Good morning, church family! What an incredible day to gather together on July 5th. Yesterday we celebrated Independence Day—our freedom as a nation. But today, I want to talk about a different kind of freedom: the spiritual freedom that Jesus offers to every one of us.
Before we dive in, I want to honor those who have served in our military. If you've served or are currently active, would you please stand? Thank you for your sacrifice and service. You've given us the privilege of living in freedom and even the freedom to preach the gospel without persecution. We are deeply grateful.
Today we're continuing our series in the Book of Mark. If you've never been to church before or never read the Bible, let me give you some context. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are the four historical eyewitness accounts of the life of Jesus. In Mark 5, Jesus is traveling from town to town, demonstrating that he is the Savior of the world—the Messiah, the Son of God.
Let me read Mark 5:1-12 with you:
They arrived at the other side of the lake in the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil spirit came out from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained, even with a chain. Whenever he was put into chains and shackles, as he often was, he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Day and night, he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones.
When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him. With a shriek, the man screamed, "Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don't torture me." For Jesus had already said to the spirit, "Come out of this man, you evil spirit."
Then Jesus demanded, "What is your name?" And he replied, "My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man." Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place. There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby. "Send us into those pigs," the spirits begged. "Let us enter them." So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of this man and entered the pigs. And the entire herd of about 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water.
Here's what strikes me about this story: This man couldn't be physically chained. No shackles could hold him. But he was bound by spiritual chains—oppressive spirits that had taken over his mind and consumed his very being.
I believe many of us today are walking in spiritual chains too. We may not have visible shackles, but we're carrying heavy burdens that we've grown accustomed to. The message of today is simple: These chains won't hold me down.
Let me tell you my story. As a seven-year-old, I was obsessed with chains—not spiritual ones, but actual fashion chains! I'd buy them at the mall, wear them so heavy my neck hurt. I was just a kid going through phases. But when I was nineteen, I found myself bound to chains of a very different kind: addiction, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts.
I remember thinking at nineteen, "My future is hopeless. I'll never escape this bondage." And here's what breaks my heart: We celebrate the Fourth of July and our national freedom, but then we come to church the very next day and don't believe that Jesus offers freedom for us. We settle. We settle for lust, addiction, a victim mentality, insecurity. We tell ourselves, "This is just how I am."
But God has a better life for you. Jesus wants to break your chains.
In Mark 5:9-12, Jesus asks the demon, "What is your name?" The reply comes back: "My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man."
The word "Legion" referred to a Roman army—approximately 5,000 to 6,000 soldiers. So this man wasn't oppressed by one demon or two, but by thousands of demonic forces.
Now, spiritual oppression doesn't always look like demon possession. It can show up as:
Here's the thing about chains: At first, they hurt. You feel the weight on your shoulders. But over time, we get so used to carrying them that we start to accessorize them. We make them part of our identity. "This is just who I am. This is my story. I might as well make peace with it."
But that's a lie from the enemy. The power of Jesus is greater than the power of Satan over your life.
Look at what happens: Jesus speaks, and the spirits leave immediately. The demons flee. In Philippians 2:10, the Bible tells us:
At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow—in heaven, on earth, and below.
That means no spiritual attack has any hold on you when you speak the name of Jesus. When you call on Jesus, demons tremble. They obey. They flee.
Jesus doesn't say, "Maybe someday in heaven you'll be free." No! Freedom is available for you today. God has a plan and a purpose for your life right now. Not in the distant future—today.
We need to be a people who understand that when Jesus speaks, demons flee. We need to know this in our bones.
After the encounter with Jesus, look at Mark 5:15:
A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by legions of demons. He was sitting there, fully clothed and perfectly sane. And they were all afraid.
Fully clothed. Perfectly sane. There was a tangible transformation. This wasn't just emotional or spiritual—it was visible, real, undeniable.
When you encounter Jesus and are truly freed, there is a transformation that others can see. You walk differently. You speak differently. You carry yourself differently. The peace of God—which surpasses all understanding—becomes visible in your life.
