This morning, I want to talk about corporate worship—and I know the word "corporate" might bring to mind suits, ties, and tall glass buildings. But the root of the word actually comes from "corpus," meaning body. It's about something that involves all of its members, something shared together.
When we talk about corporate worship, we're talking about our gathered worship—how we praise and serve our God together. Now, worship is often unhelpfully used to describe just music and singing, but it's so much more than that. It's about a lifestyle, the whole of our lives given to glorifying God. At its heart is having a right priority, a right perspective about who matters most in our lives.
The world is full of worship, isn't it? We worship the England football team on a Saturday night, or at the gigs we go to, at the bar where we drink, at the food we eat. But none of these focus on the one who's truly worthy. That's what we're going to explore this morning through Psalm 95.
To help us navigate this psalm clearly, I'm going to use Rudyard Kipling's approach: "I keep six honest serving men. Their names are what and why and when and how and where and who."
King David wrote Psalm 95—the same David we know from the giant and lion-killing stories, probably the most famous worship leader in the Bible. He's writing to Israel, God's people. This psalm has been used by God's people and Christians for at least 2,000 to 3,000 years. It's been a staple of morning prayer in the temple, the early church, and the Book of Common Prayer.
The first half of the psalm is a call to worship. We see three times the word come—not a bashful, uncertain invitation, but a strong call: Stop what you're doing and come with us. There's also a repeated let us—a sense of togetherness and community.
There's a local sense: "Come to Gateway on Sunday. Be there at 10:00." But there's also a global sense, as we join with all who declare Him to be "the rock of our salvation." And even an eternal dimension—we join with the angels and saints who sing, "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain."
Come before him. Come into his presence.
This isn't about geographical places—it's about coming into God's personal space, before His throne. In David's time, the tabernacle and temple were strictly regulated; not everyone could enter the holy of holies. Yet here's the invitation: Come. There's a welcome, an urge, a sense of precious privilege.
Not everyone loves singing, but there are at least 185 songs in the Bible—from Moses through Jesus through Revelation. Music exists in every known people group and culture. It's a gift of God. When we sing, whether in church or anywhere else, it unites us. It engages our hearts, heads, bodies, and emotions—all of us at once.
There's a sense of exclamation, a sudden forceful utterance expressing strong emotion. In the world, we have our "ows" of pain and frustration. But we also need our "wows"—expressions of joy and awe at God's greatness. We're called to shout aloud with joy to the rock of our salvation.
To extol means to praise, glorify, and celebrate with enthusiasm and lavishness—admiration and delight for God.
Bowing shows honor and reverence. We're acknowledging His rule as King.
Kneeling is a posture of submission and surrender. We're saying, "He's in charge. He's the Lord."
The closest parallel is a family wedding—where people want to really let go and express their gladness. There's joy to this. I know it doesn't always feel comfortable, especially with British reservedness. But King David worshiped "with all his might"—not holding back, sweaty and tired and costly. Not afraid to look a bit silly. How much more does it honor the Lord when we express our praise with our full voices and physical bodies!
For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. In his hands are the depths of the earth. The mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it and his hands formed the dry land.
We worship because He is the Lord. He is the great God, the great King. Creation shouts His power, His rule, His reign, His goodness. There's nowhere and nothing that's not His. Everything is formed by His hands and remains under His direction, under His care. There is no other god that compares. He's matchless, unrivaled, incomparable.
C.S. Lewis noticed that delight in God is not complete until it's expressed and shared. Joy isn't full until you've shared it with somebody. We do this all the time: "Have you seen that movie? Have you heard this song?" The Bible does the same: "Taste and see that the Lord is good."
Not only is He the Creator of the heavens and earth, but:
Let us kneel before the Lord our maker.
He made you and me. Every human being. We're not accidents—we're significant. Psalm 139 says He knits us together in our mother's womb. We're made in His image so we can reflect something of Him to the world.
And for believers:
He is our God. We are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.
We belong to Him twice. We're made by Him, but we're also redeemed by Him. He created us, but He also saved us. The Israelites experienced this in the Exodus—God brought them through the plagues, delivered them from slavery in Egypt, parted the Red Sea, and provided in the wilderness. Ten times, God said through Moses, "Let my people go, so that they may worship me."
We know this same God revealed His goodness, faithfulness, and love in Jesus. Like the Israelites, He's saved us from death. He's broken the power of sin that enslaved us. He's washed us clean through His atoning death and provided everything we need for life to the full. We have the privilege of belonging, of sonship, of knowing we're loved. And unlike Israel, because of Jesus, we have the hope of eternal rest—of being with Him forever.
The second half of the psalm takes a turn:
Today, if only you would hear his voice. Do not harden your hearts.
Today. Now. Every day. Not yesterday's bread, not tomorrow's. This isn't just a Sunday thing. And God warns us: Don't harden your hearts as Israel did in the wilderness. They tested Him again and again, even though they'd lived through His salvation. They were people whose hearts went astray and did not know His ways.
We need hearts that are not hard when trouble and testing come. Israel fell away. They lost trust. They lost sight of who God is, of the why of worship. It's a real temptation for us even now, isn't it? We harden ourselves to protect ourselves from hurt, from being let down, from feeling pain.
Israel also neglected His word. They stopped listening. They weren't hearing His voice. They weren't meditating on the law of the Lord day and night. And they were forgetting—not remembering what God had already done. They'd walked free from Egypt, then forgotten all about it.
God is not after forced worship. He's not going to force Himself on us like the king of Babylon with his statue: "You bow down whether you like it or not." He's not after a bunch of fans either. This whole psalm is an invitation, not a summons. It's an open hand, an open hug: Come. Won't you come?
He's after relationship, not religion. He's looking for hearts that are soft and ears that are open.
There's one clue in the psalm:
Come before him with thanksgiving.
Gratitude is the attitude. We can choose to be thankful in all circumstances. Have you noticed how gratitude changes an atmosphere? Notice how our conversations—in the taxi, at the bus stop—often drift to moaning: "Awful weather. Seen the news? Terrible." That's where we find common ground.
But we're called to be people who say, "Oh, so thankful for today." It changes the attitude. It changes our hearts. It changes our approach and the way we think about things. Keep giving thanks for what God has done. He's kept His promises time and time again. His love is faithful and relentless. His grace is extravagant. We have eternal hope, no matter what happens in this life.
Don't neglect what He's done. Treasure His word as the gift it is. As Tim encouraged us from Psalm 1, it brings us revelation, comfort, and encouragement. It's the daily bread that Jesus talked about.
We think really carefully about the songs we sing here. We want them to remind our heads and hearts of what God has done and who He is. We want them to feed us with Scripture and stir us to worship Him, to love Him, to pour ourselves out.
The final wonder of all this is that as we do this, it changes us. It's forming, shaping, and healing us. As these words and songs and the Bible help us meditate on His law, truth enters our hearts and minds. Like Chris said in Psalm 2, as we worship the King, the Lord, the ruler, the judge, it shifts our perspective. It changes our worldview: He is the Lord. He is in control. He is worthy.
As we respond to the invitation to come, as we joyfully enter His presence because He's made a way for us to do that, as we sing and shout and allow our expression to come forth, God uses that to deepen your faith. He uses it to stabilize your identity. He uses it to build this community together. And possibly most wonderfully, He allows us to taste the eternal rest that's to come in His presence forever and ever and ever.
