We all long for peace—in difficult circumstances, in grief, in everyday life, even in the nerves of a World Cup game. But when we think about peace, we often reduce it to a sense of calm, clarity, certainty, or control, or simply the absence of problems. Biblical peace is so much more than that.
Biblical peace is about the presence of God amidst what we're facing. It isn't the removal of our circumstances but God's presence with us in the middle of them.
"Don't worry about anything. Instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7)
Paul isn't saying "don't worry, everything will work out." He's calling us to bring everything to God in prayer, petition, and thanksgiving, through dependence on Him. The result isn't necessarily understanding—it's peace.
The word used for peace here is the Greek word Irene (similar to the Hebrew shalom), which speaks of wholeness and completeness—of every part of our life resting under God's rule. It's far bigger than a feeling of calm.
Paul promises a peace that surpasses understanding. Many of us want God to explain everything, but He gives us something greater than explanations—He gives us His presence.
The language in Philippians 4 is military: God's peace stands guard over our hearts and minds—our emotions, desires, affections, thoughts, and anxieties. It isn't understanding that guards us; it's the peace of God itself.
But peace doesn't just guard—it also guides. In Colossians 3, Paul writes:
"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts... and be thankful." (Colossians 3:15)
The word "rule" here carries the sense of an umpire—like those at Wimbledon, who not only watch over the game but decide the direction of each point, protecting the integrity of the game while guiding its outcome. In the same way, the peace of Christ doesn't just protect us from chaos—it directs our lives, shaping our decisions and responses.
We can let many things become the deciding voice in our lives: fear, anger, success, approval, other people's opinions, even our own emotions. But we are called to let the peace of Christ have the final say.
It's worth noting the order in Colossians 3. Paul first establishes our identity in Christ—raised with Him, hidden with Him—before giving instruction on Christian character. This is the heart of the gospel: unlike religions that say "do better to reach God," the gospel says because of Christ, we are brought near, and then we grow to become like Him.
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives." (John 14:27)
This peace was won through Christ's death and resurrection—it cost something. As Ephesians 2:13-14 reminds us, "he himself is our peace."
After speaking of peace, Paul moves to the Word: "Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you" (Colossians 3:16). Peace is sustained by truth—by the Word of God taking up permanent residence in our hearts, not just a quick read before church on Sunday.
We live in an age of unprecedented access to information—yet notice: the word "information" contains "in" but drops "formation." We can take truth in without ever letting it form us. The goal isn't simply to know more about Jesus intellectually, but to let His Word transform our thinking, desires, values, and character.
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
Paul then speaks of singing—psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, offered with gratitude. Worship is part of our formation too. But one of the great tragedies of current church culture is that we've turned worship into a matter of personal preference—engaging based on our own personality and taste, rather than God's.
Worship isn't about our preference; it's about God's. He has a mind, a will, an intellect, and emotions—we are made in His image, after all:
Just as I've learned to cook sweet potato the way my wife prefers—because I love her and care about her preferences—so we should want to worship God according to His preference, not our own comfort or taste. The real question after gathering isn't "Did I get what I wanted?" but "Was Jesus glorified?"
Paul closes this section with a sweeping statement:
"Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." (Colossians 3:17)
This isn't just about church gatherings—it's about family life, friendships, work, conversations, meals, meetings. Every ordinary moment can become an act of worship when Jesus is Lord of it.
We often measure the presence of God by our emotions: "I really felt God today" or "I didn't feel it this morning." But God's presence and work are not limited to what we can feel. Sometimes His deepest work happens quietly—in the whisper, not the wind.
A good measure of whether we're truly being changed by God's presence isn't a feeling but the fruit it produces:
"And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." (2 Corinthians 3:18)
Scripture is consistent: genuine encounters with God change people permanently.
We should come to church—and every day—with the expectation: "Holy Spirit, let me not leave the same way I came in." That's a better question than simply "Did I like the songs?" or "What will I get out of today?"
Jesus said, "If you love me, you will obey my commands" (John 14:15). Loving Jesus means being willing to be changed, challenged, and transformed by His presence—not just in church, but everywhere.
Brother Lawrence, a 17th-century monk, spoke of practicing the presence of God even while washing dishes. He wasn't suggesting we experience more of God in one place than another—but that God's presence can be practiced and known in every mundane moment of life.
God's presence is not confined to a building or a Sunday morning. The real question isn't "Is God present with me?"—He already is. The question is: "Am I attentive and surrendered to what God is doing here?"
