William Shakespeare is arguably the writer with the biggest impact on the English language this country has ever seen. One scene from his play Macbeth has always stuck with me: Lady Macbeth's infamous sleepwalking scene.
Consumed by guilt after instigating the murder of King Duncan, Lady Macbeth sleepwalks onto the stage, scrubbing and scrubbing at her hands, desperately commanding imaginary blood to disappear. She cries out in despair, "Will these hands never be clean?"
It's a vivid, tangible picture of guilt and shame, and it resonates. We all know what it is to feel guilt for things we've thought, said, done, or left undone. Sometimes, even after days, weeks, months, or years of trying to move on, we still find ourselves asking the same question.
What do you do with your guilt?
Our culture and our natural inclinations tend to give us three options:
But none of it actually works. Research shows most people carry regrets through life and feel guilt regularly — it's part of being human. Psalm 51 gives us another answer entirely.
Psalm 51 was written by King David — one of God's people's greatest kings — but it comes out of one of the darkest moments of his life. After committing adultery with Bathsheba and arranging the death of her husband Uriah, David is confronted by the prophet Nathan and finally brought to repentance. This psalm is his response.
It shows us what God would have us do with our guilt: come clean, get clean, and live clean.
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love... For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight.
Coming clean looks like the exact opposite of balancing out, burying, or blaming our sin.
David is brutally honest — a plea for mercy based on God's love and compassion, not on anything he has done. He names his transgression (rebellion), his iniquity (crime, depravity), and his sin (the root of both — our failure to match God's holy standard, like an archer missing the mark entirely).
He doesn't try to make up for it. He simply says, "I can't fix this myself. I need help." He asks for his sin to be blotted out (struck from a judge's record), washed away (thoroughly laundered), and cleansed (purified, like smelting impurities from metal).
David's sin is always before him — he feels it deeply. He recognises that every sin against another person is first a sin against God. Sin leaves a mark; it has real, lasting consequences. Psalm 51 takes sin more seriously than we naturally do — it doesn't just wound others, it first breaks the heart of our heavenly Father.
As theologian Donald M. Williams says, "We all have a tendency to blame everyone and everything but ourselves. Finally, to admit, 'I did it,' is the first step to healing." David admits his sin comes from within him, not his circumstances. It isn't just something he's done — it's something he is.
Some of us don't feel the weight of this at all. Coming clean begins with seeing things as they really are — that there is a record, there is a judge, and our sin grows from a deep failure to match God's holy standard. Until we see that, we'll never come clean, because we won't think we need to.
Others of us know exactly this weight, and have been trying to deal with it ourselves. But coming clean means bringing it honestly to God and asking for mercy we don't deserve. It's exposing — but it's only when we stop trying to deal with our guilt ourselves that God begins to deal with it.
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow... Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
David has in mind God's Old Testament cleansing ceremonies — such as in Leviticus 14, where a house infected with defiling disease had to be ritually cleansed with a hyssop branch, or torn down completely if it couldn't be cleansed.
A modern equivalent might be a bed bug infestation. People who've endured it describe feeling dirty even in clean clothes — the problem is too deep for a quick fix. You need a full, multi-stage decontamination. That's the level of cleansing David prays for.```
But this raises a question: if there really is a record of sin, and a just judge, how can people like us ever be cleansed? God cannot simply overlook sin — that would be injustice. But he doesn't just give us what we deserve either.
He can only do this if someone else takes the guilt and pays the price it deserves — and that is exactly what happens at the cross.
Our Father's love was so deep that he sent his Son Jesus to take our sin upon himself — the whole record, the whole weight, the whole guilt — and bear the punishment in our place. As he died for us, his blood is poured out, washing and purging every part of us, forever.
Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain — he washed it white as snow.
God doesn't stop at cleansing. David also prays for a renewed, steadfast spirit and the ongoing presence of the Holy Spirit. Our Father wants to work in our hearts, to make sin less attractive and obedience more possible, restoring us to "the joy of cleansing and the health of repentance."
If you're not convinced you need this kind of cleansing, look at what it cost God to deal with sin — not a light scrub, but the cross, the Son of God bearing judgment in our place. That tells you the size of the problem. The question isn't "can I manage this myself" — you can't. The question is: will you come clean and get cleaned by Jesus?
If you already feel the weight of your guilt, here is good news: we don't need to keep carrying what Jesus has already carried for us. The record is blotted out completely — every letter, every dot. We are free to enjoy renewed salvation joy.
Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you... My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.
None of what follows earns the right to be washed clean. But because we have been made clean by Jesus' death, living clean is the natural response of a cleansed heart. It moves in two directions: outward, in proclamation, and upward, in devotion.
David's whole posture changes from introspective to outward-facing — he wants to tell people who God is and what he has done. Forgiven people point others to the cleansing they themselves have received.
What is one way this week you could be a speaking person — at church, at Connect Group, in another ministry, or at work — pointing others to Jesus and praising him for what he has done?
In verse 16, God doesn't delight in mere religious sacrifice — going through the motions, or trying to balance out sin with religious effort. He wants you, not what you can do for him. He will not turn away a broken and contrite heart — a heart that knows how little it deserves and how much it has received.
Once he has that devotion, then — as in verses 18–19 — worship and service become truly pleasing to him. It's not performing for God, but belonging to him, and offering your life from that place.
We started with Lady Macbeth scrubbing and scrubbing, asking, "Will these hands never be clean?" Psalm 51 gives us the answer: not by balancing it out, not by burying it, not by blaming someone else — but by coming clean, getting cleaned, and living clean.
Because our heavenly Father loved us enough to send his Son, the answer to Lady Macbeth's question is not no — it's yes. These hands can be made clean completely, deep down, whiter than snow.
As we come to the Lord's table, the question is simple: what will you do with your guilt? Will you keep hiding, keep carrying it, keep trying to deal with it yourself? Or will you come clean before God and receive the cleansing that Jesus offers?
This meal is not for people who have it all together. It is for people who have come clean and are trusting in Christ to make them clean. So come now — stop hiding, come clean, get clean, and come bringing nothing and receiving everything.
