Let's Be Honest
There is a big difference between a report card and a birth certificate. A report card keeps score. It evaluates your progress, tells you whether you passed or failed, and every mark on the page carries a deeper question underneath it: Are you enough? Have you done enough? Will you be enough?
A birth certificate is completely different. It doesn't keep score—it reveals a status that is secured and unalterable. You didn't earn the name on it; you were given it. You didn't perform your way into your identity; you were born into it.
A report card tells you how you did. A birth certificate tells you who you are.
This distinction frames our conversation today, because Islam and Christianity approach the same question—what is my standing with God?—in very different ways. One system is built on your work in life. The other, Christianity, is built on Jesus' work before you were ever born.
I grew up understanding report cards all too well. My childhood wasn't stable or safe, and on top of that I battled severe dyslexia and a debilitating stutter. Report cards were regular reminders that no matter how hard I tried, I was falling further behind. I'd wait by the mailbox trying to intercept them before anyone else could see—not to hide them forever, just to buy time before the inevitable judgment. I was trying as hard as I could, knowing my best effort would never be enough.
That feeling—the desperation to perform, the fear that it's not going to be good enough—is, on some level, what many followers of Islam wrestle with. Not because Islam is cruel, but because of how the system is structured.
Islam means submission—specifically, submission toward the path of peace. It offers something refreshing in our moment: clarity. There's no guessing what God wants from you. Most Muslims follow five specific obligations, the Five Pillars:
These are not suggestions—they are obligations. They are, in effect, a Muslim's report card: the score being kept on their account for eternity.
I respect the clarity this system offers. But there's a tension: you can do all of this and still not know if it's enough. On the Day of Judgment, God places your good deeds on one side of a scale and your bad deeds on the other. If good outweighs bad, you enter paradise. If not, you face judgment. But you don't know how the scales will tip until that day arrives.
Even Muhammad, in his own writings, expressed uncertainty about what the day of judgment would hold for him. The Quran is clear that salvation ultimately belongs to Allah alone. You can pray five times a day, fast, give, go on pilgrimage—and at the end of a life dedicated to this pursuit, you still don't fully know if you're in.
Before Christians judge their Muslim neighbor too quickly, though—many of us live under this same system without calling it that. We say Jesus is important, but functionally we're still asking, do my good works outweigh my bad works? That mindset is far more Islamic than Christian. We're keeping score too; we're just doing it inside a Christian framework.
The Psalms speak to this universal human problem. The writer of Psalm 130 says:
"If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?"
The psalmist assumes no one would measure up if God kept an exclusive record. That pressure of not measuring up is universal—but it can be reconciled not by what we do, but by the grace of Jesus on our behalf.
Early in my ministry, I was on an interfaith panel on world religions, not long after 9/11, when cultural wounds were still fresh. The Muslim panelist was kind, thoughtful, educated, and clearly a person of deep personal faith. Afterward, in the hallway, I asked how he was doing amid so much confusion and judgment.
He admitted he was scared all the time—on airplanes, in stores—because he knew strangers around him were afraid of him while he was afraid of them. His fear didn't surprise me. His kindness did. Despite carrying so much weight, he remained caring and respectful. We listened to one another, hoping to find common ground.
Islam and Christianity both take scripture seriously—they just understand it differently. Islam holds to progressive revelation: God reveals himself in stages, and each new stage corrects and completes what came before. The Torah and the Prophets are seen as God's word, but incomplete or corrupted over time. The Quran, believed to be recited directly by Muhammad as the words of Allah, is considered the final, perfect, and superseding revelation.
Christians read Scripture differently. We read the Old Testament anticipating Jesus, and the New Testament recognizing that he has already come—understanding, per Hebrews, that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Take the doctrine of God's oneness. Muslims point to Deuteronomy 6: "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one." They take this as clear evidence of strict monotheism. But in the original Hebrew, the passage uses three different words for God—suggesting, from a Christian view, that God is three in one: the Trinity. Muslims would say a text like John 1:1, which calls Jesus "the Word" who "was God," reflects later corruption of the original message. Christians would say it reveals what was there all along.
