or by walking in sin.
No one wakes up one morning and declares, "I reject Jesus. I'm done." The danger is far more subtle. The process looks like this—
A wandering sheep does not find their way back home by themselves. Someone must pursue them.
The church has been discipled by society to embrace what I call Cain's mentality: "Am I my brother's keeper?" But in the church, we are each other's keepers. James calls us to adopt the attitude of a shepherd going after a lost sheep.
There are two extremes to avoid: indifference ("not my business") or spiritual policing (becoming the judge of everyone). But the church must not respond with indifference, gossip, or judgmental distance. Instead, we must pursue those who drift.
When someone begins to drift, the mature believer does not say, "That's their choice." The mature believer says, "That's my brother. That's my sister. I'm going after them." True love pursues and seeks to restore that which is being lost.
The church is not a concert you attend and then walk away. The church is a family—the body of Christ. We need each other. We need to pray for one another because we all need the Lord together.
We have been misdiscipled for decades into thinking the church is an event. That is not biblical. True community of faith does not watch people drift away—they go after them. They pursue them. They bring them back to the truth.
Whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
A multitude of sins can only be covered under the blood of Jesus. So we bring them back. We care for one another.
Fruitful faith continually turns to God in prayer and lovingly cares for one another.
A healthy, fruitful church is one where—
It is an active, beautiful, relational ecosystem. Personal faith leads to corporate faith, which brings faith that restores and rescues.
So church family, let us pray personally. Let us pray as a congregation. Let us care for one another. We need the Lord. Others need the Lord. And others will need us to help them find the Lord.
If you are here and you're not yet a Christian, know this: Jesus came to seek and save the lost. God loves you so much that he sent his only Son. Jesus came down from heaven to rescue you, to save you. He died on the cross to pay the penalty your sin deserves. He was raised from the dead, defeating death and sin. If you put your faith in Christ Jesus today, you will be saved. He will receive you, and he will give you life.
Come to Jesus. Put your faith in him.