But here's the best part of the story—and maybe the most important:
As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. But Jesus said, "No, go home to your family and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been." So the man started off to visit the ten towns of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him. And everyone was amazed at what he told them. (Mark 5:18-20)
Jesus didn't keep this man. He sent him out as a storyteller of freedom.
The Bible tells us in Revelation that we overcome the schemes of the devil by the blood of Jesus and the word of our testimony. Your story matters. Your testimony is powerful.
If this man had stayed silent, how many people would never have encountered Jesus? How many would have remained bound? But because he told his story, entire towns heard about Jesus's power.
If you've found freedom, you must tell your story. And if you're still searching for freedom, know that your future testimony could set someone else free.
Now, some of you might be thinking, "But pastor, I've already encountered Jesus. I've had encounters with Him before, and I still feel bound." I want to give you something practical.
I've been learning from a mentor, Pastor Nathan Daniels, who teaches about "Freedom Through Forgiveness." Here's what I've discovered: Often, chains enter our lives through unforgiveness.
We don't realize why we're bound by anger, deception, victim mentality, addiction, or anxiety. Sometimes we can't even remember where the unforgiveness started. It happened when we were five years old, twelve years old, fifteen, twenty. Someone hurt us. Someone said something destructive. Someone did something to us that they should never have done.
And we've been carrying that unforgiveness for years.
Here's the key: You can forgive with your head but not your heart. If you look back on a memory and still feel pain in your body, that means there's still an infection. The Holy Spirit hasn't fully uprooted it yet.
The Bible tells us in Ephesians 4:26-27:
Do not let the sun go down on your anger. Do not let anger control you, because it will give a foothold to the devil.
I'm walking through this process right now. For the last six months, I've been in therapy and working with spiritual mentors to identify where my unforgiveness and anger are coming from. As a pastor, I don't have it all figured out. We're all in a process of sanctification—God purifying us to become more like Him.
Here's what you need to do:
Process the feeling. Don't suppress it. Feel the anger. Feel the hurt. Acknowledge it.
Allow the Holy Spirit to minister. Invite Him into that pain.
Forgive from your heart. Say, "God, I forgive that person." And mean it—not just with your head, but with your whole being.
Bless them and yourself. Pray, "Lord, I pray that you bless them. I pray that you bless me. And I'm going to walk in forgiveness today."
I can promise you, the moment you do this, you will feel something lift. You will feel a weight come off. You will feel a chain break.
Different chains may be attached to different people who hurt you. When you forgive that teacher who said you'd never be successful, anxiety might lift. When you forgive a parent, insecurity might lift. It's a process of allowing the Holy Spirit to search your heart and then obeying what He reveals.
Now, if you're in this room and you've never heard the gospel, let me tell you what it means. The gospel is the good news found in John 3:16:
For God so loved the world, he gave his only begotten Son. Whoever believes in him will not perish but will have everlasting life.
No matter how lost, how broken, how bound you are, God has never stopped keeping His eye on you. He's never stopped pursuing you. He's never stopped running after you.
All you have to do is repent—turn your eyes toward Jesus—and receive His love.
If you want to give your life to Jesus right now, I want to lead you in a prayer. After we pray, I'm going to ask you to raise your hand as a sign of faith. Make this decision with boldness—just like the man with the legion of demons ran to the feet of Jesus.
Repeat after me:
Jesus, come into my heart. Change my life. I repent, and I turn to you. I give you my life, Lord. I give you my heart. Make me free in Jesus' name.
If that's your prayer, raise your hand right now with boldness. Raise it high. God sees you in this moment.
And to those of you who already know the freedom of Jesus: I'm praying for a new courage, a new boldness, and a new conviction in your hearts. As you see people come forward for prayer today, I'm asking you to either stand in the gap for them or come share your testimony so that the enemy has no foothold on someone who's about to take a step that will transform their life.
Let me pray for all of us. Holy Spirit, search every heart here. Reveal unforgiveness. Reveal anger. Give people the clarity to know how and who to forgive. Flood this altar with people who are ready to encounter the freedom of Jesus. We need You. This is real. In Jesus' name, Amen.
