If you've read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, you'll remember Edmund Pevensie, one of the four children who enters the magical land of Narnia. Narnia at that time is cold and dark, under the rule of the White Witch — always winter, but never Christmas.
Edmund makes a terrible choice. Early in the story, he betrays his brothers and sisters to the White Witch for a box of Turkish Delight — not exactly a fair trade. He chooses himself over his family and sides with the enemy. But the sweetness soon turns sour. The witch uses him, then discards him, casting him into a dark dungeon.
Edmund is left ashamed, guilty, and feeling unworthy. Even after he's reunited with his family, that shame doesn't disappear. The Narnians look down on him as a traitor, and there's friction within his family. He has a guilty conscience that needs to be washed clean.
I think many of us have been in that situation. We all know our failures — the thoughts, words, and actions we wouldn't want anyone else to know about. Sometimes we wonder: if people really knew me, would they still love me? More importantly: could God, who knows everything about me, really love me knowing all the bad things I've done and said?
When confronted with our sin, it is so easy to feel condemned and ashamed. As we've worked through Zephaniah, we've been exposed again and again to our pride, our ego, and everything that tempts us to rebel against God. Rather than sin driving us to Jesus, we can be driven away, feeling like God could never love us — feeling like Edmund, ashamed, guilty, and unworthy.//
The good news of Zephaniah is not only that God can love you — it shows us that God's love and delight is far greater than we could ever imagine. Chapter 3 of Zephaniah is one of the most intimate expressions of God's love for us in the whole Bible. This morning we'll be reminded of three things:
In the last few weeks we've seen the problem facing Judah: judgment for idolatry and injustice. They've gone after the idols of their own hearts and failed to uphold God's law to love God and neighbour. But now in these verses we see salvation — God's glorious restoration of His people through judgment.
On the great day of the Lord, He will purify His people — but not just Judah. Look at verse 9:
"Then I will purify the lips of the peoples, that all of them may call on the name of the Lord and serve him shoulder to shoulder."
The speech of the peoples of the earth becomes pure — a metaphor for spiritual cleansing. Every tongue shall confess Jesus is Lord. And which Gentile nation is held up as the prime example? Cush. Chapter by chapter, Cush has been an example of how the nations have gone astray — but now they become an example of God's reconciliation to the nations.//
Zephaniah had a direct connection to Cush through his father, who was part Cushite. The nation struck down in chapter 2 is restored in chapter 3. The land that is the source of the Nile is now the source of worship.
There's something remarkable hiding in these verses. In verse 9, the nations are given purified speech to call on the Lord together. In verse 10, worshippers from Cush are described as God's "dispersed ones" — a phrase almost always used elsewhere for Judah's exiles in Babylon. Here, surprisingly, it's used of Gentiles.
Where else does God disperse the nations? At the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11, where humanity united in pride to exalt itself against the Lord — and God judged them by scattering them with a confusion of languages.
Here, the curse of Babel is reversed. The nations are united in worship with one pure speech. And who led the Babel project? Nimrod — whose name means "hunter" and "rebel," the great-grandson of Noah and the son of Cush. Through a Cushite came the dispersion of the nations at Babel; now through the lips of a Cushite prophet, God promises to gather the nations back into one pure speech. It has come full circle for the line of Cush.//
One pure speech doesn't mean all languages become identical — it means languages are purified because they now worship the Lord together, shoulder to shoulder. We see this fulfilled at Pentecost, and again in Revelation 7, where an innumerable multitude from every tribe, tongue, and nation worships the risen Lamb, clothed in white, purified by His blood.
These verses are fulfilled now, in the church — Jew and Gentile united with pure speech. Lips that don't tear each other down but edify; lips that speak Jesus to one another rather than cursing. This is how our speech in our church family should look.
The Lord will also purify our behaviour. In verses 11–13, Zephaniah describes how Judah will no longer practice injustice. This is sanctification — the process by which God makes His people more and more like Him, through the Holy Spirit.
The spiritual reformation we need is not something we do, but something God does. He removes our pride and makes us know our need. Only the remnant — those who trust in the Lord — remain.
This is relevant for us too. Because of Jesus, we have already been purified, made clean in His blood. That's good news for those of us with tender consciences who see our weakness day by day and wonder how the Lord could ever love a sinner like us.//
If you are tired of struggling with sin, know that the Lord God is not finished with you. He will not leave you as you are.
By His blood you are forgiven; by His Spirit you are being changed day by day to be more like Him. As Paul says, "He who began a good work in you will carry it out to completion." God is the one doing the work, and He will finish what He starts.
Look at the end of verse 12: the remnant will trust in the Lord, do no wrong, tell no lies, and "eat and lie down, and no one will make them afraid." The threat from outside — from enemy nations — is removed. But so is the threat from within our own hearts: the accusation that God doesn't love us, that we have no peace with Him. When we look to the cross, we have no reason to fear.
Look at verses 14–15:
"Sing, daughter of Zion. Shout aloud, Israel. Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem. The Lord has taken away your punishment. He has turned back your enemy. The Lord, the king of Israel, is with you. Never again will you fear any harm."
Judah is told to sing because judgment is undone — but there's more. Not only is judgment removed, but God Himself, the King, is present with them. The same warrior king who stood with His arm outstretched against them now dwells in their midst, giving safety and security.//
God's people don't need to be faint or feeble, scared that the Lord is with them. He is not waiting to catch them out — He is not like an angry parent who lashes out at any minor infraction. He wants you to feel safe in His presence.
