When a man or woman of God doesn't obey God, that's big news. Anyone who walks away from God is always going down. God disciplines his children. God puts us on time-outs. No one—not Moses, not the most celebrated Christian leader of our time—is exempt from God's discipline.
There's a journalism principle that says: "When a dog bites a man, that's not news. But when a man bites a dog, that's news." Applied to Jonah, it becomes: "When a man catches a fish, that's not news. But when a fish catches a man, that's news."
Some struggle to believe this story actually happened. How could someone survive three days and three nights inside a fish? But consider this: If God could make a man from nothing, and if God could make a fish from nothing, don't you believe God can prepare a great fish to swallow a man and keep him alive for three days and three nights? When you bring God into it, it's not unbelievable at all.
Jonah isn't a thief or adulterer. His sin is rebellion—robbing God of obedience and loyalty. And God won't tolerate that.
Notice who is behind every action:
This isn't just indigestion—this is God's direct action. God disciplines nations, God disciplines his people Israel, and God disciplines individuals. Even Moses—mighty Moses—was excluded from the promised land because of one act of disobedience after leading millions of people through the desert for 40 years.
Jonah chose a downward trajectory. Chapter 1 shows him going down to Joppa, down into the ship, down into the belly of the ship. In Chapter 2, God takes him as far down as one can possibly get on this planet—to the very bottom of the Mediterranean seabed. But this is purposeful time out for reflection.
God disciplines his children to grow us, to prune us, to purify us, to direct and redirect us, to align us to him. His discipline might feel harsh and uncomfortable, but if you're a child of God, it's always motivated by love.
Consider how parents understand this. We discipline our children because we love them and want them to grow into wonderful members of our families and society. God does the same.
"Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you." (Deuteronomy 8:5)
"My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline and do not resent his rebuke because the Lord disciplines those he loves as a father the son he delights in." (Proverbs 3:11-12)
"Endure hardship as discipline. God is treating you as his children, for what children are not disciplined by their father? God disciplines us for our good that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it." (Hebrews 12)
Application: Take God's correction daily. Embrace his time-outs in your life. While you're sitting there reflecting, don't waste the opportunity to return from your waywardness. Repent of known sin. Don't be foolish.
Proverbs 12:1 says, "Whoever hates discipline is stupid." It's not rudeness; it's a word that means acting irrationally, like a wild beast that cannot be helped. We've all seen "Welcome back, stupid" signs in our lives. Take God's rebuke. Swallow your pride, humble yourself, and walk the path of life.
You can talk to God knowing that he actually listens to you. Despite everything going on in the world, despite all his responsibilities, despite all the people on the globe—God listens to you.
"Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the fish, and he said, 'I called out to the Lord from my distress, and he answered me. From the belly of Sheol I cried out for help, and you heard my prayer.'" (Jonah 2:1-2)
"When my life was ebbing away, I called out to the Lord, and my prayer came to you, to your holy temple." (Jonah 2:7)
Jonah knew that talking to God meant something remarkable was happening—because God listens. Jesus himself tells us to ask, seek, and knock. He taught us to pray, "Our Father who art in heaven." Throughout the New Testament, we're commanded to pray constantly: "Pray without ceasing. In every situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
We can approach God's throne of grace with confidence in Christ. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. This isn't wishful thinking. God has revealed himself as attentive to the prayers of his people.
Martin Luther said, "I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer." Billy Graham, when asked what makes an evangelistic crusade successful, answered: "Number one, prayer. Number two, prayer. Number three, prayer."
Prayer is a golden bridge, a ferry boat, a chariot to convey your soul into more intimate communion with God. George Müller, an evangelist known for caring for 10,000 orphans in England over decades, once faced a morning with 300 hungry orphans and no food. He had them all dress and sit at tables with empty plates. Then he prayed. Before long, the local baker knocked on the door—he couldn't sleep and knew Müller would need bread. Then a milkman arrived; his cart had broken down outside the orphanage, and the milk would spoil. God listens to the prayers of those who truly turn to him.
Application: Talk to God daily. Commune with him through prayer, confident that he listens. God wants to hear what's on your heart. Bring it to him and articulate it, knowing he hears you.
God wants to rescue. God is for you. God is for humanity, not against it. But God is not for sin and rebellion. God will do whatever it takes to discipline you and bring you back to him.
Jonah's declaration in Chapter 2 makes this clear:
"Those who worship worthless idols forfeit the mercy that could be theirs. But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration of praise. I will surely do what I have promised. Salvation belongs to the Lord." (Jonah 2:8-9)
Then comes the demonstration:
"Then the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah out onto dry land." (Jonah 2:10)
This is a "but God" moment. Joseph's brothers intended evil against him, but God intended it for good. We were deserving of wrath, but God, rich in mercy, made us alive in Christ. Jonah has a similar moment: "But you, oh Lord my God, brought me up from the pit."
Who owns salvation? God owns salvation. Only God is capable of manifesting salvation. God owns the salvation of the Israelites, the Ninevites, Americans, Scots-Irish, Iranians—all peoples. Salvation is his.
It's easy to forget this truth in daily life. A legacy preacher had to spend three days in a fish's belly to remember that salvation belongs to the Lord, not to human achievement.
Application: Live this week in gratitude. Thank God daily for his salvation. Jonah wrote a thank-you card to God in this psalm. We should do the same every day.

All of these are beautiful expressions of gratitude and worship in light of his salvation, but none grant salvation. Only God grants salvation through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Anything else is clinging to worthless idols, forfeiting the mercy that could be yours.
Don't let that be you. Jonah remembered inside the fish's belly, and he was grateful. God had that fish spit him out onto a beach—better than the alternative. Amazing grace.
The sovereign God grants opportunities to return to him all the time. Take them before his discipline intensifies. God is a God of second chances.

And in Jonah's life and in our lives, God will do whatever it takes to put his children back on the right path with him.