The same divergence appears in how each faith reads the story of Abraham. Muslims believe it was Ishmael, not Isaac, whom Abraham was called to sacrifice. Christians see Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son as a foreshadowing of God the Father sacrificing his Son, Jesus. Same story, same father—completely different interpretation, shaped by each faith's starting assumptions about revelation.
Everything comes down to how each faith understands Jesus. In John 14:6, Jesus says:
"I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
Christians take that as unambiguous: there is only one path to God. Christianity's central claim is that it is the most inclusive exclusive faith in the world—it's the only way, and it's available to everyone, every day.
Muslims revere Jesus deeply—some even believe he was the only person without sin—but they reject his divinity and his resurrection. Yet those are the very things that change everything for the follower of Jesus. Jesus isn't offering a manual or a checklist; he's offering himself. He has already lived the life we couldn't live and satisfied the judgment we could never survive.
Jesus takes your failing—or at best incomplete—report card and trades it for his perfect and permanent one.
Years ago, my sister-in-law was filling out my niece's birth certificate and didn't realize a letter in our last name was capitalized. My brother pointed it out, and she corrected it. In that moment, she realized her name had always been spelled that way—she just hadn't known it. A birth certificate doesn't change your identity; it reveals it.
Christianity works the same way. You don't become a Christian by performing well. You become a child of God when you acknowledge your inability to meet God's standard—and receive, by his love, the righteousness Jesus offers in your place.
When your place in the family is secure, submission looks completely different. It's no longer about earning belonging—it's living from an identity already given. That doesn't mean we do whatever we want; it means our obedience flows from love, not fear.
I respect Muslims who find in Islam a system that offers real clarity for life and faith. For many, considering another faith—especially Christianity—isn't just a theological shift; it can mean the loss of family and community. That cost is real, and I don't take it lightly.
I also want to be clear: I would not want anyone to judge my faith by its worst, most extreme expression, and it would be unfair to do that to Islam. The vast majority of the world's 1.8 billion Muslims condemn terrorism and violence. According to Pew Research, less than 5% of Muslims globally hold favorable views of groups like Al-Qaeda. Judging all Muslims by that fraction is no different than judging all Christians by the Westboro Baptist Church or abortion clinic bombers. It's not intellectually honest—it's a caricature.//
The answer, always, is the gospel: salvation—a restored relationship with God, now and forever—comes by grace, God's undeserved favor, through faith, believing even when we cannot see, in Christ alone and the finished work he has done. It is not earned; it is given.
God, knowing we would fall short, sent his Son to live, die, and rise again so we could know him—starting right now.
Just as there are different expressions of Christianity, there are different expressions of Islam—from cultural Muslims with heritage but little active practice, to Sunni (roughly 80–90% of Muslims worldwide), Shia, Sufi mysticism, and the more stringent Salafi tradition. These differences shape how people live out their faith, sometimes shaped by Sharia law in Islamic-ruled nations, very differently from how Muslims in the West might practice day to day.
A good question to ask a Muslim friend or neighbor is simply: "How do you practice your faith?" It opens the door to real conversation about their story, family, and heritage—rather than assuming the version of Islam seen in headlines represents every Muslim you know.
If you were to stand before God today and you call yourself Muslim, how confident are you—on a scale of 1 to 10—that you would enter paradise? If you say 10, you've ranked your confidence higher than Muhammad himself expressed about his own standing.
If you're a follower of Jesus and you understand the gospel, that same question isn't answered with arrogance but with humble certainty: the answer is always 10—not because of anything in you, but because of him.
I don't believe Jesus is asking anyone to give up who they are. I believe he's inviting each person to live into who they were truly made to be—adopted into his family, not because we are smart enough or good enough, but because God is great, and his love reaches out to meet us where we are.