If you're a follower of Jesus, you are never an object of His anger or disappointment. You are an object of His affection.//
That brings us to verse 17 — one of the most remarkable verses in the whole Bible:
"The Lord your God is with you, the mighty warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you. In his love, he will quieten you. With joy, he will rejoice over you with singing."
When you feel unlovable or weak, let this verse be the antidote to your fear and shame. If you trust in the Lord Jesus, God looks at you filled with delight and joy — He sings over you. It's an image of deep parental love. As John writes, to all who receive Him and believe in His name, He gives the right to become children of God. If you trust in Jesus, that is your birthright.
Don't believe the lie that the Lord doesn't love you. If you're a parent, think back to the moment you first saw your newborn son or daughter. Hold on to that feeling — because it's only a minuscule fraction of the delight the Lord has for you.
Think about approaching someone important — say, the Oval Office under JFK, where procedure mattered enormously; life-and-death decisions were made there. To meet the president, you needed the right credentials and a booked appointment.
But during JFK's presidency, people noticed this procedure was sometimes completely disregarded — someone would run in half-dressed and jump onto the president's lap or under his desk, and no one did anything. That interruption was his son, JFK Jr. He had unfettered access. He never called the president "Mr President" — just "Dad." He knew he was loved not because he was specially lovable or had done anything to deserve it, but simply because he was the president's son.//
Our status as children of God matters when we struggle to feel lovable. We are loved not because we're lovable in ourselves, but because in Jesus we are His children — and that's enough. We have unfettered access to God 24/7. We don't come as begging servants hoping He might grant a request — we come boldly as sons and daughters, knowing our Father delights to speak with us.
Verse 17 says more than "the Lord doesn't rebuke you" (as some translations put it) — it says He will quiet you by his love. It's like a parent quieting a distressed child who is crying so hard they can barely breathe, saying, "Shh, shh, it's fine. I'm here. I love you. Everything's going to be fine."//
Maybe this week you've felt like that child. In this verse, the Lord Himself comes to quiet you: Weary child, don't you worry. I love you, and I delight in you.
The Christian life is not to be endured, but to be enjoyed. Having Christ as our Saviour should not make us dour or cynical, but joyful. If the Lord Himself is singing over us, how could we not sing aloud with joy?
But remember — it's addressed to God's people specifically. Zephaniah reminds us that if we want to enjoy the delight of God's love, we need to belong to Jesus. His love reaches a great breadth — beyond the rivers of Cush — but it is also specific: only those who call upon the name of the Lord are objects of His affection. If you haven't trusted in Jesus, call upon Him now. He will purify you by His precious blood and quieten your weary soul with His love.
Read verses 18–20 together:
"I will remove from you all who mourn over the loss of your appointed festivals... At that time I will deal with all those who oppressed you. I will rescue the lame. I will gather the exiles. I will give them praise and honor in every land where they suffered shame... when I restore your fortunes before your very eyes, says the Lord."
Notice the promises: I will restore. I will gather. I will bring you home. The Lord is determined to bless and restore His people's fortunes. Those who had their cities wiped out now have their homes restored. Those who were ashamed are given honour. The outcasts are gathered in. Judgment is not the final word for Judah — and it's not the final word for us.//
This restoration is not vague or symbolic — verse 20 says it will be before your very eyes. We see it at the cross: guilty sinners become pardoned, beloved children. And it means that every bad thing in your life will one day be reversed.
When Christ Jesus returns, every consequence of sin and evil will be undone. Every injustice will be set right. Every sorrow will be healed. Every tear will be wiped from every eye. All the trials, heartaches, and losses that make you feel unlovable — on that day you will know it was worth it, because the Lord Jesus will say to you personally, "Well done, good and faithful servant... My beloved child, stop crying. Let me give you rest. I will restore your fortunes before your very eyes."
Returning to Edmund's story: in the midst of his shame and guilt, Aslan intervenes. He rescues Edmund from judgment, taking his place, and Edmund is restored — his shame removed, his guilty conscience cleansed.
But it goes further. Edmund isn't left carrying that shame as a cautionary tale. By the end of the story, he is crowned alongside his brothers and sisters. The traitor becomes a king — King Edmund the Just — exalted, delighting in the position he's been given because of Aslan's sacrifice.//
All of us who have trusted in the Lord Jesus are in that position. We are sons and daughters of the King. Today, God's people have been humbled by sin time and again, feeling disgraced and small. But now we can enjoy being exalted as children, delighting in eternity with our God.
God's judgment always ends in deliverance for His people. Our God loves to save sinners rather than condemn them. He delights to love you — and we can know we are worthy of His love because of Jesus, and no one else. Jesus has taken our judgment and our shame, and because of Him, we have been restored.
When your conscience accuses you, when your sins seem so great that nothing could ever atone, and you feel like you could never really be loved by God — look to the cross, look to Jesus. The cross is God's answer for every doubt you have.
In Jesus, God gives us His only Son to make us — natural wretches — His beloved treasure. If you aren't a Christian here this morning and want to know the love of God, come to Jesus. He will make you a son or daughter, an object of His singing. He will purify every sin and save you from the coming judgment. You need never fear the Lord again — you will only ever know Him as your loving Father. On the great day of the Lord, you will discover that His love for you was greater than you ever dared believe.
